Even the seller's 5 oz Engelhard went for over $60/oz. That just seems like a crazy premium even if you are a collector.

Indeed.
When some old poured Engelhard 4 ounce bars appear the real fun begins.

<< <i>that's stupid.... bring that to almost 100% of coin shops and you'll get melt value for it >>
At which point the LCS will put the bar up on eBay and quintuple its investment.

<< <i>Note to self: Cherrypick any 7 ounce Englehards I might find at the B&Ms and coinshows. >>
I wouldn't count on a cherry pick but I guess anything is possible. I've seen the "ask" higher then +$225 per ounce on 4's and 7's. MJ

I was watching that sellers auctions go off last night and I just couldn't believe it. You're right, even the 5 oz'er went for $60+/oz. I was like wtf is going on?

Unfortunately there is no Official Red Book to help gauge tough Engelhard items. You're on your own trying to assess scarcity and value. Just adding a few more dedicated bar collectors could make tough Engelhard items that much tougher.
I picked up this 3 oz Engelhard within the last month off eBay. I paid much more than I expected because someone else bid strong. Did I pay too much? I'm still not sure. What I do know is it is the only 3 oz Engelhard I have ever seen with the bull horns. Of course someone with a horde of them might start listing them on eBay tomorrow and I'll feel foolish.

<< <i>First time I've seen one of these ....another 7 oz (Maple Leaf) .. not my auction.
7 oz Maple Leaf bar >>
I have no idea of the manufacturer for that bar. It does not look like anything I've ever encountered from JM or Engelhard.
IMO it does not look especially old.
