1984 was a great year for CC Morgans! image

Are those obverse cheeck scuffs on the coin? If so, I cannot agree with 65+.

I can not tell if it on the coin or on the plastic.

I appreciate that the scratches are on top of plastic.

I've seen plastics in much better shape than this one But the main thing is the coin!

I think those marks on the cheek are planchet marks from when it was rolled. These are seen from time to time on Morgans. My understanding is that they are taken into account in the eye appeal category, but not in the straight grading category, when assigning a grade.

Edit to clarify what I mean: I don't believe the planchet marks will count against the grade, since they were present when the coin left the mint, although I could be wrong.

Trying to learn about Morgan grading. Shouldn't those three shots to the eagle's breast keep this coin from MS65+?

    Nice coin!

    I don't want to be critical, but from the pics, it's a 50/50 ms65 and NO WAY it's a +. (sorry)

Looks like Mint Made roller marks on the cheek. I think the coin is nice.

    Roller Marks

That's what you have on your 84CC. Also, they often appear to have a 'chalky' look to them.

Those cheek marks would drive me nuts. With so many 84-CCs out there, you should hold out for a cleaner looking example.

Most of these that turn up on HA have the same roller marks. They aren't uncommon for 65's and even 66's. JMHo

It is my understanding that planchet issues or roller marks, unless severe, are not considered in the grading room. Other than this matter, the cheek is unusually clean for a Carson City Morgan $.

I don't have a problem with an MS 65 grade assigned to the coin. That said, I don't think the coin is anything special for the grade, though I wouldn't consider it to be a "just made it" coin. The obverse and reverse appear to have some sort of residue on them, which implies to me that the coin was dipped. I don't have an issue with this. I like the die crack on the upper part of the reverse.

If one paid 5 money for the coin, I think that is reasonable. I would not pay extra for the plus holder, nor would I pay extra for the sticker.
