I have the fastest internet speed offered by Cox Cable, 20 Meg?. My PC is a Dell i7 with 8 Gigs of memory. Worked non stop trying to get through for 4 hours. Finally made it at 4:08 EDT. Tried everything I could think of to get through and nothing was working. I even tried 4 different browsers. Chrome was the one that finally got me in. I don't understand much about how these things work, and why one browser should work better than another. I do know that my regular browser, FF, was absolutely worthless this time. Had I stayed with it I never would have gotten through.

For a SereneDude, you're not very serene.
As to why I got in such a "tizzy", if it's not clear from my posts, that you have a comprehension problem.
One must wonder why someone who would write: "...the complaining here from those that couldn't get through is getting a bit stale" would even read a thread entitled: "...Official -- I tried to order but was unable to Order a 25th Ann Set list."
I personally have nothing to gain either way. If they sell as planned, I get two sets from my buddy. If not, and they change, I and my father get one each.
I am very sorry for those who lost out unless they change to one/HH. This set has a huge collector base. Tens of thousands of these collectors will be left out in the cold. It is for their benefit that I hope that The Mint changes the HH limits.
Lastly, did it ever occur to you to heed the old adage that if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all??
As with previous flips, you have shown you handle things well. Kudos to you! And, I agree with what you have posted.
on the question about Amazon. Not sure how the mint could really farm out the hot items to them. The mint's system works for the vast majority of their items. It is the "rare" flip item that kills the system. What they could do, imho, is to temporarily increase their phone call center for the lines. That, imho, would likely give the most bang for the short term buck.
Amazon can handle things like this better because they have server farms (the mint is probably very localized and doesn't have near the server resources) in different locations. Google and Microsoft do the same. That said, there are still times when their sites bog down...maybe just not as bad as the mint's >>
Allow me to make a stale comment about not being able to place my order until late in the afternoon. I am ticked. I'm especially ticked that some folks still have to game the system to order more sets than the stated HH limits. Frankly, the staleness of my comment is in the ears of the beholder.
Hey Raufus, good for you!

so Im at a loss when I hear "I was on the phone and internet all day"

Explain why I'm wrong, because I don't get it. I know myself, and most people I know, want to buy real in hand coins...not ideas of coins. Especially in an instance like this where a lot is potentially up in the air until people have their boxes. Obviously anything can happen, but once these are in hand it makes more sense that more solid deals will be going through.

I , the guy who works for me and a freind started dialing at 12 noon, I used both the shop phone and my cell phone and dialed simultanously for over 2 1/2 hours. Then finally , the guy who works for me got thru. He ordered his 5, and then asked if I could order mine, and they said no, must call back, at this point I was pised . Then all three of us continued to dial 4 phones for at least another 45 min, and the guy who works for me got thru once again.( he must have had a magic phone) So he handed me the phone and I ordered mine. Then my freind got thru and he ordered his. Oh by the way, at the same time, My wife and the guy who works for me's wife was at home trying to get thru via the web site, both with no luck. So we called the wifes and said to stop trying via the web as we all got ours.
fast forward to friday, the guy who works for me and my freind immeadiately flipped theres pre sale to Apmex, but I am holding onto mine at the present time. I will eventually sell 4 of my sets, but I am holding out as I beleive this is going to be a winner , at least in the near term.
three of my good customers who always order , were not able to obtain them this time. They were upset. One was dialing two phones and using the web with no luck.

......... Exactly... That Is Exactly The Point I Am Trying To Get Across.......It Seems To Me That there Are more Flippers Buying These Sets Than There Are " Real" Buyers........ The Real True Coin Collecters..... So Goes The Pyramid Scheme... <Laugh>,, <Laugh>
I could be mistaken, however, think that the silver eagle is the most widely traded coin in the world. Why would you even venture a guess that the sets would not continuously bring a premium after the sell out?
Can you imagine the uproar if the US Mint servers actually COULD handle unlimited ordering? Sell-Out in 1 minute on this 100,000 item product offering.
Wow, I sneezed and missed getting my sets by 3 seconds!
Yes, we can expect a crash on these but I'd be surprised to see $299 again unless silver crashes hard or the zombie apocalypse comes.
A lot of "true collectors" are also flippers. On popular mint releases, a lot of folks have figured out that they can get their coins for free by buying multiples and flipping a few.

I also agree with Raufus on this one. SereneDude, I've read several of your posts (and not just on this post) and you do seem to have the attitude of, "I've got mine and that's all that matters". It was pure luck that you (or anybody for that matter) got any sets. It wasn't because you or I were smarter or worked harder to get a set, than the people who didn't get one. I, like, thousands of others were right there starting at 9AM (Pacific time) and continued for 4 hours before I got in. But 2 of my friends who were also collectors (and NOT buying them for me) did not get in until well past the "Wait List" and will probably not get any. They were there from the start also, just like me, but luck did not shine on them. Just be thankful that luck was on your side because you could have very easily be the ones with the "stale" complaining here.
Was on the phone and computor from 12:01 redialing and refreshing the mint website.Didnt get thru until 6pm so I'm out of luck.I was not a happy camper thursday but will get over it.Perhaps the limit should have been 1 per HH.Checked out the BST but since I did order 3 singles I have almost a thou. tied up till I know for sure.My plan is now to check out ebay for the reverse proof and the S minted ms coins. The ms 69 2006 sets are looking good to me right now.

Bingo. Why should coin dealers be the only ones allowed to make money on coins? Many collectors help finance their coin purchases by dealing in coins.

I'm just glad there is COINFACTS.... for those moments where I know I'm not going to learn anything on the "boards".
For instance, here's just a snippet : Ron Guth:
The Coinage Act of 1873 demonetized silver, leading to the demise of the silver dollar. Although Trade dollars were produced from 1873-1878, they were meant for circulation overseas and were not legal tender in America. In response to the sour economic condition that persisted through much of the 1870's, and as a sop to Western suppliers of silver, Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act in 1878. The Act required the U.S. government to purchase large quantities of silver and turn it into silver dollars. Thus, the dollar denomination was restored once again in the form of the Morgan dollar. Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, the Morgan dollar is one of the most popular of all American coins. It's large size, abundant supply, and pleasing appearance make it both affordable and desirable.

It wasn't my intention to appear smug or give an "I got mine" appearance. I'm just thrilled that I got my order in (hopefully). I have freely admitted that luck had a great deal to do with it. I did, however, spend the greater part of three hours in a frustrating attempt to get my order in. If I've ruffled some feathers, I apologize to all concerned.

I think that's a great idea. Is anyone lobbying their contacts at the Mint to persuade them to consider it?
They are getting ready to start shipping so they can get on with their next project and make this one history. >>
I was curious if there were a lot of people, I was going to do an "at cost" giveaway contest.
But it seems there are not a lot and even those who didn't seem to have connections to find one.
But I was thinking for the first time today, that the Mint won't likely lower the limit, but they could lower it to 1 per and not bother me a bit. This has gone from a small percentage flipping to widespread scalping. It really seems it has gone over the line into a scalping mess.
But I'm not going to complain to the Mint. I'll just let it go this time, and maybe forewarn them next time. Seeing this as a semi-key and comparing it to the 250k 20th ann. set just screamed under-minted @ 100k.
<< <i>Ok I do see one problem someone mentioned which is wrong. Never reload a page once its in motion, might look as if its not moving but for me it always does. >>
The only time to reload is if a "Time Out" pop-up window is displayed. I use the latest version of Firefox and it would just wait silently and patiently for the next page to load. Chrome kept timing out, as did IE.

The editor of CW, Beth Dreisher, agrees with you. She wrote an editorial to that effect in today's issue. She was also one of those that testified before the House subcommittee on monetary policy about 6 months ago, and offered some ideas about how the Mint could improve its bullion programs. Unfortunately, no one over there appears to be listening.

Many times in such cases the page data has been transmitted to the mint and the mint's database has been updated - you just don't know it because the return to your browser timed-out. I kept a second tab opened to show the status of my shopping cart. Even though the first page from which I placed the order never returned, my shopping cart was updated with 5 items. I then proceeded through the order completion steps (slowly for sure, but I did complete 5 orders this way)

It doesn't surprise me.
She is firmly against the friend&family network thing no matter what nor how much is on sale.
I only suggest to her that some people will never "get it" by the way of "figuring out to order from the mint themselves." It's not a sin, unethical, no immoral to sell to these people.
The mint could still cut people by IP addresses, but that would seem unfair to some on a company network or using hot spots. Imagine a coworker ordering before you, or going to a starbucks only to find another flipper there who may "take that ip address" for an order. It could be done, but it still would not prevent the F&F thing. What solution does she offer to combat it?
unfortunately, there seem to be too many capitalists capitalizing on this one. It has squeezed out some who knew, tried but still couldn't order or were waitlisted (and still might not get a set).
1. Mint to order for a week. 2. Some kind of lottery system.
Her biggest peeve, though, is the Mint restricting certain issues, (she calls them artificial rarities, I believe), thus by necessity creating incomplete sets for many collectors.

I agree. I know I won't get one of these since I got my order in way too late and I'm ok with that knowing there will be other issues like this one eventually. I just hope that this incident doesn't create a mint everything to demand and for a whole year policy. That would be boring and make coins like the modern stamp program.

Even when a some coins are offered for a year, they have extremely low mintages. The Jackie Robinson BU gold coin is one example but there are more in the modern commem series, which I take to include the 1st Spouse coins too.

neither would help with the F&F thing, but minting to order is not a bad idea to ensure enough are made and that ma negate the scalper effects and the necessity of a F&F network to wvwen simply get what you want (over, say, a 1 per HH limit). A lottery sure would not counteract the F&F network... that may even increase it as people try to get more lottery tickets in.
I don't know, but I wonder if they just underestimated demand on these instead of "restriced minting."
I would ask her if the Mint could only have made 100k due to time constraints if she would rather them be made or cancelled... even using the hindsight here.

I know it's more complicated than I made it but I think setting mintage limits makes an item more collectible than an item that was available for a while and nobody bought it for lack of interest. Or the other thing that makes value rise is when an item is pulled unexpectedly like I believe happened with the buffalo fractionals.

<< <i>Raufus,
As with previous flips, you have shown you handle things well.
Thanks very much Bochiman!!

Explain why I'm wrong, because I don't get it.
I know myself, and most people I know, want to buy real in hand coins...not ideas of coins. Especially in an instance like this where a lot is potentially up in the air until people have their boxes.
Obviously anything can happen, but once these are in hand it makes more sense that more solid deals will be going through.

fast forward to friday, the guy who works for me and my freind immeadiately flipped theres pre sale to Apmex, but I am holding onto mine at the present time. I will eventually sell 4 of my sets, but I am holding out as I beleive this is going to be a winner , at least in the near term.
three of my good customers who always order , were not able to obtain them this time. They were upset. One was dialing two phones and using the web with no luck.

So we called the wifes and said to stop trying via the web as we all got ours.

Wow, I sneezed and missed getting my sets by 3 seconds!

For instance, here's just a snippet :
Ron Guth:

<< <i>Allow me to make a stale comment about not being able to place my order until late in the afternoon. I am ticked. I'm especially ticked that some folks still have to game the system to order more sets than the stated HH limits. Frankly, the staleness of my comment is in the ears of the beholder.

I think that's a great idea. Is anyone lobbying their contacts at the Mint to persuade them to consider it?
I think you can put this topic to bed now.
It's not going to happen.

The editor of CW, Beth Dreisher, agrees with you. She wrote an editorial to that effect in today's issue. She was also
one of those that testified before the House subcommittee on monetary policy about 6 months ago, and offered
some ideas about how the Mint could improve its bullion programs.

She offered 2 solutions:
1. Mint to order for a week.
2. Some kind of lottery system.
Her biggest peeve, though, is the Mint restricting certain issues, (she calls them artificial rarities, I believe), thus by necessity creating incomplete sets for many collectors.

It does seem as though it would take a lot of the joy out of collecting if there were no modern rarities. What would be the point?

I agree. I know I won't get one of these since I got my order in way too late and I'm ok with that knowing there will be other issues like this one eventually. I just hope that this incident doesn't create a mint everything to demand and for a whole year policy. That would be boring and make coins like the modern stamp program.
I remember when I was 6 years old having a stamp collection back in the mid 40's. I don't even know what happened to it along the way.

Did you ever get an email confirmation? As Msmorrisine told me once and I have found to be true is if you get to the very last step before actually pressing place order a order number will be generated and it will show up in order history but will disappear about 2 hours later. The mint will have no record about this order as it wasn't paid for. Could this have happened to you?
