Here's a Complete Set of Dahlonega Gold...

...struck in 1859!
I've often thought that a good way to collect a larger set was to complete smaller subsets within the larger collection. It gives a feeling of accomplishment, while making progress on a much larger goal.

Gorgeous - absolutely my favorite mint.
I love the clashed dies, and also the stem showing through the mintmark on the QE.
Thanks very much for sharing.
Now I have to go and get something to clean up the drool from my monitor.

Bah. Been there, seen one. At the museum in Dahlonega itself.
Seriously, tho', for just 1859, I'd say you've got it sewn up pretty nicely. I like the orange-peel toning on the dollar, and the clean sharpness of the half-eagle.

Nice collection! I really enjoy seeing attractive Dahlonega gold.

No to hijack this cool thread and nice coins by the OP, but here's some pics of sets D-Mint coins I took at the Dahlongea Gold Museum as LordM talked about a few posts up. OP please let me know if you want me to remove these.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
Lance.
I dimly remember seeing the display at the Charlotte Mint Museum, too. And I've been to San Fran. Never to the Philly mint or Carson City or any of the others, though.
<< <i>Finest Knowns? >>
None of these are finest knowns (by technical grade), although I do have a few Dahlonegas that are in the Condition Census for their issue.
I'm not a Registry guy. I don't chase grading points, but am more interested in coins with a certain "look." I also like coins from famous collections, which more times than not are PQ for their grade level.
Thanks for all of the nice comments!

O agree completely, I started my Trade set as a CC coin only collection and after that was done branched out form there. It gave me many mile stones to feel the thrill of accomplishment.
<< <i>WOW, Awesome !!! >>
<< <i>Very nice - would love to see them in hand.
no kidding about that, that makes two of us
It is also interesting that this isn't the first set of Dahlonega gold coins that the college has owned. The first set was stolen from the college library, where it was then on display, in the early 1960s. Stack's was responsible for assembling a replacement set for the college, which was completed in the early 1970s.
There is also a full set of Dahlonega gold coins on display at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, a destination that is well worth visiting.
<< <i>all are nice, but I like the dollar best...by far! >>
The gold dollar is the consensus favorite among those posters expressing a preference. It is graded XF45+, the lowest technical grade of the three 1859-Ds. This is further evidence, IMO, that one shouldn't be a slave to the technical grade and should hold out for the coin with the right "look."
One other observation that I'll make, which relates to another recent thread that asked if you would buy a non-PCGS coin that you really liked. It dawned on me that none of these 1859-Ds were certified by PCGS when I bought them. The gold dollar was in a blue label ANACS holder, graded XF45. The quarter eagle was in an NGC AU55 holder, which crossed at the same grade, with the provenance added. I bought the half eagle from the Bass II auction, as an uncertified AU50, and had sent it to PCGS right away.

I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
