Stone: I think 63 Fleers look especially nice when centered, and those are beautiful, centered examples you've shown. On that design, I like how the white border evenly follows the outline of the yellow diamond. I'm thinking that this aspect of the card design, makes it especially important for eye appeal to have the rest of the card centered. On another note, that Ryan mini sure jumped out at me. Very nice!

ToneD: I love those T206s. In addition to the Cobb, which is just plain outstanding, Brown really stood out for me as having very nice eye appeal despite the corner wear.

This is a great thread. Thanks everyone for sharing!

This thread is killer! I am loving the fact that people are showing off their cards. I love seeing the stuff that everyone else has. Matty, the Brett PSA 10 mini is just insane! Love the colors on that card. Keep them coming.....I might need to put a thread together and post some cards as well.

My main collecting focus at the moment is a 75 mini registry set on which I'm about 75 percent complete. I'm also in the process of putting together a raw, mint, centered 78 T baseball set one card at a time by hand at card shows and shops. When I get bored with those two sets, I like to pick up decently centered (not always perfectly centered, though) vintage misfits, as I term them. These are cards that strike me as having nice eye appeal but have wrinkles, mild corner wear, etc. I get much satisfaction in finding these types of cards and paying a song for them. Here are some of them.

I love the 57's, and will pick them up on a whim when I find one I like. I've always thought this Valo card was cool with the old tv camera in the background:

    My favorite Banks issue:

This one could have been a 9 but for a wrinkle:

I love the clear photo of this Maz:

Here's a few others that I stumbled on, thought they looked great for the issue, and bought cheaply:

So many of these cards show that a centered example presents so well, in a wide range of grades. One can save thousands off their initially conceived budget by dropping down a grade and going for great centering.

Precisely. The 7's in my mini set are low pop and too expensive for my taste in 8 or above. A few are placeholders, but many I purchased because they are centered and look just fine in my set IMO. In terms of set GPA, they are easily balanced out with high pop/inexpensive 9's.

This is a set - if one is a centering freak that can some time to complete - I've been working on it since 2004!

A few centered 63's, maybe the most sensitive year for centering -

Sidepocket, sweet '63's. No doubt very difficult to find centered like those.

Even 3's can have great eye appeal when centered.

    Another one of my favorites

Thanks CW. Right back at ya for those you put up. The eye appeal of the Mantle is off the charts. Exactly what I would want when I finally get around to look for one. Congrats. image

  • I'm not too particular on centering.

I like a good clean cut card within the measurment limits.

And I mostly like the rough cuts.

But I appreciate a collectors opinion. And I appreciate a collectors choice of his collection.

    Thanks for sharing MattyC.

Mike, you keep hittin them out of the park!!! That Kaline is so sweet. That's gotta be worthy of an 8.5, no?

This has always been one of my favorite cards of my collection. Very tough to find this one decently centered and this one is almost perfect. I contemplated sending it in for a 1/2 point bump but I think the corners have a little too much wear to get an 8.5.

beauty of a Brock.....here's one of my '69 faves, about as strong an 8 as you'll see.....maybe try this one for a bump someday, eh? image

  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,126 ✭✭✭✭✭
Very nice Seaver. They're very hard to find without a significant tilt. I've only seen a few examples over the years that had no discernable tilt. One I owned as a PSA 8 but it unfortunately had scribble indentations on the surface that PSA missed when they graded it. So I sold it back to them for grading credits.
  • Thanks for sharing Matty, not just the pic's but your awesome knowledge.

Centering's key for me too, here's some of my faves from my collection:

Both bought raw, both initially slabbed as 8's, both bumped to 8.5s on review:

Thanks. That card has been a white whale of sorts for me, in that every single 9 I find has tilt or looks OC. This one was jumped on.

Then there's this one. The centering...it leaves me speechless...

Needless to say, wound up spending a little more than I was prepared to-- but this is one card where there are so many 9s out there, and I wanted a special one. Arguably the most dominant everyday player in a major sport ever-- Finals MVP in every one he appeared in, global brand, people still stampeding each other to get his shoes today, still relevant, brought huge fame to his sport in a way akin to Babe Ruth, and considered his true RC. Had to have one of these in the collection.

My one BGS slab, but I believe they do a great job with this card; their system helps quantify/separate the elite cards, the way many of us do with our eyes when we compare two PSA slabs in the same grade
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
And freshly reholdered and driven back from PSA. Prior holders were crazy old.

Fantastic pick ups Matty! The Jordan is off the charts! The Schmidt rookie is probably my favorite card from the 70s.

I never get tired of looking at those 2 Mantles either. Nice to see them in fresh holders.
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
Thanks. I had only seen a BGS 10 centering once before.

Definitely felt good to get fresh holders on the Micks. They turned it around so fast and it's always a pleasant drive down there during off-hours w/no traffic.
