Cards Of A Centering Addict - Ruth, Ryan RC, and Gibson RC Just Added

So I'm a big stickler for centering; I feel it's the foremost factor in determining eye appeal. I love to own 9s that can hold their own against 10s. I think there's real value there. Anyways I've been moving away from the 1975 Mini Set I was building for years and am now really into star cards, especially RCs. I've long wanted a Henderson, but always have an issue with tilt and centering on this card. I've pulled several from BBC packs, all OC. So when I saw the one pictured below, I knew right then I had to have it.

Then there's the Rose. I saw that the centered 8s were commanding strong premiums, and did not want to go over 2K for the card, as there are a couple on my want list that will be costing me a bundle. So the goal became the best centered 7 possible. I saw this one pop online and the auction photo was not the best, in the sense that the card was pushed a little to the left, and it appeared that the centering was less than perfect. Yet I examined the photo closely, and saw a sliver of the left border was kind of hiding behind the left inner ridge of the holder, so I was willing to bet that in hand it was money. It comes today and measures sick all around for centering. Very pumped.

AWESOME pickups Matty. I too appreciate very well centered cards.

That is one beautiful Rose. That centering is dead on. Nice pick-up.

Thanks. This is another card that suffers from notorious serious centering issues. Love the blue background on this one.

Beautiful cards, your Rose 7 is much better than mine in the same grade because of the centering. Congrats

    Here's a couple more.

The Palmer is definitely a review candidate one of these days. The card is sitting a little to the side in the scan but the centering is strong.

The 74 Schmidt is one of my favorite cards; I am hard pressed to think of a star card that has as many overgraded nines. There seems to always be something wrong with this card, especially tilt and centering. This one is as good as I was able to track down through years of hunting.

Nice Rose...maybe Matt will post his 7.
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
Minis tend to suffer from crazy bad centering. Especially when the eye focuses on the side borders, where the two colors meet, it can really throw off the eye appeal. So finding these star minis with good centering was tough.

The Ryan was pulled by a fellow board member who did me a major solid by offering it to me.

In the scan the Ryan is sitting a little high on the lower right side, hence why the centering may look a tad off. Funny how a thing like that can alter the sales price, and then you get it in hand and tap the holder and you see how it really looks. Just what happened with the Rose above.

    Great cards..

These I posted before, but since they're part of the centering discussion...

Centering was going to be key for the 52 Mantle. I was after a four or five but felt this particular 3 was such a great buy, and presented better than many 4s and all 3s I had considered.

The 52 Bowman was a card I had a grand budget on, so I knew it was going to be a six. Camped out for a year to find a nice centered one.

The 56 being such a seminal card had to be the best centered 8 I could track down.

Some centered Bretts. The 76 of course is so tough with any degree of decent centering. 78 pretty hard also.

OK Matty - you're an adict! So am I - so you're in good company - a superb group of cards.

I don't have some of those cards as nice as yours - I'm chartreuse with envy - very nice - and thanx for showing.

I suppose this is for the SF/Oakland fan of centered cards...

The 86 Young took a while to find.

The Joe is sitting a little to the side but his centering is money.

I'm a huge Donny Fan. Had to stop myself from attempting to hoard this card. Even have it atop an 84 Donruss Rack thanks to MuggyMan.

Kind of like in that movie CONSPIRACY THEORY where Mel Gibson had to buy every copy of Catcher In The Rye that he came across.

This was the first card I bought once I caught the centering bug. I had pulled two that graded 9 from packs, but both had slight centering issues that bugged me. I sold them off and put them toward this one.

    Hey Matty,

Beautiful cards! I'm sad to see you're moving away from the mini's!

I used to not care much about centering until I started collecting the mini's. After weeding through so many off-centered, tilted cards, I really started to appreciate nice centering when I found it. Case in point is this 75 Mini Garvey. It's always centered low and to the left or right, so when this one popped up on the 'Bay for a very reasonable BIN price, I nailed it without hesitation. It's one of my favorites in my collection:

I was always a fan of the 79 Molitor. Thought it was a way undervalued card. It doesn't come up for sale that often. Has crazy centering problems. And is the first full solo card of a great player.

Indy that 8 can hang with a 9 on any day. That is a great pickup. All about buying the card.

Come on Matty - you're killing me!

Those are incredible - don't even know where to start - I think I told you last time that the Brett was stunning - well it looks better tonite!!!!!!

    A real show stopper.

My cards just called and told me they're not coming out to play anymore!

Thanks, Stone. They spend too much time locked away unseen so they had to step out a little.

Wow. Those two vintage beauties are DEAD ON CENTERED. Awesome. Truly standouts for the grade.

  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
And of course centering matters on packs as well. While these are not perfect 50/50, poor centering would just ruin these. The card gods smiled when they made sure the top card on these packs was centered enough to maintain great eye appeal. I posted these on the pack thread and whale thread.

I love that Murray/Molitor cello. Wow! That was the first year I bought packs. I used to dig through cellos and rack packs looking for Cubs players at the time like Steve Ontiveras, Rudy Meoli, Jerry Morales, etc. I hate to think how many Murray or Molitor cellos I pushed aside in pursuit of cubbies.

I was always a fan of the 79 Molitor. Thought it was a way undervalued card. It doesn't come up for sale that often. Has crazy centering problems. And is the first full solo card of a great player.

I agree with you 100 percent. The 79 Molitor is killer with centering and print issues as well.
  • Great stuff Matt.

I too am big into centering. I have incomplete sets, (that may never be completed) because I only buy cards that are 50/50 with
no tilt. I love the search.
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
Loved Doc growing up. His curve was sick. I remember looking at the CCP guide and the 85 Topps Gooden had the fat black diamond symbol beside it for two years, which meant it was a hot card. When I searched for one, it had to have THE BEST centering possible, and the winner was in a BGS holder.

The Gehrig isn't centered all that well but I had room on the scanner.

    Pmcollectour,

Such sets would command huge premiums when complete, and to a discriminating collector. Are they on the Registry?

    Centered cards are the sh*t.
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
This was so iconic growing up. I hoarded this card also for a while. I have 8 now. And another 50 raw. This may be a sickness.

  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
With the Reggie, the big issue for me was always top/bottom tilt. If the image was framed crooked I just couldn't get into the card. So I was happy when I found this one.

The Carter Rated Rookie is also often found very OC.

The Rose is the best centered star card I pulled from a pack and self-subbed. It compares favorably to every mini ten I ever owned. No love from the grader.

MattyC you are speaking my language brother!!! I too am a centering addict. You have an amazing collection and I can appreciate those beauties. I mainly collect lower grade pre-war so for me centering is of the utmost importance since I know the corners will not be so sharp. Keep em coming.

  • << <i>Pmcollectour,

They are not registered. I'm not a big registry guy. I once thought about it, but thought it may lead me towards unecessary
purchases. I'll stick with 1/2 sets and 1/3 sets of centered cards in PSA 9, then a full set in PSA 9 that has major tilts and 60/40 centering.
  • That Rose mini and Carew would not be purchased by me, unless I really loved the card, and could never find a centered example.
The Rose is too off top to bottom, and the Carew side to side.
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
Yes the Carew is the worst centered card in the stack.

The Rose has a special place due to me pulling it personally. Yet that scan I just took is a good discussion point. If you look closely, you can see a tiny sliver of the lower border is sitting below the inner holder ridge. If I correct this and rescan, its perfect centering is better seen. Kind of like what happened with the Rose RC. Those inner ridges can mask centering, depending on the position of the card in the scan.

And I agree it really is amazing how the Registry can start out as an organizing tool, and then get one to make purchases they don't really want to make. I speak from experience there.

Now Shagrotn77, let's pause and admire that Reggie!

Man, that is the best I've seen in an 8. You selling it?! Awesome card. What a great buy over the other 8s or a poorly centered 9, in my opinion. That is my dream Reggie. Gotta look for that card's twin to upgrade mine.

    Tone D,

I am just getting a little into Pre-War myself. Those T206's especially are so gorgeous when centered. If you have any scanned definitely throw'em up. Thx.

Awesome thread, Matty, thanks for sharing the scans. As another centering addict,
I can appreciate your efforts! image

The Rose RC that started off the thread is amazing. So tough to find that one
    perfectly centered.

It's funny how when I collected as a kid, centering didn't even cross my mind.
I look back through all my old binders of cards from '77 through '83, my childhood
collecting years, and my cherry-picked cards are full of OC examples.

    Hi Andrew

Those are just sweet! Especially the West - as most know - that's one of the toughest sets to find well centered cards and yours is off the chart - beautiful color also!

And my Reggie looks nothing like that - another hard to find card in that condition.

That Musial is great. Just a great buy with that premium centering. I'm looking for the older, super-expensive cards in just that type of condition.

The Reggie and Seaver and Clemente, too. Would rather have those than a grade higher and OC. Thanks for posting!

The West is excellent! That set is impossible. Believe it or not, the West is one of the easier cards to find centered. Try to find Al Attles (card #1) or Bob Leonard centered. I've never even seen a really nice Bob Leonard for sale.
