A Cameo that isn't. 1964 Lincoln

I sure thought this was a lock CAM or DCAM. Shows what I know.

    The lettering.
Overlooked so easily. If the CAMEO doesn't show on the lettering? No designation no matter how chalky the portrait (although NGC will award the STAR many times).

From the picture the fields of the coin lack the deep watery mirrored look required for a Cameo designation. I have a proof 1964 nickel that looks just like the pictured cent. The thickness of the frost on the devices is off the charts, but the fields are not sufficiently mirrored.

What do the fields of the cent look like in hand?

Regardless of the lack of a Cameo designation, the pictured cent is drop dead gorgeous.

My first impression is that the obverse lettering and date are not sufficiently cameo to earn the designation.

I think that's as close as you can get without being cameo. Nice coin!

Horrible coin. However I could make room for it. It would go well right next to my horrible '64 dime and nickel.

JK about the horrible bit, it is a beautiful coin. Certainly PQ or Plus or Star or something in my book. I'd pay more for that than I would for a brilliant coin. The lettering looks OK to me. Perhaps Sanction is right about the fields not being mirrorlike enough?

I have gotten bitten by many of these. The frost is there, but the fields just aren't deep enough. I have had a dozen of these type of SMS coins!! Thought for sure they would CAM but nuttin!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

If you had left the grade hidden and said it was a CAM, I wonder if this thread would have been full of "what a nice cameo" comments. Though perhaps with some different posters.

Going by the pic, I would have expected CAM.

Gorgeous coin. I agree with the other posters who have said that while the devices are frosty enough for a CAM, the fields don't really have that mirror contrast effect which is also required for the designation.

As I have said many times, it is all about the mirrors... Or lack thereof!
And I ain't lying this time.

I agree with those that say the mirrors aren't deep enough. The pics don't exhibit deep mirrors.
At PCGS you have to have both deep mirrors and frosted devices to get a cam or dcam.

If you get the deep mirrors and frosty devices, the lettering tends to be cameo as well, so I don't see the lettering as a determining factor.
