Temperature Check: 2009 Ultra High Reliefs (UHR)

philographerphilographer Posts: 1,324 ✭✭✭✭✭
These were red hot about six months ago and plenty of Buy Orders on the BST.

Not so many buy orders these days but the prices seem to be stable (and high) on eBay.

Recent successfully completed eBay transactions:

MS70 Proof Like PCGS: $6,447…$6,347…$6,448…$7,101…$6,500

MS70 Proof Like NGC: $5,750…$5,400…$5,600

MS70 PCGS: $3,800…$3,100…$3,800…$3,100…$3,100

MS70 NGC: $3,450…$3,450…$3,450…$3,751

What does the future hold?

I am still keenly buying these in all grades/services, particularly PCGS examples (you will note, many of the recent realizations for these you quote were sold by GreatCollections).

There is increased demand in PCGS MS-70 and PCGS MS-70 First Strike.

Many sales are going overseas, which will help the market in the U.S.

I am also paying MORE right now than (3) of those ebay prices listed above (easy to figure out which three) and the seller would not have to mess around with even less money after ebay and paypal fees are deducted!!

The UHR market is alive and well.

It might just be me, but I'm 100% satisfied with a PCGS MS69PL and no matter how hard I try, I personally can't see the difference between it and a 70PL so I would never pay 2x as much for one point. I bought it in Jan. 2012 for $3,300 shipped with the original mint packaging.

    I am HOLDIN'! I ain't FOLDIN'! Yet.

I do love to see these threads and the continued predictable rise in the UHR.

Keep up the magic, Mitch. You have been at the forefront of buying/promoting the UHR.

That is a mighty small pic of your sumptuous coin, Bully!

    Such a beautiful coin.
It would have to really go for crazy money before I sold mine.

FWIW: I too own one still sealed in its original outer shipping box and will NEVER sell it. Ever.

Why do you keep her sealed?
I opened the box right away, she was my first coin and she is stunning (the package makes its part!)

These prices were for plain vanilla--not early release or first strike. Some may have had gold foil labels or signed labels, etc. You can easily search completed listings at eBay...the search result will show 45 or 60 days of history...

  • On sale at Gainesvillecoins, $2800 raw and all OGP
  • Might send in my raw UHR to our host I think it has a shot at a 70, would it be smart to have them not grade it if it wont make a 70? You can do that right?

I purchased two, one I opened. It truely is a horrible looking coin. I know it's die polish lines but it's sure ugly inhand.
Wish I had returned it, scared to open the other one. Local dealers wanted no of part of it, tough to resell with that scratched/scuffedup look.
Really does look like someone hit it with a Brillo pad. Anyone score an ugly UHR from the Mint?

I had a thread about a year ago about a mint-sealed one I sent in to our host for grading. It came back genuine - cleaned! I had them do a review and they changed it to MS-65. It had some hairlines which were probably die polish lines. Some of these realy are horrible. I sold it on eBay to a well-informed buyer and bought one in MS-70. I've had my fill of "mint-sealed box" gambling.

At this point I see no premium for unopened boxes. Better to peek and see IMO. It's not like you're going to find an MS-71.

And how is this for a bit of PL relief?

Why would somebody buy something and never look at it?

How do you know it isn't a chocolate coin? Or the box is empty?

Many sales are going overseas, which will help the market in the U.S.

    Thanks Ian,

What regions/countries are these going to...Europe, Asia?

What's the split between US purchases vs. outside the US?
