Incredible Gift From Great-Grandpa and Grandma

Well mkman123 has been kind enough to contact me in PM's since I joined up and we've been talking for a couple days now. I told him my story about how I got into collecting and he told me I should post pictures of what was passed down to me here as you guys love these stories. So mkman123 this is for you! image

Well I'm a young gun as far as coin collect goes at 24. I've always been interested in coins and have been collecting wheat pennies for as long as I can remember. Any time I'd see them I'd save them. I'd always save the "drummer head" quarters when I'd find them when I was little. My middle name is Thomas and I'm named after my great-grandfather whom was an avid coin collector. He passed away when I was very young he left his collection to my grandmother. She gave away some of it to each of her four children and kept another chunk of it for herself. My favorite thing to do since I was 6 or 7 was look at the coins with her. I've always appreciated the history, beauty and value in numismatics.

Two weeks ago, the day before my 24th birthday, I was having dinner with my grandmother and she asked if I would like to look at the coins. Of course I told her and I went to get them from the closet. As we were looking through them, rediscovering them, (trips to grandma's have grown less frequent as I've gotten married, picked up three dogs, and work a lot of hours each week.) Finally out of the blue she told me I could take all of them home with me. I was awed and very appreciative. It was my great-grandfather's legacy and I'm honored to continue what he had started. While there's no 1909-S VDB pennies or 1921-D Mercury Dimes I love each and every coin as if they were. They're all very special to me and I hope I have a son or daughter one day with an equal passion for coins and collecting that I do so they might carry the torch as it were.

Nice story. I am curious, what does the "P.P." mean on the 2x2 holders?

Thanks guys! It's nice to share these with others whom appreciate them. Other family and friends sigh and roll their eyes when I try to show them my collection. It gets disheartening.

I have shared similar enjoyment going through my grandparents circulated silver hoard (now my mothers). Barber, standing liberty, old Indian heads, walkers etc...

Although there were two GSA dollars in the collection, that didn't excite me as much as the circulated coins. Personally That collection is worth a lot more to me together than broken up as trade pieces (maybe I could part with the wheat pennies!)

I agree with you wholeheartedly image I don't plan on selling or trading any of this besides maybe, like you said, some of the wheats. He had a couple albums of them.

That's a great story and they are beautiful coins.

I'm told that 1982 George Washington piece isn't really solid silver.

That's exactly why you were bestowed with the collection, you have the love and the passion and your grandmother clearly saw this.

As your collection grows I'm sure these pieces will always be the most valued by you.

I personally wouldnt sell or trade any of them. The sentimental value far outweighs anything else.

Depends if the value of coins outweighs the value of sentiment and different people put different weights on such things. Besides you could keep 99% of the sentimental value by keeping a couple of the pop pop coins and selling the rest, what if he doesn't collect mint package stuff and silver culls so why would he keep it. Never understood why people how get all wishy washy over other wise random stuff and I bet if someone special gave you a check, you would cash it instead of going "it's the paper that is special". Awesome! I'm sure your grandfather is happy that the
collection went to you versus others in the family that would
have sold in a heartbeat. Keep adding to it.

    You're right.... I don't see a 1909S-VDB cent or 1921D dime anywhere in those pix!image

Congrats on the great gift, and for looking on coin collecting the same way I do - - as a passion and legacy to pass down to the next generations!

Great story on your collection. No matter what you do, unless it is some life saving surgery for someone, don't sell that stuff. The value you place on it will always be much greater than anyone else will.

Not sure what a pedigree slab is but I really think I want to send the Eagles out to PCGS (since I was threatened with death for considering NGC and ANACS) and work on building a whole set. He passed away in 89 so he only had 86/87/88

Think of the value these coins will have to your great-grandchildren.

Then, they'll have a tremendously cool history.
