Sports Card Forum's Convention 2012... Post your ideas, or if you would be interested, see sample it

I've thought about this for a solid year or more. I think we should put together a PSA Board Convention. I think last year I told a few some of my ideas.

Vegas would be the best place, since there is nothing to really do, which will keep us all from getting into trouble. All kidding aside...

What does everyone think. Maybe we can get a sponsor or two, a day of ripping wax boxes, packs, I don't know I think it would be really good for an annual Convention made up of people just from this forum.

PSA could have a presentation/half day about the future, their vision, the hobby, etc.

And of course some free time with card buddies pool side, by the table or machines, shows, whatever.

Post your ideas, we could get group rates, discounted airfare, etc.

Edit: So many on here have never met, some make to the National, some don't. But that is all about cards. I am pretty sure there is more to all of us than cards. So why not have our own Convention. It could change locations each year. Maybe 4 or 5 days. We could grow it to something big. Maybe Joe and PSA would help pony a little bit of a sponsorship, Topps, Upper Deck, Who knows.

I know from working in marketing if you get a decent size group together companies will pay to speak in front of them. I'm just saying, and maybe this isn't something that happens to the fall time. Best thing we should do is get a list of serious people that can and would want to go. Obviously with notice. Post your ideas, what you would like to see have happen, concerns, likes, dislikes. I really think we could put this together, and I bet we could easily get 50 plus people to go.

We also know we already have an in with Dale Murphy and Jose Canseco, we could get some more to show up for Auto's as well. Not a sporstcard show, a party for us, the collector's.....

With enough notice I bet we could get Steve to come for a day or two. Bring some Wax for us to rip, this could be a blast!!!!

I want to keep a running tally of who would be seriously interested... WE/I can make this happen.

Here is a sample itinerary....

Day 1: Arrival Day. Check in. Drinks from 5 to 7/meet and great, sit down dinner from 7 till 9,Discussion of days ahead/events, free time to have fun.

Day 2: Breakfast at leisure, Morning session at 9am. Maybe guest speaker, PSA, Joe Orlando, Steve BBCE, Topps, Upper Deck, Athletes, etc. Breakout lunches where pack ripping will commence. Afternoon from say 1 till 7 at leisure. 7pm have a formal dinner, maybe get a really great guest Athlete to speak, etc. Free time after or show to attend as a group.

Day 3: Morning breakout sessions to discuss hobby, collecting objectives, set building, selling on Ebay, etc. Group lunch with pack ripping. Afternoon with Athlete speaking, Autograph sessions, discussions, done by 4pm. Rest of the night free time.

Day 4: Nothing till Lunch since night before will be late. Group lunch with pack ripping, followed by more Athletes, companies, etc, Group special dinner, fun themed dress required, hawaiian shirts or something. Free time after/show.

Day 5: Departure day. Those wanting to come earlier or stay later can on their own time.

I could put together a really Awesome deal for us, will need some help, and maybe a small board of 4 or 5 people to help organize this all, but we could make this really, really great! I dream big, always have, always will.

Sounds like it would be a fun idea Mike. It's always good to meet fellow collectors. I think you could get a decent amount of people from the boards to attend. Let's see what kind of ideas others have to add to the fun.

  • I know I have not posted much in the past (mainly because of my lack of knowledge of vintage sports cards), but I am always in for a Vegas trip and a chance to meet some forum members. Anytime is good for me and I do not need much notice. I would probably be staying at my regular hotel, the Flamingo.... not the best hotel, but always the best time for me. I am already booked for September 29th to August 5th and am looking for an excuse to go sooner.

    5 days in Vegas. Yikes

I have been to Las Vegas hundreds of times, I even used to own a business there. 5 days there for someone that is not used to it is very dangerous. I know most of us are big boys but be careful.
I would love to be around for some of the fun, it will be interesting to see what you come up with.

  • Again just an idea. I think the concept works.

    Vegas has it all....

Maybe it's a bad idea, but only big boys maybe should go.

It can be anywhere, just needs to be a locations that is well rounded with things to do. Catching a ball game would certainly be great too.

We need to see if we can get enough together. The larger the group the more we can get as far as sponsorships, freebies, giveaways, discounts, etc. I just know Vegas is a meca and it's pretty cheap to get there and stay there. It's definately not a great place for those who don't have self control.

This is the brain storming thread, but I think making this happen this year will be well worth it....

Just for starters ... Greg Maddux lives in Vegas ... Randall Cunningham is a Pastor at a church in Vegas ... Basketball player Larry Johnson owns a beverage company in Vegas. I am sure there are a LOT more sports personalities that live there that we could try to get to talk.

    Plus 1, that's what I'm talking about.

Yes Vegas is the Casino Captial of the US,

    But,

    Golf
    Shows
    Attractions
    Pawn Stars(lol)
    Nice hotels
    Bars
    Restaurants
    Clubs
    Sites to see
    Hoover Dam isn't far
    Adult entertainment

Plus we are all about the cardboard. We deserve it. Plus making it a convention it allows those that need to, to get permission.

    Keep the ideas coming!

  • Sounds like a great idea Mike - I would definitely be interested. Ive never been there - but it would have to take a lot of planning and saving up on my part.

Jose Canseco also lives in Vegas so that makes it even easier to get him.

Id say a 3 day thing - Friday from about 5-10 (meet and greet with fellow board members)

    Saturday from 10-6

    Sunday from 11-7

Maybe we can get the likes of Canseco up for a Q&A/signing/meet and greet - or even maybe a softball tournament which he could possibly participate in. He still loves playing.

Also we can sell and trade to each other - Kind of like our own sports card show. And as you mentioned, we can try and get PSA or/and Beckett out there along with JSA.

Nice concept, but not in the cards for me to attend this year. The one idea I would recommend would be to have an autograph session with some of the speakers / players.

Great idea! You might consider doing it in line with a major sporting event, say the World Series or NBA Playoffs. I think getting someone to sponsor a sportsbar for a few hours closed to attendees would be possible and it would give everyone a reason to be in the same spot other than your breakout sessions.

  • It doesn't have to be Vegas boys.

    This is brainstorming.

It has to be somewhere warm.

We could have a golf day too.

I am very close, personally and professionally, with the owner of Topps. If this really coalesces I can reach out no problem. He knows I love cards and I'm sure will help us make it cool.

Incidentally some of my buddies from growing up own several of the best clubs there (Vegas), so I can help with that as well.

We might get a better turnout if we were to schedule it during the same time/place as The National. Just a thought.

Whoops, I meant July 31st. I am going to Caesars in Windsor February 29th and confused my dates for some reason.

Five days in Vegas is no big deal for me as I have been going for 7-8 days at a time at least once a year for the last five years or so. We always plan a guys week in vegas and some schedules conflict and guys come and go all week. I grab my own room and we take in a baseball game or two as our AAA minor league team is based there (Las Vegas 51's - Toronto Blue Jays). I do usually spend one day recuperating in my room at some point during the trip.

Another idea (maybe next year) would be to hold it in NYC at the NFL draft.

Also, another thing to do is have a fanatasy football draft during the convention. Obvioulsly you couldn't have a 50 man league but we could have several leagues of 8-12 people. Though it would have to be in the June-August timeframe.

  • To meet at the Nationals would be pretty cool too.

    Baltimore this year.

  • I would like this to be about us, not so much about a card show or convention. A R and R trip, around cards, fun, Athletes, Auto's, events, etc. Guest speakers, etc, etc. Let's not wait till 2013. Fall 2012.

Just need a list of potential. The power is in numbers. We get a 100 people able to go, we can get all kinds of perks, maybe perk dogs too!

I live in Murray, Kentucky, a western Kentucky town of about 18,000 plus Murray State University. For the last two or three years, we have assembled a group of 15 or so collectors of primarily vintage memorabilia (turn of the century bats, gloves, cards, trophies, paper, etc.) for a one-day "show and tell." Collectors come have from Nashville, Louisville, and one or two other places.

Our core is 5-7 local collectors, mainly 60+ years in age. We have a meal, fellowship, and a tour of local collectors homes where very nice vintage items are displayed. Those who have come from afar are always glad they made the trip.

One of our group makes vintage turn-of-the-century baseball bats and restores viontage bats for collectors/dealers across the country. We attend the National every year. One collector has a museum-type basement with several display cases and even mannequinns with original uniforms.

I doubt we would be in for Vegas, but keep us in mind for whatever you do.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

If you are serious about making it over 5 days maybe you should consider the idea of a family friendly area that would appeal to making it more of a vacation combo.
The Vegas idea is great for me, but it might keep many others away.

Alternate ideas that seem good would be the national because some already are going.
What about we try some regional get togethers first to try and build the idea.

I love LA - of course I live in Southern California. We could actually set up a visit to PSA and get Joe Orlando maybe to host a get together. Maybe we could even get a special
submission deal for the day, similar to the open Fridays they used to have except this be just an open CU board submission day.
Possible visit to Memory Lane - I know they have offered visits to people before.
Maybe a visit to Gary Cypres Museum.
    Southern Calif has Disneyland/Universal City/Knotts Berry Farm/Beaches

I talked to Santa Anita racetrack about a "day at the races" and got some cool response. For $29/person they offer up admission/parking/program/food
and tables set up for an infield gathering on a race day.image

  • Morning,

I really like the idea of Vegas and to be honest with you don't think it works at least for me at the National. I travel across the country for the National and I am pretty busy most of the 3-4 days I am there. I also think that 5 days is a bit much, 4 days 3 nights would be more in line. Also to whover suggested the Family thing, not for me, I don't subject my Family (Except my one Son), to my Card stuff, they already have to put up with my 10-20 hour a week on the Computor dealing with my E-Bay stuff!

Just my 2cents, I would definitely have an interest in Vegas!!
