Thats a nice card but why spend over $4 grand for it. Its not like its a Mantle or Ruth or something to that caliber. Its just an Ozzie Smith Card. Price doesnt even fluctuate these days.

One must understand the power of the PSA Set Registry to get why low pop cards sell for so much.

Not everyone collects Mantle or Ruth. Ozzie has a HUGE following and I know many people that would LOVE to have that card in a 10. And it's not just Ozzie collectors. HOF rookie collectors would be after that card. So you have a low pop card that appeals to a large number of people and many of them have plenty of money to spare.

Youre absolutely correct. I just got back into the hobby around 6 months ago and Ive gotta be honest when I say I am floored when I see this kind of stuff sell for as much. Amazed is actually more like it.
Im not in grading my cards (not that I have anything that will truly fetch a lot except 1 guaranteed and that one I bought graded) but maybe I should reconsider getting a PSA subscription. It it worth it? I dont plan on ever selling my cards so would you guys recommend it for someone such as myself?

Now that the pop report is free you can piggyback with people here any time when you want to submit (assuming you dont run into a thief). Thus, unless you plan on creating a registry set I don't see much advantage in buying the subscription for many people who used to do it.

How many Mantles and Ruths have such major centering issues that make getting a 10 next to impossible even if the card is otherwise totally flawless?
On that note, the 1984 Donruss Joe Carter RC has centering issues just as bad if not worse than Ozzie; how many PSA 10s (if any) are going around and what's the going rate for one?
Thats true, but If had those funds, Im not sure I would go towards an Ozzie (nothing against him because who doesnt really like Ozzie) but I guess its more for those die hard collectors that must have that hard to find gem added to their collection. If anything, that seems like quite a great investment if someone were to hold on to it for about 10 more years. Kinda makes you wanna go out and buy a wax box or 2 of 1979 Topps and see if youre feeling lucky.
There are 95 PSA 10's of the Joe Carter out of 1,349 in the population report. There are 4 out of 4,614 of the Ozzie Smith in a PSA 10. Those cards are miles apart both in quantity and price.

Thanks for posting that link. I can see that driving a purchase of this card for sure.
The Ozzie Smith rookie is one of the marque cards from the past 35 years and with the vast majority having centering problems this is true diamond in the rough.
Thunderdan I will leave it to you big dogs. This card belongs in a high end baseball card collection.
I did have a PSA 8 OC I sold recently for peanuts on EBAY. If I ever get a wild hair I would not mind this and a Henderson in a PSA 9. Both are very cool cards for sure.
What is the hammer price on this? Any predictions?

What is wild is you only have a 5% chance of a PSA 9. I think if Foo checks the pop reports he will see that you might have better chances of winning the low end lottery then pulling and subbing a PSA 10.
I think it is exciting when cards sell for what seems to most as high prices.
These type of events are good for the hobby and if cards from the more modern era have the potential to be very expensive one day it is these ultra rare Gem's.
Obviously the current price is expensive but if the population of these does not increase longer term this could get a lot more expensive.
I understand the power of the registry, and I know this card is extremely tricky when it comes to centering, but over $10,000 with the buyer's premium for a non-"vintage" base rookie card is baffling.

It comes down to The Registry. For those of you not familiar with it, it's probably best to stay that way
But if you are curious, some of the heavy hitters like to collect this set in as close to "PSA 10" that is possible
