For about 10 years, I was part of an online forum/group called the VHML....Van Halen Mailing List. We were a group who had a forum and it acted much as it does here, but was obviously centered around Van Halen, the music, trading music, etc;
An annual convention was planned and executed in my early days there. If I remember right, it was "officially" only Saturday and Sunday, but most people arrived on Friday and left Sunday night or Monday. Lots of folks brought memorabilia and parts of their collections for display.
I think a 5 day convention is a pretty aggressive plan. If some days are filled with speakers, autograph guests, etc; it could easily fill up several days. Maybe start with a few days and if the first one goes well, then extend next years event to more days. I think what you wouldn't want is for everyone to have blown their funds and expended all the excitement by day 3 and then skip out after that.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw a few thoughts out there.
I like the idea of having it in Vegas, it is pretty cheap to get there - regardless of where you are travelling from.
I would love to see us be able to get PSA there along with some of the card companies in particular. How about PSA uber grading special for cards dropped off at the "meetings"
Maybe card companies would put together some gift packs as well for attendees, much like they have done in the past for the Hawaii Trade conference?
Just my thoughts
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
I'm all about my family, but I like Many of you need a break sometimes.
Cpamike said Thursday to Sunday. I like that time frame.
I think Vegas works for the well roundedness of things to do, plus getting some Athletes potentially might make it easier.
If people want to come earlier or stay later that could be their choice.
Thursday: Arrival day... Drinks 5-7, 7/8 dinner Friday: Events planned from like 10 to 6, maybe a couple speakers, companies, autograph session, pack ripping Saturday: Morning CU golf outing, group themed dinner that night with guest speaker Sunday: Departure, and can have other things for those wanting to stay a day or two longer.
I bet we can get cheap airfare, maybe free hotels. Tell them we have some Registry chasers, set builders, pack hoarders, and Muggyman, they should hook us up.
Been my experiences at casino's they will comp your hotel if you have a good size party coming. Standard rooms.
I'll start workIng on this with Dave, and anyone else that wants to help.

Sounds like a good start Mike. I agree that I love my family and all, but this should be about getting together with our fellow board members. Las Vegas is a good spot IMO as there is stuff to do there besides gambling.
As far as the timing of this convention, are you thinking October - November?

FYI.......October/November are convention busy times in Vegas. Definitely want to stay away from the last week in October first week in November due to the SEMA/APAA auto show since there are no deals at that time and the town is booked.
Throw a vote in for the National for me. I've never been to one and there's no way I could afford a second trip this year. I've already paid for my flight and hotel, so either way I'm gonna be there that weekend.
Even if you all decide to do it someplace else, I really hope to get a chance to meet a few of you while I'm in Baltimore.

Mike, I like your itinerary schedule but how bout we think about knocking off one, no make that 3 casinos on Saturday night?
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo. ~WalterSobchak
You can play golf here and the caddies are hot college girls. I was looking into this for a trip with my dad and brother. >>
C'mon, those girls are just going to make fun of us when we tell them we can't play another round with them because we've got to go look at our baseball cards.
I hear everyone, I do. I don't care what relationship your in, everyone deserves a trip a year. I am going to bring my kids to the National this year.
Next year's Convention will great.
I'm talking the Collector's R&R. We make the convention the way we want. No kids, no spouses, just guys, well I think everyone is here, and their love of sports, and cardboard. Nobody to report to, no hurry up, no are you almost done, our time, endless fun.
This isn't about drugs/strippers, etc.
I'm talking poolside talking about Jeter and how many hits he'll finish with, closing down a local sportsbar loading up on wings and beer. Maybe listening to some inspiring athletes past or presently playing. Having a live group rip, catch a game, a show, whatever.
I know not everyone can go, but I'm going to put something together in Vegas. Heck you could bet on ball games. I'm thinking something different than the usual.
Someday maybe PSA will sponsor them, and based on registry or number of submissions they may provide it.
I'll put something rocking together. I built plenty of these at placesike the Broadmoor, Arizona, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Scottsdale, etc.
<< <i>my wife would have my head if i went to vegas and left her alone with the 5 kids. >>
So maybe this guy's "babysitter" can assist.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
I might be in for this depending on when it is scheduled. Sounds fun. I despise flying, but it's too far a drive for me to not fly. If I die flying, I'm going to hate y'all though, LOL.
I've got to tell you guys a story. A co-worker once got me to play in an online strat-o-matic baseball league that he had been in for years. Talking to the other guys through the league message board and email seemed normal enough. Everyone has obviously hardcore baseball fans, so when they mentioned a get together in Cleveland, and going to an Indians game, I thought it was a good excuse for a day out of the house.
We must have been the last one to get to the house, as the owners and their wives/girlfriends were out back on the patio and in/around the pool. The next little while would have been perfect had the music "bah-chicka-wah-wah" been playing, as I felt like I was getting ready to be in an adult film. One guys wife was all over me, and it was extremely uncomfortable.
The league "president" had a briefcase full of league materials that he didn't let out of his sight. There might have been some blow next to the reprint set of the SOM 1973 Baltimore Orioles cards, I don't know.
We went the Indians game, and did NOT go back to the house.
I always said that I didn't want to meet anymore of my internet friends in person again as I liked them better online. Not that this would happen with you guys, but talk of a get together, made me think of this after not thinking about it in years.
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.
The National is back in Chicago for the summer of 2013. After we do the Vegas thing this year we could do chi-town. Maybe go to a game a Wrigley field too. BBCE has its headquarters in the area and we could arrange a serious group rip and have Steve there with us while we rip. He could do a guest speaker thing and really get stuff going. Lots of stuff to do in Chicago.
I'm going to the National this year. That's all about the show and the auto's.
This Convention is going to be all about us. Those who go to the shows, wait in crazy lines, spend silly money on pieces of cardboard, stay up late searching EBay, spend hours listing cards only to have them deleted, get shilled on winning a card, get looked at funny when you say I collect cards, go on tilt when an Alt appears in a thread.
This going to be fun, R/R, relax, stress free living. If you can make it, great, if not make next time.
I'm getting to work on it....
Vegas is the spot. What happens there stays there.... Maybe We can get Tyson to come hang...
