Kennedy Half Dollar Error?

So what do I have here? This Kennedy is definetely smaller than it should be, but I wanted to get input on whether this is a legit error.

Mintmark is a P, and I can't really read the date. I think I can just make out the top of the "1" as the first digit so I am pretty sure it is at least pre-2000. My best guess is 1980.
I compared it to a SBA, and it seems to be the same size, but it is not perfectly round. You might be able to see a slight oblong 'bump' right at "In" on the obverse.
This is about the best I could do on the pics, and I don't have a proper scale to weigh the coin.

I'd appreciate some opinions--Thanks.

Did someone grind it down to use is as a dollar coin in a vending machine? A lot of work to save a half dollar but some people have more time than sense.

I would be willing to bet you that is one hundred percent post mint damage. That is a Kennedy Half Dollar struck on a Kennedy planchet and then "worked on" to be made to appear as a genuine mint error, which it is not.

  • Well, I was hoping someone would cite metal flows and other technical aspects that I wouldn't recognize and pronouce this is legit error, but I suspected this was post-mint. The amount of wear, including the black guck on the reverse, indicated to me that this had seen some circulation (I found it at the bank). An oddity like this just wouldn't stay in circluation long enough to get that amount of wear. So I figured it probably wasn't an oddity for most of its life and someone did some alterations later on.

But, I'm still open to the idea that it is a rare error...

I'll cite something technical for you:

    thickness.

it's half dollar thickness, isn't it?

I was going to say the clad layers on the edge are way to neat in their layering to be nothing but PMD.

    Cut Diown, Polished, etc.

The edge of the coin is not
correct for an off metal coin.

When I was in grade school (a very long time ago) I saw this kid take a penny, work it on the concrete sidewalk until it was the size and thickness of a dime. He then put it in a laundry room change machine and got 2 nickels image

Not to sound repetitive but it definitely looks like it was hit with a grinder.
