1837 Bust Dime

Hi,

I was just curious what you think of my 1837 bust dime (JR-4, R.1). I feel its slightly undergraded from a technical perspective as it has luster from the rims to the stars, outlining the bust, and similar on the reverse. The strike is decent as all the centers of the stars are visible but a bit weak around the eye. It definitely has wear, but IMHO not as much as the grade on the label would indicate. As far as eye appeal is concerned, it has nice target album toning consisting primarily of blue/sea green, violet, and fiery orange centers on both sides.

What do you think? I will post the grade later. Thanks for looking!

    AU-50.

There's quite a bit of flat-spot weak on the high points to bring it down to a 50, IMO.
I'm sure there's a bit more luster not being picked up from the photo, but I love the toning on that coin.

Either way, it's a keeper! image

Stone hit it right on the head (of course) image. I will defer to his expertise in this series however, as nice as Todd's pics are they don't capture the full Luster that's present on this coin in hand. This combined with the nice eye appeal is the reason why I felt it should go AU-53. But then again, what do I know? image

While I agree with the grade (obviously image ), I agree with this statement from Realone.

A while back I purchased an ICG-53 1837 Dime which then upgraded to 55 at PCGS. My coin shows a lot stronger
detail than the example you posted. Therefore, I tiered back the grade of your coin accordingly.

oh my, what a beautiful coin! image

I have to concur with realone's comment and stone's second ... nicest I have seen too, and I would love to own it

in fact that is probably the nicest looking AU50 Bust Dime, anywhere, period

I would grade it AU-55, but given the fact that the market value between AU-50 and 55 does not amount to much, I see no reason to re-submit it. The color and the luster under the color should command a premium price.

Your coin in a new AU53 or even AU55 holder would likely sell for considerably less than it would command in the current old AU50 slab.

The fact that the coin is in a 2.0 holder indicates to me that it has been put away for a very long time and not likely to have been submitted for a regrade. If it were an R3 or higher scarcity for the variety, it would be a great candidate for regrade. As an R1, there is no monetary incentive to have it regraded. The coin should command a premium well over the market value of the indicated grade on its appearance alone. Nice find!

    Wowzers.

Dunno 'bout the grade... 50? But to heck with technical grade. That one's got firecracker eye appeal bursting in the sky.

(Edit- I posted the reply before scrolling down and seeing the grade. Cool. I'm on the money.)

judging from similar coins in my collection, I think it looks like an AU53. However, grade is only important for widgets, IMO. That coin has eye appeal that makes discussion of grade immaterial. Great coin, a keeper for sure. Guarantee you could darn near "name your price" if you ever chose to sell it and wouldn't even have to post the grade other than to say it is in an older PCGS holder

Very pretty Bustie. I agree with the PCGS grade of AU50.

Ok, so maybe it is not undergraded. But the consensus appears to be its at least high end for the grade. Good to know as it didn't come cheap image.

    Thanks for all the comments!
