Tons of nice coins in this thread! I started working on the Seated Liberty halves as a side when I couldn't find stuff for my Capped Bust half series. Alas, that side has turned into a full blown set in progress! Like others have said, these coins are very tough to find in decent, attractive condition. Last time I checked, I'm #8 in the basic Seated halves set registry. If you want to look at them, click on my registry link in my sig line and look for that series.

    1839-O H10C ND V-5?

Yes, the 1839-o half dime just above is V-5, MS-64.
It's easy to recognize Gerry Fortin's photo style and look it up on his sales archive.
    http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/SalesArchive.html
Plus I agree with his V-5 attribution - the obverse and reverse cracks are unique to V-5.

Just picked this one up at the post office this morning. Saw it at the NH coin and currency expo and knew I had to have it!
Had to sell some other coins and save for about a month to pay for it. But it is completely worth every penny.

    Drapery V-2

    It's a (very nice) V-4 (small o), actually. [very nice = MS-66+ ex-Gardner]
Since you wrote V-2, this suggests you are using Valentine's 1931 book, where he only listed 2 die marriages (and V-2 had the smaller mint mark of the 2).
It was also described as a V-2 medium O by Heritage in the Gardner sale, so the size difference is somewhat tricky.
Bill Harmon wrote an excellent article in 1993 where he described 8 die marriages.

    https://archive.org/details/gobrechtjournalfn056libe/page/2

Here's a comparison of the 1848-O mint mark sizes; photos from PCGS CoinFacts and Heritage Auctions.

I've seen 13 different V-4 coins in auction photos from the past 10 years, so I estimate it to be R-4 on the Sheldon scale.

Most of the high grade 1848-o coins are V-4, though, and they have a relatively high turnover, appearing 31 times at auction in the past 13 years.
Rarity was the one thing left out of Harmon's article, because at the time there were no large online photo archives to count.
    The full results are:

marriage rarity number of different coins in past 13 years
    V-1 R-5 7
    V-1A R-6 2
    V-2 R-4 18
    V-3 R-4 17
    V-4 R-4 13
    V-5 R-7 1
    V-6 R-4 17
    V-7 R-4 9
    V-8 R-5 7

    @yosclimber

Thank you for the corrected attribution and the additional information. Very informative and appreciated. Any Rarity differences for V-4, V-4A or V-4B? This example also exhibits die crack ES of States to O of OF.

  • yosclimberyosclimber Posts: 4,741 ✭✭✭✭✭

All 13 coins appear to be V-4A, including the crack ES to O which you described.
So I suppose the V-4 uncracked and the V-4B with cud above ME are R-7 or R-8.

1837 Small Date PCGS AU58 old blue holder

  • yosclimberyosclimber Posts: 4,741 ✭✭✭✭✭

Some nice half dimes. This thread has been running so long that I have saved photos of these beauties in the past and attributed them.
@rhedden's is 1837 V-5a (with rim cuds at 4k obscured by the holder and a die crack to the cap) and
@Gluggo's is 1845 V-5 (1845/1845 NW, crack from toe uphill, and die line in rock SW of shield; formerly owned by @oih82w8 ).

1853-O V-13u, crack on both sides of star 1.
Here's one I just got for Xmas from my son, via ebay. I finally have a good camera setup now, and I finished an 1853-O attribution guide earlier this month.
