No particular reason or anything... just that 50 years ago was 1962, so please post a coin from that year...

Edited to add. OMG!!!! did I look at this wrong. I'll try and find a '62.

Edited a second time - I don't have anything in Photo Bucket from '62. Oh well 50 years, 60 years, at my age there is very little difference.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

Wow is that Frankie ever black and white!

But I would have sworn SkyMan you would have added that of that year John Glenn became the fifth person in space, the third American in space and the first American to orbit the Earth, aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, on the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission, circling the globe three times during a flight lasting 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds. image

Ah yes, the Seattle World's Fair. I recently sold 750 silver dollars for a lady - the million coins were sold off in lots of 1000. She and her husband bought a lot. image

How about a break from the same old boring US designs?

These are the only non-US ones I have photographed:

A New Zealand penny purchased in 1973. I got a 10% discount, so it cost 27 cents.

I have quite a few extremely nice errors from 1962 as it is my birth year.

Enough to make my own thread, but it's not my birthday yet image

    1962 coins...

On the day I was born, these were mostly common "essentially worthless" 5 year old coins...

    Now I feel old!

And PS...I always liked the Franklin half...while others consider it boring or too plain, I always thought it had its charms. Funny that the series is experiencing a bit of a resurgence as it gets older.

hey LVT, what i've been told is that during the latter 50's and early 60's the Mint was experimenting with different planchet rinses on the Proof coins. the result is that the chemical(s) that were used reacted with the packaging and the metal. the years from 1960-1964 seem most prevelant to tone, especially when the seal between coins is broken. i have seen all of the coins tone but the Nickels seem to color the most vividly. for 1962, i have the example pictured in PCGS plastic, another coin in an ANACS holder and one in the still intact Mint packaging-----the color on them all is very similar with the fields one shade and the devices another!!!

What is this error and is for sale? Improperly annealed planchet???

image I PM'd the OP on it. Like Keets says, mint packaging/process problems... It's a PCGS 65 Proof toned red. Sent in when PCGS had 1 free submission every 4 months.
