GTG Bust...and an honest question....grade revealed in first post.

Billet7Billet7 Posts: 4,923 ✭✭✭
I recently purchased the following coin, would you like to try your hand at guessing the grade. It is certified by our wonderful hosts.

Now for the question, could one reasonably expect to see luster on a coin in this grade range? Most of the time people try to pass reflectivity from a previously cleaned surface...that has retoned as luster when dealing in this grade range...but I really think I see luster. Am I crazy to think that it's even possible on a coin in this grade? Please give me input!

that is a very fine looking quarter you have there Billet! image

As for your question, I think it depends on what you define as luster.

If you determine luster as "mint frost" - then no, IMO the probability would be slim and none on that coin, even in the most recessed of areas

If you look at luster that as the "flow lines" caused by the minting process (which then projects lusterous reflectivity from protected regions of the surface) - then yes, quite possible and I would look and somewhat expect it on a coin like that

A very nice looking coin to be sure, but I don't think I could go along with the VF-25 - VF-30 folks, so I will say VF-20.

The grade could be anywhere from VF-20 to VF-30, so I'll split at 25!

VF33, and yes, I think that is a form of muted luster in the recesses. very nice!

You purchased the coin so I'd like to discuss your mental state. image

...and I'd like to add I could see it as an XF, but don't tell my shrink.

Looks 30ish, and yes, I have seen trace luster on VF coins from time to time...

    VF-25

Yes, you can see luster in protected areas on a coin in VF. But I have never seen a VF where the unprotected areas show any luster. If you are referring to the "shiny" area above Liberty from around K-11 to K-12, I think that is the result of an old cleaning.

Nonetheless, the coin is REALLY nice!

VF-20, and no you should not see any original mint luster on a coin in this grade. All of the surfaces have had their original "mint skin" worn off. The lowest grade that luster is normally expected is EF-45 although uneven wear on some early coins can take it down to VF-35 at the very very lowerest IMO.

No, I'm not talking about the "shiny" area most are referring to, I agree it's not mint luster...what I'm talking about is the very small amount of "shine" that appears under the bust (and in other locations, but is really only apparent in the pics under the bottom of the bust in the most protected area.) It has a different look than what appears on the upper half of the coin. BTW the shiny part shows up as being shiny because it's a direct reflection of light. Probably still from some sort of cleaning effort, but not really as "reflective" as you might think. I did this type of shot to showcase the muted yellows and blues that you can see.

The grade is PCGS VF20...which floored me when I saw it! THAT kind of obverse on a 20! I've seen XF's that aren't really much better. The reverse is probably not much better than a 20...maybe a 25, but I believe the obverse has to be a 30. So I really feel it should be in the 25-30 range, at 30 it would be maxed out, really it's probably a 28! image

It will stay in the current holder fyi.

That's nicer than a 20 Derek! Look around at others available, yours is well above the standard. I like it a lot!
