    or

is it a conflict of interest to authenticate your own packs you sell? >>

    a) PSA (who else)

    b) possibly

My biggest beef is the travel a pack has to take. I've had packs in my possession since 1975. A few years ago I sent them to PSA to have them slabbed. The packs traveled from me (NY) to PSA (CA), then PSA (CA) sends them to Steve in (IL). Steve says they were resealed and when I received them back (IL to CA to NY), they were opened. >>

whoa! any good cards left in those packs?

I always thought Memory Lane and PSA were somehow linked

  • << <i>I always thought Memory Lane and PSA were somehow linked >>

yeah Memory lane sells many sweet graded PSA cards...

they dont authenticate or grade them, they just send them in

    << <i>How many Montana's will usually be found in a box? >>

I've probably purchased 30 packs from BBCE over the last 6 months and I haven't pulled 1. It would be sweet irony if I pull one in my 1 pack coming this time. >>

My first ever order from BBCE included 2 packs of 1981 topps (before I knew how standup Steve Hart was)... I pulled a sweet Montana rookie! I hope you do to!
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,950 ✭✭✭✭
I also pulled a Montana RC out of one of my first 1981 Topps Football group rips (out of four packs). It was slightly OC, graded an 8. Same rip, I pulled a Rice RC out of one of my two 1986 Topps packs.

Very nice. I first heard about BBCE in Bill Simmons article when he went to the National and bought stuff from him. I ordered 10 packs of '80 baseball thinking it would likely be garbage and probably searched. First pack I pulled a Henderson and I was sold. I haven't purchased older stuff anywhere else since.

I am anxiously awaiting mine. If I don't get them tonight, I am going to have to bust into my very modest unopened collection for my fix... I don't think I can collect unopened material since I can only keep it unopened for so long.

  • Received my FB pack run today, opened the 92 score and 82 topps pack. 82 pack was shredded in the back but, cards were all in great condition ( see pic)..

80 football pack- Clay Matthews RC OC left to right
81 pack-not much to speak of
82 pack-Scan Below plus James Lofton IA, Jack Ham wax stain on front.
83 pack- Joe Montana Record Breaker
    84 pack-Kellen Winslow, Marcus Allen

Also I think the Dent is Nice!!! But check out the back. Is it still worth subbing???
    image
    image

    86 pack had this
    image

    82 pack had this
    image

Overall I am very please with the results... I think I did pretty well on these single packs even though I didnt hit one of the bigger rookies, I did hit some decent cards.

Received my football run today! Didn't open the 81, 82, 84, 85 & 86 packs. Wasn't going to open the 83 either, was going to sub that run on the pack special this month, but this pack had two worn-down-to-the-cards-inside corners... so I opened it along with the 80, 87, 88 Topps & 89 Score packs...

    My decent pulls...

1980 Topps - Clay Matthews RC... every card in pack was pretty OC
    1983 Topps - Tony Dorsett
    1987 Topps - Lawrence Taylor
    1988 Topps - Eric Dickerson
1989 Score - Deion Sanders RC & Michael Irvin RC

5 cards listed are probably all PSA 9 worthy... thus, not worth subbing, but decent enough to stash away for a few decades image

*Edited to add the 80 Matthews, didn't realize that was his RC until reading a post above
  • epatmythesepatmythes Posts: 1,514 ✭✭✭
Okay... boredom didn't last long... I convinced myself I saw enough flaws on some of the packs to make them not worthy of paying to have graded... So I opened the rest except the 86 pack...

1981 - Nothing to speak of
1982 - Nothing to speak of
    1984 - Lawrence Taylor
1985 - Warren Moon RC (Pretty nice too, possible 9)

Personally I wouldn't bother with the Dent. I'm guessing it's some sort of wax/gum stain?
Or does the paper just have some discoloration?

Here's the results of my 2 FB runs with an additional 2 '81 racks. Still haven't pulled a Montana yet... except back in '81

80 packs - Nothing, all were off centered
81 packs - Largent (oc), Simms, Fouts (oc), Harris, Dorsett, the racks were not as great as the ones we ripped last year from the case.
82 packs - No Stars, several nicely centered commons though
83 packs - Half were badly tilted, the other half were very nice! No major hits.
84 packs - Marino (oc), mostly all were off centered, many dinged corners as well.
85 packs - Long, Marino (oc)
86 packs - Dorsett (oc), Reed (oc), Payton RB
87 packs - Rice, not much else, nice condition cards though
89 Topps packs - not much here but most of the cards were stunning.
89 Score packs - Irvin, great condition cards, I my have to look into collecting this set!

The Dent was on the back of the pack, so it looks like it is wax from the wrapper....
  • Not worth submitting

  • Here are my packs from this Group un-Rip, thank you Mike and BBCE. Even with my magnifying glass and bright light bright light, I can't tell who is on front or back.

Got my (2) 76 BB cellos today. Not going to open but I think I may be done with un-opened. I am just so tired of getting commons on the front and the back. Seems like I can never get a break. All I get is Bobby Mitchell and an Orioles team card on the front

    image

Bob Apodaca and some guy named Brett on the back............

    image

    imageimage

Ok, I am not really done with un-opened. All this is does is fuel my passion.

I know it has been said before, this is the reason Steve gets our business. You know you are getting legitimate packs and if he makes a mistake, he fixes immediately.

Since I got the Brett, someone will be getting a pack with Yount on the back as well.

Wow, congrats! I guess that means someone else will be getting the Yount pack. Is the Brett usually centered on the front if it's centered on the back? If so, that would be a tough one to decide whether to open our not for most people. My guess is the corners would be dinged due to the tight wrap.
  • I would actually think it would be better left sealed. One open can be had for less than $20 *even in nice condition) but a sealed one, you ll get more bang for your buck because hard core brett collectors will pay nice for something like that - untouched. I know I would if I was a huge fan.

So is anyone else going to open theirs?? I wanna see some wrappers being torn apart. Unfortunately for me, I will have to wait till tomorrow seeing how I didnt get it today. Odd because I thought for sure today image

    Thanks.

Your probably right about the corners. Financially it makes sense to keep it sealed. Collecting wise it makes sense to keep sealed in my opinion. Not to many 76 cellos with Brett on the front or back vs how many raw ones are out there.

I can't wait to see the Yount.

    JK!
I hate that they dont deliver on sat!!
  • Absolute garbage in the BB cello and FB pack run. I definitely don't think the packs were reseal jobs b/c others have gotten good stuff, just luck of the draw, but it really sucks when I came out on the short end of the stick with every single pack. I doubt I got a dozen HOFers combined, much less anything approaching anything of value unless there is some common out there that's high dollar PSA 10. Again, just luck of the draw, but definitely the least fun I've ever had spending $110. The absolute worst and probably the worst pack ever was the 1980T Football which featured 2 each of 6 guys I truly had never heard of (granted I was 1 in 1980). Going to have to be burning a huge hole in my pocket to participate again.

The Last 84 Football pack I opened didn't have a wrapped piece of gum, so that kind of threw me. Which I could remember where I got that pack from. Probably Ebay.
Was that the only year they used wrapped gum?

    Opened all mine...

76 Cello - Nothing, both packs were almost identical with mostly same players.
80s run - Nothing except a Puckett Fleer which has a nasty print horizontal line on the bottom border.

  • Sorry for the blank post, iPhone wouldn't give me an option to edit?

I got one hit out of my football run, I got the Aikman RC. The 1980 pack was by far the worst pack as far as quality and the 1982 I considered the best ad far as corners and centering.

Also got the Andre Reed RC but it was OC
