  • Definitely grandchildren. Especially once they're past the terrible 2's.... before that it's a toss-up some days. At least it's legal to lock my coins away!

    Ditto.

If I did have any grandchildren it would depend upon what kind of peole they were or became. I had a cousin who ruined his life with drugs, drug dealing and hell raising. His daddy left him with enough of an income to take care of himself for the rest of his life, yet he was dealing drugs ... in Texas. How stupid is that? Back in the 1970s a Texas court would send you to jail for life if they caught you with one joint. One day he got drunk and drove off a mountain. I don't have time for people like that and don't want them around me.

I am fortunate enough to be blessed with nine grandchildren, spread out amongst my five children. As much as I love my coins, many of which have been with me for thirty years, there is really no contest - I love my grandchildren more. Three of my grandsons (ages 10, 9, and 8) are developing an interest in coin collecting, and there is no greater thrill for me than spending time with them, teaching them about this wonderful hobby. It is a comfort to me to know that the family name will be continued for yet another generation, and who knows: perhaps the half dime reference collection will be continued for another generation, too.

I'm gonna get slammed, but I think about my coins much more often than my grandchildren. I participate in my hobby daily while I may see or talk to the grandkids two or three times a month.

That doesn't mean that my coin collection means more to me, but that wasn't the question.

I have two granddaughters ages 4 and 2 mos., one each from my two daughters. Since they live nearby and my wife "retired" to take care of our granddaughters while my daughters go to work, I see my granddaughters (as well as my daughters) very nearly every day of the week and sometimes on the weekends. They are all almost always on my mind. I don't look at my coins anywhere near daily and they are not always on my mind.
