Do other people collect like this?

When I was a kid I collected types...mostly buffalo nickels, indian cents, morgans, etc.
Just recently started collecting again, and my approach is to get a single, nice example of each type of coin I like.
It seems like most people around here are collecting type sets...just curious if anyone else is taking my approach.

When I started I tried to get one example of each MAJOR type. By that I mean for the Seated Liberty coinage I got on half dime, dime, twenty cent piece, quarter, half dollar and silver dollar. After had done that I decided to go back and go for more of the minor types. I kept going until I had it all, but that took over 30 years.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • I guess what I mean more specifically is I like bust halves, so I'll get one I really like...I like buffalos, so I'll get one really nice ms66, etc. I guess just lost that desire to have multiple (especially ugly multiples) of the same coin. (when I say multiples, I mean different dates, but the same coin). For me, I want a few really nice coins to look at (I'm on a budget). haha
Just curious if people think like this, or if the general desire is to try and get all the dates in a type you like.

I think what your saying is you want to put together a highest grade you can afford Type Set.
That is what I eventually want to do.image

I guess that is true image
And basically just buy the coins that I fall in love with, instead of trying to find a super expensive key date to complete a set that I can only find in vg image

Yes, that is what I am trying to do but I still have a few problems.

    1) I still get starry eyed when I see a pretty coin and buy itimage
    2) I need to do a highest grade set in many areas such as
    A) US type
    B) US Hard Times
    B) US Merchant
    C) Russian
    D)Hungarian

So I think it going to take quite sometime to complete, and I am a very impatient girlimage

Type sets are a great way to approach collecting. You get the most "design bang" for your buck. Many people who like different designs also collect type examples of the "classic" commemorative halves.

Most importantly ... collect what YOU like, not what others tell you to collect. image

There are no wrong ways to collect. Simply collect what you like, in the grades that you like, and in the manner with which you feel comfortable. There are no rigid rules to adhere to regarding coin collecting, and there is no 'authority' to whom you must report. It is a hobby, an avocation, intended to be enjoyed by all participants. Collecting in the manner you describe certainly sounds reasonable to me, but then again, who am I to say.

What you are collecting is a Like Set. The composition of a Like Set is subjective and will vary greatly from collector to collector. It is probably the purest form of building a collection, as it is totally independent of external guidelines.
  • Sounds like a good idea to me. Why buy coins with designs you dont like? Pretty dumb if you ask me. I collect Classic Commems but only the designs I like. There are many I wouldnt touch with a ten foot pole.

I like doubling my money, so a single example just won't work. image

Building a type set seems to be a matter of funds rather than difficulty in finding coins. Building a complete set of Buffaloes, Walkers, Barbers etc requires a lot more work regardless of your fund situation. Some coins are just hard to find. It is a lot easier to find a nice Barber half dollar than to find a nice 1896-O Barber half. I like nice type sets (I have one) but it wasn't the challenge or fun it took to complete a series.

  • Ya, I agree there is fun in the search, but I'm a graphic designer, and ultimately, the joy comes in looking at the design...and having a nice copy of it image
I don't know...anything could change. I had at least a 10 year gap where I "hated" collecting coins...and in the past couple months I have the fever back after buying some investment gold...so anything is posible image

Thanks for all the input everyone!

I have done the series thing... and enjoy them. However, at this time, acquisitions are mainly 'what I like'... Could be any type coin if it strikes my fancy. I just enjoy collecting. Cheers, RickO
