It appears to have Mint State sharpness with almost mark free surfaces, BUT the surfaces appear to have been improperly or excessively dipped. They are now cloudy with impaired luster.

It depends on the price, but personally I won't touch it.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Thanks,

All the photos on this auction site are sub standard and make hard to get a good read, for me anyway.

A coin like that offered raw has GOT to have a problem that keeps it from slabbing. Most likely, it has hairlines from wiping or polishing, which don't show up in the pics. Anyone with basic knowledge of coin grading can see the 1883-s Morgan is a big-dollar coin in BU grades, and it's worth sending in to PCGS if it might make MS64 or 65. The person responsible for selling coins through this auction site surely has that basic knowledge of coin values, so you figure it out. image

The cheek looks thumbed in the photo.

I sensed at least 2 red flags, as mentioned earlier.
    1. If it is legit, why isn't it already slabbed?
    2. It is not a seized item like others in the auction. It is from a private collection
which leads me to believe the seller is trying to unload.

I am not considering a bid on this coin, but wanted to see if others agreed
with my initial take on the item.

    thanks.
  • I would guess au-58 and polished.
