Thursday At Long Beach
Got there @ 10:30 and spent 5 hours. Things I noticed, in no particular order, were:
1) More women attendees
2) More vacant tables than before (many East Coast dealers apparently didn't make the show)
3) Many more tables selling currency
Retail traffic appeared to be light, but not painfully so. More than ever before, I noticed that most dealers appeared to bring material which they could move quickly. Ie., even more gold, Morgans and Walkers than usual. The NGC table was busy.
Highlights were:
a) A very nice group of high end late date Large Cents and Unc. Half Cents @ coppercoins.com
b) Van Simmons' 1818 Bust Quarter in PC MS 65, which was simply gorgeous
C) Colonial Coin Union's 1901 Proof Set
There were a good 15 or 20 attractive for the grade Barber Halves in MS 65 and MS 66, including an 03 O and and 1895 O.
There were six or eight attractive for the grade Trade $s in PC4 or better.
High end Buffalo nickels in pretty much all dates were available.
There were more high end 2 Cent Pieces than are usually available at this show.
Bust $s were available (Large and Small Eagle) through XF 40. I saw a few graded higher than that, but those didn't float my boat.
Plenty of RD & RB IHCs, early Lincolns, and high end Flyers were available.
Another highlight was a properly graded 1849 Half Cent in 3 BN, with a pleasing patina. This is an almost impossible coin to find coin
I did not see as many nice SLQs as usual. High end old copper was not on the bourse.
I didn't closely examine many coins. Only 4 this time. Based on this limited sample, I saw more emphasis than ever before being placed on a coin's eye appeal, and less emphasis being placed on a coin's surfaces.
One coin with a lot of flash for the grade imo was overgraded, as three eye-catching contact marks on Miss Liberty's face were apparently ignored.
Another one was an original coin with attractive eye appeal, but imo, far too many little tick marks on the reverse to merit the grade on the holder.
A third was attractive for the grade, had a few dots indicating dip residue, but a noticeable carbon spot below the chin if the viewer was paying attention.
I bought my first coin of the year, a very flashy 05 Liberty Nickel in PC 6 with a sticker. from Ben @ Sarasota Coin. I was on the fence about it. I'd rate it a 7, maybe a 7.5 on a scale of 1 to 10, due to two small tick marks on Miss Liberty's face, and another one parallel to the V. My mentor liked it, so I bought it. I'm usually okay with one small tick mark on the obverse and one on the reverse in this grade. Now, the only type coin in this series I don't have is the 1911.
I saw Brandon Kelley, Mark Feld, Charmy, Christine Monk, and visited with Heritage Rep, Jim Stoutjestyk and Truthteller.
I also picked up four demonetized Brasilian currency notes and one from Perú from David Cieniewicz
My entertainment for the day took place on my Metro-Rail ride to and from Long Beach, which is always an "interesting, multi-cultural experience." One rider near me wore a shirt from a liquor store whose name I cannot print in this forum.
Another highlight was when the transit police asked riders for their fare stubs. One traffic officer grabbed a young woman who tried to run away from the train. Upon getting a ticket for fare jumping, the kid across from me called a friend on his cell phone to tell him about it. This would have made for an interesting CD. Lots of 'ho's, mo-fo's, N words and similar material.

I should have gone... if I didn't find any coins, I may have still been able to find a future ex-wife!
<< <i>Thanks for the report, I really have to get back to Long Beach soon, and the obligatory trip to Canters on Fairfax for the amazing Corned Beef !! >>
Wow, that brought back memories. I miss Canters--haven't been there in 25 years.

CJ: 'No one!' [Ain't no angels in the coin biz]
for your early report. Well done indeed!

I give away money. I collect money.

<< <i>PM me on who had the 49 half cent and don't tell anybody else!!!
If you buy it and it becomes a 58, PM Me!!!
<< <i>One of the best attractions at LB was being able to view the complete 1915 Pan-Expo coin set with it's original box & case. All those coins from the 50 cent to the $50 round & octagonal were all NGC with grades ranging from MS65 to 67. Steve at Rare Coin Wholesalers was kool enough to pull all those pieces out of the case for me to see. Very tempting set to purchase. Just wished they were all in PCGS tho...
Well --they might very well have been recently
