  • Some great answers!

    Here are mine:

Not sure I'ver reached the numismatic level yet, so I'll stick with Top 10 Reasons to Collect Coins:

1.Following experience with beanie babies, stamps, comics and baseball cards figure I would go with a ‘sure fire’ investment
2.Grandparents left me two Proof Roosevelt dimes and three cleaned Morgans. I would’ve preferred 360 acres in Malibu or controlling interest in Ford, but we play the hand were dealt.
    3. The local Star Trek, Majic- The Gathering, and Dungeons and Dragons clubs wouldn’t accept my application.
    4. Sunlight Kills
    5. I could never see the logic in maintaining cash in the checking account
    6. That one time I spent the entire paycheck on a coin, brought it home, and dropped it down the ventilation shaft – I was hooked!
    7. Cannot think of a higher calling than ferreting out Chinese counterfeits from the stash
    8. The required wardrobe has a low cost entry barrier
    9 The hours aren’t bad
    10. There just aren’t that many things I am willing to pick out of the gutter

    4. Finding uncirculated Ikes at the banks.
    5. Finding bargains at Flea markets and the like.
6.Flipping mint products for a profit.
    7. Enjoyment of mint errors.
    8. The look on the face of young kids when you give them some old coins.
    9. Hedge against hyperinflation.
    10. Very few hobbies can be said to be profitable and fun over time, numismatics is one of them.

    It's about challenges for me:

    1. The challenge of hunting for quality mid-grade Barber Halves that possess the right "look"
    2. The challenge of increasing my numismatic knowledge so that I can become an even more astute coin buyer
    3. The challenge of improving my numismatic photography skills
    4. The challenge of maintaining relationships with collecting friends who are competing with me for the same coins
    5. The challenge of convincing my co-workers that their grandfathers' collections of common date "Wheat Pennies" and 1964 Washington Quarters aren't "extremely valuable"
    6. The challenge of identifying the specific odors present at any given dealer's bourse table
    7. The challenge of not losing my patience while sifting through the 4,000,000 Morgan Dollars and 12,000,000 Statehood Quarters at the local monthly 20-dealer show to find any other numismatically related item
    8. The challenge of finding bourse food that doesn't cause diarrhea or acid reflux
    9. The challenge of maintaining my sanity while wading through 40,000 Ebay listings of "AU" coins that are actually VGs but whose sellers justify the "AU" classification by bleating the "grading is subjective" mantra
    10. The challenge of trying to find useful, informative Ricko posts
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.
