Jewelry/coin shops are they any better than the hotel buyers??

Warning this is just venting if you odn't like reading those threads click your back button now....

I needed some cash to buy a living room set for my new place so I brought 5 5oz ATB pucks and a $5.00 gold constitution commem to a jewelry/coin shop in town that had a posted buy price of $33.50oz silver and $1720oz. gold. Layed it out on the showcase for them to look at and they didn't know what any of it was. They wouldn't make an offer on the pucks at all because they didn't know if it was real or not. After about 45mintues online he said he could give me $225.00 for the $5.00 commem. It is what it is the sale on the living room set is over I know not to go there again. But what really gets me is he has a board outside his store with his buy prices listed per ounce yet offers just over half of melt for the commem and wouldn't even offer on silver. Idk what laws are but it just rubbed me wrong and reminded my why I do all my buying/selling on the forum, HA, or Teletrade.

They aren't obligated to buy anything, esp. if they are uncomfortable about what it is they are buying. That being said, it's hard to believe that they are ignorant of the 5 ounce ATB coins.

1.) if its out of their comfort zone they wont buy
2.) and if they have too much of something ( more than they can handle believe it or not)

are reasons they might pass on items.

Their comfort level is about 30 percent of what it is worth. One ounce of gold (say gold is 1800) would be $540 dollars. I do not really care what dealers, hotel buyers pay as you do not have to use them if you plan ahead. Convience cost money.

Odd. If they won't pay posted prices for the items you mention, then for what items would they pay posted prices?

Do they need an armored truck from Fort Knox with bars of bullion, personally accompanied by President Obama and a notary public to validate his guarantee of authenticity?

More likely they are posting a buy price as a "starting point" for negotiation, not as an "actual price."

I agree with coinosaurus, they put the prices to probably lure people to bring stuff into their shop but won't even come close to paying those prices

I posted a couple days ago about a mall kiosk in this area that offered morning gold fix minus $125 for one ounce bullion AGE's. That was the most reasonable 'we buy gold' spot I have found. Cheers, RickO

I just bought a bunch of silver yesterday. The guy is buying a Harley and is gonna flip it in spring. Maybe you just found the wrong dealer. I joked recently with a few competitors that I recently saw a car dealer with a larger sign that read " WE BUY GOLD".

Having seen that , I'm considering putting up a sidewalk sign that reads : "WE SELL CARS"

Must be what they do it just seems like a "bait and switch" kind of thing to make you think your getting the posted price. Just was interesting that they didn't even know what the ATB pucks were. I didn't sell all that was wasted was a little time, thanks for letting me vent. Enjoy whats left of the weekend.

As for the $5 Constitution, since they have the buy-price sign up, bait and switch is too kind. Thieving comes to mind.

As for the ATBs, one might wonder how the word coin got into their name.

Easy to understand the ponderance with the ATB . The MINT assigned the denomination of ONE QUARTER to the thing. So, it's worth a quarter. Right ?

Is it possible that the price listed was their sell price rather than buy?

So this "jewelry/coin shop" is so advanced and staffed by such experts that they don't even have a Redbook to look up the stuff? Wow! image

If they know how to post bullion buy prices, they should know what bullion the US Mint has offered for sale. He also knew damn well what was in the commemorative $5, otherwise would not have offered anything. Those are both the kinds of things that should be well within the comfort level of the most skittish bullion buyers. So the buyer is either a moron, undeserving of your future business, or was simply looking to rip you off and make a huge margin on bullion.
