Home Precious Metals

Main Focus, Collectibles or PM's

I consider myself a collector who also dabbles in precious metals. Lately I have sold a lot of my common coins and have been focusing more on the pm side of the hobby. I now find that my pm's have over taken my collector coins in both numbers and value. I like the idea that I can take a roll of Eagles or a 10 oz. bar and know pretty much what it will bring if I take it to my coin shop, with collector coins I usually get "It's in the wrong holder, or I don't get much call for these" etc. The collector in me still likes to put together sets. I have a couple of complete Silver Eagle sets, and a Franklin set. I don't worry about the premium on these because I can put them together for not much more than spot. I find it satisfies the collector in me. Anyone else here burned out with collector type stuff and making the switch to precious metals only.

My collector coins are usually lower grade PM type coins. Such as Au58-MS62 Saints and Liberties. I tend to buy these when the premium over melt is low and sell them when the premium over melt is high.

I have found that starting this way I am now tending to move into the higher end coins of these types; MS63,64,65. The premiums on these are very low. Every one wants hunks of metal and these beautiful coins are left sitting on the shelves.

I never went for the Modern 70's but I did buy some Modern 69's in both gold and silver. My silver coins developed milk spots and I sold them for melt. I don't think I will ever buy Modern silver again. My gold coins it seemed that they went for melt and no one cared if they were in a holder or not. So as far as Moderns go, I guess I am in agreement with you.

I collected PM's for years (back in the '90's) when they were cheap - compared to now. I am not collecting them at this time. Cheers, RickO

I am a PM stacker with a modest gold coin collection. Since Jan 2009 I have heavily favored PMs over registry set coins.
  • I have often wondered why some modern silver Eagles get milk spots and some don't?. I have a 2004-W proof silver eagle in a holder and no spots have shown up on it yet. The white stains (or "milk spots") result from the planchet (flan) cleaning and preparation process

Big reason why I like 90% silver, I can feel like I am collecting them and try to make complete dansco albums out of them BUT they have the precious metals in them which is what I'm after as well.

Guess my answer would be PM's for now..

I've completed several Darkside type sets in Dansco albums... but once completed, I loose interest in 'em (ha)

Also started several Gold type sets, just put them on the back burner for now, to stack more Silver...

Eventually plan on cashing in the PM's & filling the holes in my Gold type sets...

    I agree with you.

I never collected coins. I have been "collecting" PM's for 1 1/2 years now. It's more investment / insurance, but it does satisfy the thrill of the hunt and the collectible hunger that I have.

I am by far more of a coin collector, PM's are a very small part of what I have. Even when I buy PM's it is almost always in the form of e. 20th C. World gold coins.

I collect both..in times of silver weakness I revert back to coins and let the silver/gold just sit

Both coins and PM's. Don't forget that PM's can be collectible when you consider all the neat silver/gold bars from the many different producers in various weights, shapes, designs, styles, etc.

I collect and stack, leaning more towards stacking these days. There's also quite a few coins that can be had for tiny premiums over spot now with metal prices rising.

My main focus is now on PMs. Though, I am trying to buy rare or scarce items.
I still have some coins and won't give up on my Dansco 7070 but collecting gold coins is what suits me better.

Collector in me is why I found CU. PM's are different play more of savings/investment.

I do like gold coins as collectable but disagree with way they follow spot prices.

Started out back in the hobby c.2002 as pure collector of 20th century US, ...stumbled my way into Barber halves with a lot numismatic premium (midgraders) as a specialist...stumbled literally into a nasty injury, so had to sell the Barbers off, whilst learning more about our economic woes... which pushed me over here to the PM forum (from the former GS Econ megathread).

It is fun to 'stack' silver coinage in folders like common date and lower grade roosies, frankies, washers, wlh's -- that is, before the price of silver took care of that as a 'cheap' chase for fun.

So, I think you can have it both ways... others have listed mint products with premiums (collectibles), although I haven't done that. How about this for a hybrid of both worlds?
