RYK's Dirty DOG of the Day Deal

Well, I have decided to thin the collection (again), selling duplicates and misfits. I will save the dreck and crap for other venues, but I thought I would offer some of the nicer items here, first. From now until Thanksgiving, I will add one coin each day. Whatever is not sold here by Thanksgiving will go to a dealer or Heritage or maybe even back to the safety deposit box. There will be PCGS coins, OGHs, lots of CAC stickers (sorry, green and gold stickers only, no platinum image ), an Eliasberg coin, southern gold, and, of course, lots of dirt.

Without further ado, here is today's installment. I'll quote Doug Winter: " The 1856-D is one of the rarest – and certainly the most underrated – Dahlonega half eagles." I'll quote a price: $SOLD, and I'll let you look at the photo.

1856-D $5 PCGS/OGH/CAC XF-45

Terms:

Reasonable offers considered. Checks preferred. I will pay for shipping. You will pay for PayPal if you would prefer to use it. 7 days money back (real money, not store credit) if you are not satisfied, but you pick up return postage. All payments should be received within seven days, unless otherwise agreed, or the deal may be considered void. In most cases, coins will be shipped on Thursday or Saturday. I have extensive references on the forum, in the coin biz, and with the auction houses. I have had 100's of transactions on the forum with at least 50 forum members and no problems or issues.

Today's installment will be from the "Norseman88 Six", a group of 6 No Motto OGH eagles purchased in a special transaction, assisted by forum member and Vikings fan, Norseman88. It is an 1844-O $10 PCGS/OGH/CAC XF-40:

The coin was sent to the CAC after the images were taken. Yes, it's a green sticker, not gold or platinum.

It has the body of a strong AU coin, with excellent color, but some marks on the face limit the grade. Here's what Doug Winter says about the issue: "The 1844-O is one of three New Orleans eagles from the 1840s with a mintage of over 100,000. It is among the more common issues from this decade but it is a very rare coin in higher grades." Thanks a lot, Doug.

This coin is not for someone who will dissect each mark and evaluate with a 30x lens scope. It is for someone who appreciates extreme originality and the flaws and warts that sometimes accompany it. $SOLD (or will trade for your unopened box of ... image ).

Today's offering is a favorite date of mine in the Dahlonega series, the 1853-D $2.50 PCGS (OGH) VF-30 CAC. With a mintage of 3178 and a total PCGS pop in all grades of 59, it is a legitimately scarce coin. The current offering is original with a slight rotation noted on the reverse. $SOLD, delivered.

*The coin was submitted to the CAC after this image was taken.

I've known Norseman for years, his collection got thinned out and he had to sell over 13,000 ounces of silver as he got divorced in march but he still has some nice stuff.

Okay, it's late, and today's installment will be a bit unusual.

Four circulated quarter eagles, one from the 1840's, one for the 50's, one from the 60's, and one from the 70's.

1846-O PCGS VF-30 (never submitted to CAC)
    1851 PCGS AU-50/CAC
    1861 PCGS AU-50/CAC New Reverse
    1872-S PCGS VF-20/CAC

All are solid or above average for the grade. 4 coins, one price, HOLD, delivered. Here are the photos of the two best coins. The others were from recent Heritage auctions.

    I paid $690. Offered here for $HOLD.

This will be the last coin before the holiday and this series of offerings will end. I will be selling a group of coins through Doug Winter at FUN. Tune in later for further (not Furthur image ) details.

At any rate, today's offering is the second dirtiest 1890-CC $20 I have ever seen. The dirtiest is one grade lower, was more expensive, and resides in my collection. I purchased the coin in an NGC XF-45 holder, and it now resides in a PCGS/CAC XF-45 holder, for $HOLD, delivered.

Today's offering is a Liberty $10 from the Eliasberg collection. Yes, that Eliasberg.

This 1887-S $10 in NGC/CAC AU-58 is attractive for the grade. While a common coin, the pedigree is uncommon, and there are not very many Eliasberg US gold coins that can be obtained for $SOLD.

Today's coin is an 1883-CC $20 PCGS XF-45/CAC. PCGS price guide says $2950. Last auction sale was a non-CAC piece for $2645. Offered here for $SOLD, delivered.

The next item is a coin that I have some hesitation to sell, not because it fits my collection as it really does not, but because I think it is a very cool coin for what it is. The 1856-S $2.50 is for most of us the first collectible QE from the San Francisco mint (unless you have between a quarter and a half mill at your disposal for the 1854-S). This coin was purchased from Mark Feld, who acquired from a relation on the Mehl side of the family. (Other than an invoice and the word of Mark, I have no further proof, and there is no "Mehl" on the slab.) The coin itself is naturally lustrous and is housed in a "fatty" NGC holder with a green CAC sticker. It has the initial look of an uncirculated coin with perhaps a bit of wear and friction in the fields. It is more lustrous than the photo suggests. It's not your typical NGC AU-58. There are only 5 CAC'ed coins in 58 with one CAC coin higher. Offering price is $SOLD, delivered.

Of a mintage of 72,000, 175 are said to exist (per CoinFacts).

Today's coin boasts a modest mintage of 8350 coins. Doug Winter says, "The 1881-O is the scarcest of the three low mintage New Orleans eagles produced between 1880 and 1882." It is a perfect, dirty gold example in NGC/CAC XF-45, offered here for SOLD.

Today's coin is one of two coins I currently own in a PCGS Genuine holder. The Code is 92 for Cleaning. As is often said, "I have seen worse coins in regular holders." The 1839-O quarter eagle was the first gold coin from the New Orleans mint and is the only NO gold coin with an obverse mint mark. Offered here, for $SOLD.

The next coin, the 1866-S quarter eagle, was feature in my ANA display at Doug Winter's table this past summer. I considered it to be in my top 5 dirtiest quarter eagles. I have decided to part with it. The photo below was taken before the coin was stickered by CAC. It is offered at $SOLD, delivered.

Today's selection is an 1842-O $10 in PCGS/CAC XF-45, which is a better date in the No Motto Liberty $10 series. The mintage is 27,400, and the total PCGS population in all grades is 129 coins. The PCGS price guide lists this coin at $2250. The last XF-45 to sell at auction was an NGC (non-CAC) that sold for $2000. This coin is available for $HOLD, delivered.
