Apmex selling prices

A while ago, I received an email from APMEX promoting their mobile website and offering free shipping on the first order you place through it.
Well, the offer was expiring yesterday night and I wanted to use their promo (since I always complain about their high shipping charges).
I have dealt several times with Apmex and I have always had positive experiences: fast shipping, well packed merchandise and pretty good prices (though, since I usually pay with CC, I don't get the best from them).
Yesterday, I ended up buying one 2.5g gold bar and one silver Philharmonic. I paid $211 with credit card and saved $12.95 in shipping.
What surprised me this time (along with the fact that they don't accept AmEx), is the fact that their prices are not competitive at all.

Few examples (check or wire/CC):

1/10 oz AGE gold = $188/$194
1g Pamp gold bar = $75/$77
2.5g Pamp gold bar = $150.70/$155
1 oz silver Philharmonic = $55/$56.7

I found al these items in at least 2 other websites with lower prices (and lower shipping charges). Not to mention eBay.

They are big and can run their business as they wish, I just wanted to share my thoughts with you guys.

Do you buy from them?

Yes...I buy from them, but only those items that are competitive priced. They occasionally have a fairly good sale on some of their bullion product..FYI...eBay bullion prices are normally higher than APMEX.

I've found that Tulving typically has far better prices than APMEX as well as free shipping.

I refer some people to Apmex as I can't be bothered with metals business most of the time. Apmex is a reliable source of precious metals.

If they are a substantive customer I'll handle the business myself. If they are a customer who buys metals consistently and are a customer that I like and who deserves more I'll refer them to my own metals person who I've been dealing with for 20+ years. But for the masses I'll send them to Apmex. I would never refer anyone to the other one mentioned. No way.

    Compare prices, then purchase.

on many things, there prices are much too high that with some searching you can find a better price. However on some things, they are pretty good. Just like derryb said, compare and purchase.

I've not used them just because they have were higher on items I was looking to purchase at the time, and now most of the bullion I buy is high grade European gold which I have not seen them carrying. I would not hesitate to use them on the things they are competitive on. I do use 123 and their other site at 1234567.com , but you also have to call them as they often have a lot of PCGS graded gold not listed on the sites.

PM if you don't already know who they are and want PCGS/NGC graded 19th/20th C. European gold coins. No, I don't have any financial interest or kick-back plan with them.

Similar to mrearlygold, I would never even consider sending money to the other place mentioned unless I had the bullion in hand. I have a long memory and had some friends that (who must have believed in the tooth fairy) never got made whole. I do agree everyone deserves a second chance (and I have not heard of any problems with them recently), just not with my money. Anyway, I don't buy the type or quantities he requires so it really doesn't matter.

All my buying with apmex have been good experiences BUT at current prices I just cant do it.For example any silver ounce coin ASE S, philharmonic, maple leafs, etc are selling tonight for $52 or $53 while the spot price is $45-$46.Too big of a spread IMHO.

You should live in Oklahoma, then you get to pay 9% on top of that in state taxes. They aren't very good for us living in Oklahoma with the high shipping and CC charges.

The only thing I have bought from APMEX was my first hockey puck set, but I was very happy with the way they honored their sell price on one set after the market went stupid. They even honored the quantity discount on shipping even though the quantity had to be cut back to one.
