I hate to start another thread on the subject, but I find this one necessary....
who tried, but was unable to get an order in for the 25th Anniversary eagle set ???
I would like to redirect this to "those unable to order" or those who could order until like 6pm eastern or later.

After the order completed, I copied the set url into new browser windows and started over. I was able to do this to get 5 single orders in and it took me about 2 hours. I think being logged in and set to use quick checkout before 12 was the key. If you tried to navigate from the main page and login after 12:00 you had a lot more trouble and God help those trying to create a new account.
<< <i>derryb, what is your order status showing on your us mint account? Is it on hold with an expected shipping date of 11/11/12 along with backordered? I was about 8 minutes after you and I'm wondering if I'm in line to receive these or not. >>

I have no regrets and no beef with the Mint. It was the Mint lottery and I lost...as I usually do on lotterys. I know a lot of people here don't need the profit, but I'm sure there are some who got through and got sets for whom the free money is going to be extremely helpful in these tough times. Those are the folks I am happiest for. I would have liked to had the free money...but it won't change much for me. I hope my sets were snapped up by someone who really needed to catch a break. Congratulations to ALL you winners!

<< <i>I thought I was prepared for the onslaught, but in retrospect, I wasn't. I was non-stop with 2 phones and my laptop from noon until shortly after 5 pm before I got it. I just considered it my job that afternoon. Guess I didn't do a very good job that day. I'm wait listed. So are my two family who were trying to help me but weren't trying constantly all afternoon like I was.

I cannot understand why the US Mint does not contract with Amazon to handle their online sales. All the years of on line order frustration would end. If you use Amazon, or other major online retailer, when has it been so difficult to place a simple order?
To keep on topic I was shut out after 3 hours of checkout he**.
I have no beef in this. Didn't try to order anything and had no intention of doing so.

I was one of the (hopefully) lucky ones who got in after about 2 hours.
And as a retiree, the money will come in very handy.
I plan to keep one set for my collection and sell the other four, hopefully before Christmas.
Like you, I considered ordering those sets my "job" for the afternoon.

Can you give an example of when amazon ever handled a high demand, high intensity 4 hour sellout for a single product? Most of amazon's products are just like all the normal mint offerings that work fine. So maybe you know something in don't but until I know differently then I'd say there is no reason to believe amazon site wouldn't clog up just like the mint. --Jerry

Amazon probably handles in a couple of days what the mint handles in a year and it's probably more. Amazons site is unbreakable. The mints site is nothing compared to them. This wouldn't even make a dent in their server speed.
Amazon also sells digital products many of which are free and downloaded by the thousands. This takes bandwidth. Of course it is not realistic to say the mint should have a site like amazon since they are so huge, but amazon does rent out server space to companies like the New York Times. So if the mint rented this server space their site would be much better.
Good point, but with the Amazon global presence they handle more orders than the US Mint in a few days than the mint handles all year. for example last "Black Friday" certain time limited items did not slow down any order processing on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
The US Mint simply cannot make the server investment for two or three annual high volume/sales events. I believe they could contract server time with Amazon to handle these high demand items. It certainly would improve the service now offered to US Mint clients.
Hoard the keys.
Finally the Mint's sign in page refreshed and was able to fill the cart with 5 @ 1405 EST.
It was excactly what I expected.

who tried, but was unable to get an order in for the 25th Anniversary eagle set ??? >>
So long as you're asking....
I called hundreds of times and tried on the computer very frequently from noon until 17:00 when I got out of work, finally got through and ordered on my Droid at 17:50. I so should have just called out sick - can't believe that I didn't.
The three friends whom I told about these all were able to get 5 sets. One was able to order online at 12:05, another via the phone at 14:00 on the 10th or so try and the last on the computer at 15:30 after constantly trying.
My father and brother tried constantly from home, computer and phone, finally ordered at 17:30.
So, no coins for me or my family from these.
My saving grace is my buddy who got through on the phone at 14:00. He is selling me two sets for his cost as he would not have known about them but for me. I'm very grateful for this. He said that I can cherry pick the best coins from the five sets and buy two sets from him. I will help him sell the other three sets on FeeBay.
I might grade the keys, if they look like clear 70s. I have no intention of selling, so I might keep them raw as I always like OGP vs. slabs.
I so wish that my friend had just handed me the phone after he ordered. I'm sure that I could have just ordered my five and been done. Don't know whether they would have taken my order this way or not, but I don't see why not.
I'm just so ticked at this whole thing. The limit should have been 1/hh. They absolutely should change the limit to 1/hh now so that the 70 or so thousand people on the wait list who will get nothing can get a set. Perhaps they will.

Personally I'm happy I got my sets (hopefully) but the complaining here from those that couldn't get through is getting a bit stale.

Not holding my breath, just stating fact: perhaps they will. It is my no means a given that they won't. I think that it's 20% likely.
At least I have two sets coming. I feel very bad for those who have none despite that thousands will have five. The Mint can and should correct this.
I see that you've been on the forum for less than a month. Are you new here just to get info and to flip these sets? It's likely that you got much of your info from those who post regularly on this forum such as myself. Perhaps you should be a bit less sumg and a bit more grateful to the regular posters on this forum who likely aided in making you a ton of $ in flips on these.
The appearance of smug newbie flippers such as yourself when "hot" new issues appear, such as the pucks before these, is what gets stale very quickly.
The complaints are warranted. If they do change the limits I can't wait to read your posts complaining about it. I'll be so sad about your lost flipping opportunity. LOL.
The Mint totally screwed this up re: the HH limits. That's just a fact.
I work 7:00 to 4:00 central time and figured I would have no problem getting a set after work. I knew this issue could sell out in 6 hours (my original prediction) but really thought it would take 2 to 3 days.
I was reading the message boards (and posting) from work around Noon ET and didn't see anything I didn't expect. I went the gym for my normal 30 minute work-out at 1:00pm ET (Noon CT) and when I got back, still didn't see anything unusual.
I went ahead and started calling the mint then and re-dailed every 10 minutes or so from about 1:30 pm ET until 4:30 pm ET. I made at least 20 calls and got a busy signal every time. I loaded the Mint's webpage on my computer at work and tried several times to get through but couldn't.
Finally at about 4:30 pm ET I gave up and told my boss I was going home a little early to try there. By this time it was clear that we were close to a sell-out. I got home and got my first order through at 5:06 ET and my second through at 5:35 pm ET. Both are on hold. I hope to get the 1st order but don't expect to get the 2nd one.
Offering 5/household was a huge mistake by the mint. As many have said, it was a perfect storm. We'll see what happens now.......................
I received a confirmation email with confirmation number.
A couple hours later, my order was "suspended" on the order lookup.
I called the mint, they said, "We are getting a lot of complaints about that same issue, but, everything is fine with the order, there are a lot of problems with the webservers".
Today, that order no longer exists on the lookup site.
I called, they said, "yes, we are getting a lot of complaints about that same issue, we are looking into it!" and "it's a good sign that you have a confirmation number!"
I'll be darn surprised if I receive that order.
Mint MORE of the junk.
It's no better than Franklin Mint and it's time for people to find some coins with HISTORY!
My opinion only. People will order from the mint forever. As numismatic history, it will remain junk.
But so what?

on the question about Amazon. Not sure how the mint could really farm out the hot items to them. The mint's system works for the vast majority of their items. It is the "rare" flip item that kills the system.
What they could do, imho, is to temporarily increase their phone call center for the lines. That, imho, would likely give the most bang for the short term buck.
Amazon can handle things like this better because they have server farms (the mint is probably very localized and doesn't have near the server resources) in different locations. Google and Microsoft do the same.
That said, there are still times when their sites bog down...maybe just not as bad as the mint's
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I'm on hold and backordered with a ship date.

The Mint could rent rent the services of a "server farm" for those times it needs expanded coverage.
But the Mint appears almost totally clueless when it comes to predicting which releases would actually cause their servers to bog down.
Early on in the ATB puck series and the 1st Spouse series, the servers also were strained beyond the ability to provide decent service.
Doesn't seem like rocket science to be able to predict the surges, IMHO.
I would like to redirect this to "those unable to order" or those who could order until like 6pm eastern or later.

<< <i>My Wife bought 5 and already has them sold for a good profit . Some of you guys who apparently have "difficult" wives who don't fully support the hobby may have turned said wife onto the sitting and clicking away for an hour an a half to confirm a sale and make a good days pay. Might have a slightly different view of the hobby now as only being old guys who have cow licks and wear glasses. I mean cmon now >>
Stop looking through my monitor and describing me to the world!
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Hoard the keys.
Immediately after logging off the computer, I felt as if I'd neglected my g/f by not calling her right away. How dare I go straight to them coins ( that was my thinking). Then upon re-examining my conscience, I was glad to be in charge of my own credit card.
should have done the same here.

A $1200 to $1500 one off coin that is not part of a set is not the same as a 300 set with a few unique collector coins that are part of a popular hobby/series during an unprecedented run on PMs. The mint should know that and so should you.
Sitting on line to get stamped out limited editions of non circulating legal tender.
Exciting.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
spend all day on the internet trying to order? Are people still using 28 baud dialup?
seriously every order ive ever done since geesh going back to 97-98 has always been
in-and out, tops 15 mins, never a problem.
so Im at a loss when I hear "I was on the phone and internet all day"
doesnt make sense-if your using broadband ask for a refund, dialup well its your own fault.
but somethings deff wrong
