Here's a Complete Set of Dahlonega Gold...

...struck in 1859!

I've often thought that a good way to collect a larger set was to complete smaller subsets within the larger collection. It gives a feeling of accomplishment, while making progress on a much larger goal.

Gorgeous - absolutely my favorite mint.

I love the clashed dies, and also the stem showing through the mintmark on the QE.

    Thanks very much for sharing.

Bah. Been there, seen one. At the museum in Dahlonega itself. image

Seriously, tho', for just 1859, I'd say you've got it sewn up pretty nicely. I like the orange-peel toning on the dollar, and the clean sharpness of the half-eagle.

Yes, it is often more satisfying to cut a large, difficult collection up into smaller, more “digestible” parts. I remember when I bought the Flying Eagle cent that completed my type set of cents from the 1793 Chain to the then-current Lincoln Memorial cent. It felt great! I still a long way to go to completion, but finishing that part was wonderful.

Nice collection! I really enjoy seeing attractive Dahlonega gold.

No to hijack this cool thread and nice coins by the OP, but here's some pics of sets D-Mint coins I took at the Dahlongea Gold Museum as LordM talked about a few posts up. OP please let me know if you want me to remove these.

Guitarwes- cool- I didn't take pix at the museum. Wasn't sure they'd let us. That brings back memories. It was a fun trip. We went up to Helen, too, which I liked. (Despite the Oktoberfest crowds.)

I dimly remember seeing the display at the Charlotte Mint Museum, too. And I've been to San Fran. Never to the Philly mint or Carson City or any of the others, though.

None of these are finest knowns (by technical grade), although I do have a few Dahlonegas that are in the Condition Census for their issue.

I'm not a Registry guy. I don't chase grading points, but am more interested in coins with a certain "look." I also like coins from famous collections, which more times than not are PQ for their grade level.

Thanks for all of the nice comments!

O agree completely, I started my Trade set as a CC coin only collection and after that was done branched out form there. It gave me many mile stones to feel the thrill of accomplishment.

  • I've seen the complete collection of Dahlonega gold coins on display at the Dahlonega Gold Museum many times. The set is on loan from North Georgia College & State University, whose Administration Building (Price Memorial Hall) is built on the original granite foundation of the Dahlonega Mint. The collection was on display for many years in Price Memorial Hall and was loaned to the Gold Museum when PMH was being renovated in 1997. Yours Truly was fortunate enough to be invited to take a tour of PMH during the construction work and I took pictures of the original basement walls of the mint (which had been covered up with dry wall for many, many years).

It is also interesting that this isn't the first set of Dahlonega gold coins that the college has owned. The first set was stolen from the college library, where it was then on display, in the early 1960s. Stack's was responsible for assembling a replacement set for the college, which was completed in the early 1970s.

There is also a full set of Dahlonega gold coins on display at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, a destination that is well worth visiting.

The gold dollar is the consensus favorite among those posters expressing a preference. It is graded XF45+, the lowest technical grade of the three 1859-Ds. This is further evidence, IMO, that one shouldn't be a slave to the technical grade and should hold out for the coin with the right "look."

One other observation that I'll make, which relates to another recent thread that asked if you would buy a non-PCGS coin that you really liked. It dawned on me that none of these 1859-Ds were certified by PCGS when I bought them. The gold dollar was in a blue label ANACS holder, graded XF45. The quarter eagle was in an NGC AU55 holder, which crossed at the same grade, with the provenance added. I bought the half eagle from the Bass II auction, as an uncertified AU50, and had sent it to PCGS right away.
