The Other Major 1955 DDO

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
If not for the famous and dramatic 1955 DDO-1, this DDO would be considered a major DDO for the year. Instead, many have no knowledge of this awesome DDO in the Lincoln series. This is the 1955 DDO-2, also known as the 1955 DDO-FS-021.9.

Most examples of this die variety are Late Die State examples that can almost go unnoticed, but if you find one in an Early Die State, like this coin, well it just stands up and screams at you (like it did when I found this one).

The biggie DDO-1 is believed to be available in quantities ranging from 8,000 to 16,000, URS-15
The 55 DDO-02 on the other hand is believed to be an URS-7 variety, or only 33 to 64 known examples (Akin to a R5--R5+ rarity).

Keep an eye out for this variety in every 55 search.

Ah Yes, I had a PCGS MS-63 RD in EDS that I sold to a board member here a few years ago, I miss it, but glad it found a good home.

The pops are so low on this one because it is hard to see in later die stages, but these EDS coins are awesome in hand.
More of these would be found if people were to look for them and not just look for the monster DDO.

Not me, I prefer the DDO-2 as it is much more "rare" and "exclusive." This coin is finally starting to be appreciated by the "non specialist" and is commanding a larger premium each and every day. Buy all you can at $200-$300 in MS RD if you can, get then get them certified. If you don't want them I will pay $250 for all the MS RD examples you have.

Whenever I am searching dealer stock for RPMs and varieties, I always give the '55s a check in hopes it might be one of these. No luck, yet.

To me, the big 1955 DDO is such a freak with such incredible separation that it almost doesn't seem like a doubled die. They almost look fake. The 1972 DDO-1 is probably my favorite DDO in the Lincoln series and quite a bargain compared to the 1955 DDO-1.

I agree Regulator, in fact I was more excited when I got my 55 DDO-2 and 72 DDO-4 than I was when I got my 69-S DDO and 70-S LD DDO.

I think that the population estimates on the #2 are very low. I've had two that I've gotten
by wheat cent searching and I've never found a #1. I put one of my #2's on Ebay about
two years ago with the DDO and good pics and it did not get a bid. Opening bid was 99¢.

It appears that there are few takers for the #2 or nobody cares as it's just the little brother
    to the #1.

To the best of my recollection, I have never seen a Variety 2 in the flesh.

I've always liked this variety too, I picked up an example in a RB ANACS holder a year or so ago (can't remember the numerical grade, it was low MS) for a cheap price just because it seemed undervalued.

If anyone can verify this coin as the DDO #2. Listed as FS-1955-102. Thanks for any help..all would be appreciated..image
The coin is listed on Ebay raw now. image

The existence of a second kind of 1955 DDO cent is similar to the situation with the 1961 Proof Franklin Half Dollar. It has multiple DDRs, only one of which gets significant attention. The major DDR 1961 proof half has doubling which can be easily seen without a loupe. The other DDR's for this date are much less noticeable and you have to use a loupe to see the doubling. The number of major DDR 1961 proof half dollars that exist is very low (about 200?) compared to the major 1955 DDO cent (20k+).

I looked for a 1955 DDO cent for years as a YN in the 1960's and 1970's. Never found one. Maybe one day I will buy one. It is very cool to look at.

It looks like a late die state and some shelf doubling, not a DDO. (IMO) good job on the photos.
