    Sharp cards, Mike!

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
  • I broke down tonight after a particularly difficult night with the kids. Here are the best from my three packs... Scanner was not working so a picture will do for now. I am super pleased with the results.

That Ryan has to be a 9. The card looks near perfect on the front to me.

Would LOVE to see a dead-on scan of that Ryan. From the picture you took the centering looks very, very good.

The bottom left corner was slightly dinged unfortunately. image It was also the gum card, but I think I cleaned up the back pretty well.

You should still post a scan. Matt can give us his input on how it compares centering-wise to the PSA 9 that cam eout last fall.

    Dave
  • Here we go... I think it is slightly diamond cut, but the centering is awesome.

Thanks Again Dave for the packs!!

Small ding in the lower left corner, mark on Roberts is from scanner and not on the card.

Is this worth subbing in a bulk submission, even though its MC????

One of the nicest Ryans I have ever seen. There is a very mild tilt to it, but no reason for it not to be a 9 (which makes it a $1k card). How is the reverse?

The word is that this was the gum card (although Joel says he cleaned it up), and also there is a slight touch/ding on the LL corner. I'm not sure I'm seeing the corner
issue in the scanned image (I see a hint of a thin black line across the corner). I have to assume that's it (Joel knows what he's talking about).

A pity if those issues are meaningful to PSA as I cannot recall seeing a better centered example. Even the one from last fall's break was slightly more tilted.
Let's wait for Matt (MattyC) to weigh in on this one.

I pulled a few cards that look mint to the naked eye but you can see a touch under 10x loupe. If there's a touch, I highly doubt PSA will grant it a 9. Good luck to the submitter in any event!
  • Opened my 8 packs today. Here's the highlights of cards.

Bobby Murcer 50/50 and mint w/no tilt
Carl Yaz 55/45 with the slightest of tilt and mint
Dave Winfield 50/50 with no tilt. A little hickey on the left border, and a wax stain on the back. Mint. How can I get rid of the stain ?

Other cards that are well centered and mint with no or limited tilts

    381, 631, 618, 445, 176, and quite a few others that a high pops.

So no Bretts, Younts, or any other stars from my end. Just a Yaz, Winfield, and Bobby Murcer. Thanks Dave for the rip.

Looks as nice as the last pulled Ryan from these packs, which landed in a 9 holder.

Sadly, he says there is indeed a ding on the lower left which will keep it from 10 consideration for sure, though this is not glaring in the scan. Since 9s are often allowed one little problem, and the overall eye appeal is clearly mint, maybe this will still become a 9. Fingers crossed.

    Bump.
Still not bretts or Younts? Why is nobody opening there packs?

Mike ... nice cards ... is that a little something on the top right corner (the way you have the card scanned) of The Mets Team or is it dust from the scanner?

I opened my 8 tonight finally.. no major major stars but again.. tons of 8+ quality commons.. happy again
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,742 ✭✭✭✭✭
Opened 7 of my 8 packs (kept one sealed for the unopened collector in me, lol)...pulled a Brett that was unfortunately OC, but out of 7 packs I pulled 20 cards that have a shot at Mint 9, including Kaline HL and Carlton a couple low pops like Tenace and Haney. Very pleased overall!

I finally had a chance to scan a few of my highlights. Most of what I have that's submittable were high pop commons. It was fun none-the-less. Do you think the Carew and Frank Robinson will grade out or get the dreaded 'MC'? I measure 95-5 sometimes and other times I get 90-10. I guess it depends on where they measure the back. I measure at the point where the cartoon border starts to arch. I use caliper with a guage, so it's difficult to read the difference when it's OC so much. I'll probably submit them anyway and give it a shot. Worst case I'm out shipping costs both ways. Also, as mentioned earlier, the Heidemann is sweet except for a big zit on the surface on the right border. It's an 8 best case, most likely a 7.

Gemint, the Robinson is an 8 at best, imo..you might have had a real shot at a 9 on the Carew but that back is pretty OC, and they have been harsh with minis lately, so I'm guessing another 8 on the Carew as well, maybe an 8.5.

I sent in about 20 from this rip (and about 20 N6's from my last sub) -- got loggage today.

Sorry no Lolich in my stack. It seems like the distribution was fairly tight...several Ryans, F Robbys, Carews but no Younts or Rice rookies that I can recall.
  • Any Brett's yet ?
  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,121 ✭✭✭✭✭

    << <i>Any Brett's yet ? >>

One person mentioned they pulled a Brett earlier but I think it was too OC to get a good grade.
  • Better late than never!! Been crazy busy last two weeks with work and family. Thanks again to Dave for doing this rip!! Got some great star power in my packs and some nice minty commons also. No Brett or Yount but no complaints from me!! The Reggie is nicely centered but has some snow across his face. The Rice is pretty nice but o/c on the back as is the Reggie image The Carlton has better centering on the back. It's NICE!

O/C on the back is no biggie. That Reggie looks great.

DING DING DING DING ... we have a winner! Looks like a 1 of 1 Mike. Are you keeping it or are you going to be smart and let the Registry nuts bid this up like a bunch of mad men? Or are you going to list it as a BIN with a friggin CRAZY price? GOOD LUCK!

I pulled a Brett but it was OC...with low pop 9s and 1/1 10s, who needs a Brett anyway, LOL..

Edit: Congrats on the grades, Mike!

Wow! A Messersmith 10. Congrats Mike.

I've been just reading the back end of this thread. You guys made a believer out of me especially with that 10 just pulled. That is a real tough card.

    aconte
  • Yeah, I'm still a skeptic about these packs being legit. Leaving those 1 of 1's, low pop 9's and Mint Nolan Ryan's have the sign of a "resealed" to me. Haha, joking aside, I hope all of my packs have a Brett and Yount in it. Those are some nice results!
  • I will post again....

If anyone has a raw #561, #589 or #628 that they do not intend on sending in for grading, I would be interested in these. The last three cards I need to complete my set.

    Please PM me....
