I know it's not really precious metal, but it was kinda fun seeing the face on the teller yesterday when I asked for

Why not? About $1200-$1300 worth of Nickel for $1000. It's almost like stealing......

Yeah Weiss. Why would you ever buy 220 pounds of metal for less than the metal is worth and has a built in safety of never being worth less (nominally) than you paid??? What are you, some kind of moron? Who buys metal for under melt value????
Only if you have a good way of cashing in. Note, that I'm not saying it's a bad idea to buy $1,000 of Nickels.

Gecko, been there. Done that. I was asking Weiss the question, and I was interested in his reasoning. Anything wrong with that? You can attempt to dis my comments if you want, like you do everyone else's, but my question was posed in the interest of a discussion, whether you approve or not.

Maybe he needs some door stops AND ready change for the vending machines? Or is trying to fill up an old blue Whitman?

Wes, that would work! I'm really wondering about whether coin will trump paper at some point. I have my own unintended stashes of nickels and clad halves, accumulated as an "investment" (ok, a pretty bad investment) over the years. The one thing I can say is that it is a pita to keep moving the heavy stuff around.
When it comes down to it, a nickel will be worth a nickel - but if you want to buy something worth a couple dollars, how many boxes of nickels are you prepared to store for the "long haul"?
And if you subscribe to the Gecko theory of being a moron for NOT doing it, how many times are you willing to haul around 220 lbs of boxes of nickels to net out $200 per turn? You'll have to gear up, and hope that they don't put an end to it before you get rich.

That's why I brought a box of nickels home last week (in addition to the fact I want to hoard Cu). I'm going to wait until I have 20 boxes though before I have a weekend long album filling 'party'. I also need to learn a lot more about varieties before I sort that many nickels

A few reasons:
The metal value is greater than face by a fair percent now (12%). There is a reasonable chance that the value will continue to increase. There is no downside potential below my entry level--with the face value they can just be spent for what I paid for them.
There seems to be a real shift recently from rhetoric to action regarding changing composition of cents and nickels:
http://news.coinupdate.com/legislation-seeks-steel-cents-and-nickels-1117/
The only real potential loss is opportunity cost, which at current rates of return is minimal, or devaluation, which should be mitigated by the metal content.
I wouldn't put a huge amount into nickels. But this seems like a worthwhile and fun hedge with almost no downside and plenty of up.

next to impossible to find Libertads around here. Congrats on your finds. I'm still trying to fill two albums with Libertad BU issues
and have two rolls of the silver libs coming in a couple of weeks. I hit the bottom of a few weeks ago pretty close to dead on. (That does not happen often).
