But seems someone Likes them A lot more than I do! WOW!

I had a Capital Plastics type set frame, once. 'Bout that size. Back in the '90s. One of our local dealers in Asheville, NC was old Mary Sellers. She was a sweet grandmotherly type who I guess had taken the coin shop over when her husband passed on. (She herself is gone, now, RIP).

Anyway, this was one of those shops that had been there since the 1950s or so, and hadn't been cleaned since. You could find produce and vegetables like pumpkins sitting on top of the display cases. Or those Avon bottles. Or stacks of newspaper, or used Christmas cards from a generation ago. A mounted largemouth bass wearing a set of human false teeth hung on the wall. There were old dead typewriters everywhere. Mrs. Sellers was a bit of a hoarder.

But in with the clutter were coins. Plenty of 'em, and some of 'em nice. And coin supplies. The place looked like a rummage sale because it basically was. You could rummage up some good bargains, though.

I found that Capital Plastics frame and asked Mrs. Sellers how much it was. It had a pricetag on it but that was probably the original 1960s price- something like three bucks. For one of those big frames, mind you, with dozens of ports in it.

She looked at me like I was stupid. I mean, it said three dollars on the pricetag, so three dollars it was.

Cool - I have those holders. I tried using it once but the problem is some of the holes are too small

I love those type of places lordm Used to be one in south jersey like that until the guy retired about 10 years ago. I only wish I knew then what I know now. I am sure I missed plenty

It's not so much some of the holes are too small but rather some of your coins are too big.

Those holders are great for storing items other than coins. I have a set of Beatles autographs mounted in a Capital Plastics quarter holder. I think they are great as photos can be added, the item can be safely handled, and most of the Capital holders fit into safety deposit boxes.

OK, that might not be numismatic, but it's just too cool.

Color me a Beatlemaniac. Almost, anyway.

Those prices don't seem out of line to me at all. They are obsolete like new holders and very desirable to the right person who collects Capital holders. I myself have many of my nicer pieces in Capital holders and feel they are one of the nicest coin holders ever produced.

I mean look at the ridiculous prices people are paying for those silly looking older PCGS doily holders, and they're not even hard to find, yet if you see some of the prices they go for you'd think they were actually rare and desirable or something image For many years after they were discontinued those doliy type holders carried no premium whatsoever and no one gave them a second thought..........then one day you hear about a collector or two paying a huge premium for one, and a whole group of others latch on and create a market for them (a doily paper insert craze) figuring they must be something special.

Are the holes tapered? Small from one side but the coin will fit from the other side? Seems I had removed some coins from a Capital holder once and when I tried to put them back in, it was from the wrong side and I couldnt figure out how the coins grew or the hole shrank.....just had to turn it over.

A far worse problem is when the holes are too big. You can custom fit them with their adjustment tool or with sandpaper.

When I was using Capital Plastic holders to house and protect my best coins (pre slab days in the late 1970s and early '80s, I had custom holders made with the holes a bit small. Then I would custome fit the holder to the coin.

• Somebody got a good deal on those holders ! I tried to get that set of holders on e-bay about 3 years ago , but got outbid just north of $ 200.
I searched for over 2 years before I saw another set at a local show for $ 300 . Needless to say, I bought them .
Those are VERY hard to find . They make for a much nicer presentation than a dansco album for sure.

Wow, WS, those are some pretty pennies! image

I remember when I worked for the other coin shop in Asheville (Bill Wright's shop- no denture-wearing largemouth bass in there). One day somebody brought in a set of Indian cents in a CP holder like that... All UNCs, including the keys. Only a few were RB and the rest were full RD coins. That was a sight to behold.

• I bought one of those holders about 10 years ago for $16. But the other one wasn't available, and sometimes
half the set is more useless than nothing at all. Also, mine is white, and the black ones have a much more
striking look, especially with the silver coins.

Those things are near impossible to find. I had my eye on those two, and I would have paid about $30 each,
but I honestly expected them to fetch $60 each. The final numbers blew my mind.

I sure could use a nice holder for Mercury Dimes and another for Buffalo Nickels, but I'm not willing to pay
the "new" price of about $80-90 each.

I have several stored away, I have the IHC set, the Barber Half set, SLQs and some gold sets (holders that is). I had a VF set of IHCs in that frame years ago but the others I never used. I wouldn't want to crack out 73 barber halves just so they looked nice in a holder...but it would be cool.

Nothing better for displaying a well-matched set, as some of the previous posts prove. My prized Buffalo collection resides in one, as well as my silver proof pre-64 Washies and Roosevelts. My Jeffersons are in an old style Capitol holder with the cardboard insert and some of the coins have toned beautifully.

SOO NICE!!!
• I was actually the one who bought those 2 holders. I really didnt want to pay that much but I literally could not find those anywhere else, i looked and looked and looked before putting in a bid that high. Plus the price was worth making a really nice type set look even better. I think it will allow me to enjoy my coins even more which is the point of the hobby for me and is an enjoyment for me that is priceless.

No kisses, but he did add "Beatles". He never was a prodigious writer ("Don't Pass Me By" "Octopuss's Garden") and I guess it carried over into his signing.

Actually, I don't recall a lot of examples where he did add kisses.....the "star" he always added below his name must have sufficed.

kazuma78 Congratulations on winning two great type set holders.I don't think you paid too much for these if you really want to use them. Just surprised me I guess that more then one bidder was willing to go that high. I don't think some of the posters realize what coins these holders hold. These hold some high dollar coins. I think you will enjoy your collection more than if they were in slabs. Please kept us updated with some pictures with the coins in them!
PS if they had been Blue in color you would have had to pay a lot more.image

Long story here. All my collections were in blue whitman folders. I had a fellow worker who transferred to my area and we discovered he was also a collector. He did mostly type material and travelled to all the shows back in the 70's. Well, he got in to collecting when his wife died and he collected a lot of insurance money. Around 1976, he had a girlfriend and got engaged. He lived in a small apartment in DC and did not even own a car. His new bride to be told he to sell all those coins, - she wanted a house in the suburbs. Since I had a car and knew of 6 area coin shops, he asked if I would drive him around to sell the coins. I was BLOWN away when he showed me those full type boards with UNC and proof coins ONLY. In 1976, Dealers were writing him $35,000 checks for some of his coins. Eventually he sold all he had.

So one day, he comes to work with a box full of capital holders and tells me I can have them for helping him out. Even a circulated set of cents look fantastic in a capital holder IMHO. Like others, I still have most of what he gave me with partial sets like Mercs, IHC, etc. But I never could see myself EVER completing the two full type set boards and sold them on Ebay around 1999. I still have a green partial type board mostly filled with Junk, but one day....

• On capitals website it says you can have custom holders made but with a regular capital set that size it is already about 105 so I assumed having one custom made would be much more expensive. Unfortunately I have alot of really nice slabbed type coins and i think it would be unwise for me to crack them out to put them in the capital holder so now im on the hunt for some nice unc raw type pieces. I already have some that im just itching to put in those holders. Im in college so i dont have the extra cash that i use to have to spend on coins so im perfectly content with $100-$400 pieces to fill in each slot with some lightly circulated specimens where the uncs get insane. Unfortunately my great aunt has many of the gold type set capital holders full of rare gold coins that my great grandfather collected (i.e. bechtler gold and lots of Charolette and Dahlonega pieces) but she wants to donate them to a research institute or college so no luck for me of ever getting those. Oh well, looks like i just have to build my own collection from scratch. image
• Also, about 5 to 10 years ago when I was just starting college and in high school i can remember seeing alot more nice type coins around for reasonable prices..... what happened to it all it seems to have dried up....

Have you ever tried holding one of those large holders up to your eye?

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

TextHave you ever tried holding one of those large holders up to your eye?

I am guessing in order to look the coin over?? yes, its a hassle especially with a loupe and you have to turn the board all upside down, backwards, etc LOL. But, it can be done, I even photograph single coins when I need to.

I thought this was going to be a thread about coins rotating in the holders, particularly some of the coins in a multi-coin holder, and/or the difficulty of opening and closing the multi-coin holders to add or change coins, or the tendancy of the plastic screws to strip or break, or the difficulty of keeping the plastic scratch/hair/lint/crumb-free.

Actually, all the above happen with slabs except for the plastic screws and as long as you do not over-tighten them, your good to go. But there is one other small advantage to these boards >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPACE !!!!!!!
I have 4 thin boxes compared to the 16 @#$%^&*()_Blue boxes needed for the same set and that my friend is why we like Capital boards to begin with image
