What happened to the 2009 ultra high relief $20 to make the price zoom upwards all of a sudden?

I remembered in late 2009 when no one wanted them.

So I put away one MS-69 and one MS-70 that I had graded at PCGS (from my US Mint order) . They were so sad and unwanted by anyone so I decided to adopt them and put them away rather than look for a new home for them.

Now, they seem like they were discovered on the TV show Dancing with the Stars or something like that. image

What HAPPENED???

This was not an "all of a sudden" increase. It's been going on since they were first released.

This has never been true. Somene has always wanted them. Collectors who bought them from the mint mostly put them in their collections where they will remain for a very long time.

No, but I remember when they became a tough sale, or difficult to sell at then current levels. Had four in the store at one time, couldnt give em away. Not anymore. I beleive the change in grading PL coins as well as the public knowledge of melting , and gold price rise all contributed to the recent price explosion.
