Sticks to a magnet....

....so what do you think? an altered 1943 steelie with the last date digit tooled? 4th digit of date is undersize (stem of 3rd "4" and tip of 4th "4" should almost touch)

I vote altered 43. The second 4 does not look right to me.

The date should look the same as the one that appears on a normal 1944 cent. It doesn't so this piece is an altered 1943 steel cent.

BTW this picture sets a record for me. This is the cheapest coin I've even posted. It came from the Lincoln cent folder I recieved on Christmas day, 1959 from my uncle. I was ten years old. So this is among the first coins I ever collected.

Altered? I would say so. But I'll also say this, they did a good job. WOW! If they would have got this # "4" in the right place it would be tough to call. Interesting, and scary at the same time....Joe

You also need to note that the "4" is too small. I'd call it a half way decent job, not a "good job."

Let's see, the 1 isn't high enough, the 9 isn't closed enough, the first 4 doesn't look right and the second 4 is way too small...

    I vote Chinese fake.

I think that the original 3 was completely removed and a donor 4 (that was poorly removed from the donor coin) was glued to this coin, altering it. Tried putting the coin in Acetone yet?

Looks like a "from scratch" fake, not an altered genuine 1943.
