Wow, talk about flashbacks! I was at the Vegas show where the 1958 Franklin was up for auction, it was the talk of the show. We were refreshing the price during our social event and I think it went up 30k by the time we were done!
The true monster Morgan toners are in strong hands now, but the prices paid for them were far higher than years back. Nice, attractively toned coins in various series have had prices rising over time. Neutral or blah toned coins haven't done squat. The 1904-O and even the 1885-O dollars pictured above would fetch little if any premium over the assigned grade.
Marking up toners vs ordinary pieces of the issue can vary. It could be 100 to 500 pct. For a really super toner pricing it 4x price guide is not uncommon. IMO it’s more of a qualitative decision, situation. The bottom line is that buyer who will pay the money out there.
It boils down to how rare is it pop wise with other coins of the issue and how badly somebody wants it. Again that magic whale retail buyer.
An analogy is one would pay more for super bowl tickets on the 50 yard line vs end zone (much more). Yes agree no 2 monster toners not alike but that does not mean they can’t bring big money. A team recruits 2 five star RB one is a speedster the other a wrecking ball. Different but both have explosive potential. It would be idiotic to assume otherwise.
As with any coin, or anything at an auction for that matter, all it takes is 2 bidders with endless money to turn something even relatively obscure into a valuable item. Sometimes you just toss out the book. There is no price guide for toned coins, as far as I know. Appearance is everything. I am not a fan of toned coins and thus will not pay more for toned coins, however, there are those who love toners and will pay the higher premiums. I am not saying that they are not beautiful coins, the 1958 Franklyn above is a very beautiful coin. It is just not a coin for me.
I have old mint sets with rainbow toning around the outer edge they look fantastic! I always believe a rainbow toning on an old Morgan sorry about
fuzzy photo but a true rainbow is worth at least double if in a rare year. The coin at that point is going to stand out and if a high grade even better but it’s eye appeal

It depends on the coin and the demand for it. About 20 years ago, I picked up a softly toned apricot rainbow iridescent business strike 1899 Liberty Nickel in PC 6 for no premium at all. You see very few of these coins.
To command a large premium, said coin must turn heads and make people salivate like Pavlov's dogs when they see it. A coin that comes to mind was an 1892 P Barber Half or Quarter I saw a good 15 years ago in MS 66. Dealer was asking 5X over a white coin for it, and I'm sure it sold quickly.
If you're bidding on these coins, you'd better know how to tell if it's the real deal, or if it's "market acceptable."
"Vou invadir o Nordeste, "Seu cabra da peste, "Sou Mangueira......."
I think lightly toned coins with great original luster are terrific coins to collect. So are white coins with that fresh blazing undipped look. But those white coins are few and far between. So I think most white coins are doctored in the sense they are dipped multiple times. So I would rather have a light toned pretty coin than all these fake white coins people collect that are dipped out trash.

10 YEAR OLD THREAD BUMP - ALERT!
I was doing a search on color premium and saw this thread.
I think, if anything, the color premium multiplier has increased on colorful Morgans. Do you agree?
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
My sense is the premiums are trending up from a few years ago, but not as high as they were in the mid to late 00s.
PCGS Trends value for the 1885-O $1 AU58 CAC $52. Color value not included. I would pay that price any day of the week and twice on Tuesday!

Mostly look for varieties or high grade coins.
If toners come without a premium, I will buy them.
That said, I have a great appreciation for how hard attractive NT coins are to locate.
So a 3x to 5x premium is what I try to get out of a toner.

1958 Linda Gail “Beyond Moon Money!” Franklin Half Dollar
This Linda Gail Franklin sold for a large dollar amount but at 10x Price Guide, it's much less a percentage increase than some lower priced toners.
PCGS Price Guide: $13,000
Legend Price Realized: $129,500
It’s funny to think that the anti toner brigade has been reminding us almost daily for a decade about how they are in the anti toner brigade.
3,650 times seems a bit light even

I was looking at a Battle Creek monster toner a couple days ago. Think it was around $1500... about 20x
No different to me than a DMPL, DCAM, variety, etc... have started placing them in a R value scale. The Battle Creek coin was certainly R7

If you’re trying to show what a $6000 toner looks like, that picture’s not making your point.

That's a nice 29 P. That said, this type of toning is not uncommon for a 38 D of the series.

I buy white coins that look like they popped out of a roll, mostly..
