Newbie Silver searcher on ebay

Hey everyone, I am slowly starting to get into silver(maybe a little late). Gonna start slow though so am not looking for big quantities, but hopefully this will lead to more in depth collecting. I am brand new and any tips on what to go for and what to stay away from or watch out would be very helpful. Since I am just beginning probably am more concerned with getting actual silver instead of paying a premium above what the silver is worth because of condition, rarity, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.... Just don't want to get ripped off. Thanks!

Get 90% junk silver then. You can have fun and try to build sets with them

    Welcome!!!

BTW - when buying from eBay, make sure to factor the shipping costs in as well. Usually, you can get 90% silver cheaping if you buy it local.

Welcome. If you are interested in silver check out the Precious Metals Forum here. Use the drop down menu at Navigation at the upper right of this page.

What he said. 90% is a good start and the best balance between silver content and value.
Worn coins are nice too, considering they could be over 100 years old.

After you get more confidence you can begin adding .999! Silver Eagle first I would suggest.

Yes, make sure you factor in shipping. Most bullion goes for more than you can get at ur local dealer or on the BST but sometimes you do get lucky. Like others said, go for 90% (Any dime, quarter or halve before 1964). You can go for junk, IE, worn pieces but if you can find some mint or proof sets for the same price, I'd go for those.

    Sound advice.

You could try something like I'm doing here, if so inclined. Of course I'm buying the key and semi-key coins, too, but you could opt for a "short set" of Walkers (or Mercury dimes, or whatever), starting with 1934-35 or so and collecting as many of the commons around melt value as you can.

  • Thanks for all your help! Have been factoring in shipping. I have never been to local dealer... Are the prices still quite a bit better after paying taxes on your purchase?
  • bestmrbestmr Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭
Hmmm, idk. I don't pay taxes on bullion and I have a state tax of almost 10%. Maybe I'm just lucky or it isn't taxed.

It shouldnt come as any suprise that I would recommend bank roll searching. Its a great way to fill the void when coin funds are low.
  • bestmrbestmr Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭
Yeah, most people buy a box of halves, $500, and search for silver that way. You might get lucky and find some 1965-1970 which is 40% or really lucky and find some 90%. But don't be bummed if you find nothing as it's happened to us all. I'd avoid searching quarters though as all the bajillion state ones bring your odds down some.

  • When searching half dollars, do you just bring the non silver ones back to the bank then?.... Do you have a way to put the coins back in rolls or do you just bring them back in bags?

Yup---a lot of fakes coming in especially from China.

Yes. The duds go right back to the bank. You'll need to put them in rolls and obviously the rolls will need to have the correct count. I doubt a bank would accept a bag. Get yourself some replacement paper wrappers in case any of the rolls you get are that tearaway, non-reusable kind.

Be smart and take them back to a different bank. Easier if you find one that uses a coin counter machine.
If you continually ask for half-dollars, and then take back a large number, you may find it much harder to get more as time goes on. Banks do this as a service for customers, they don't have to do this and, if you don't have a large account with them, they may figure it isn't worth it to do this for you.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Thanks for everyone's help... Feel a little intimidated going to a local dealer. How much should I expect to pay over silvers current price for junk silver or for American silver eagles at a dealer? I appreciate everyone's help, would like to find a good dealer as I think if you find one you can trust you can learn a lot from them and expand your knowledge on coins and metals.
    Thanks!

Buy your silver eagles by the roll of 20 from authorized US Mint Purchasers for the lowest spread over spot. Keep an eye out for sales, they do have them occasionally.
