Fakes on Fleabay making me angry

Everybody knows about this mess, and it has been going on for quite a while. But in the past I would see these things and they wouldn't have a bid on them. Now they got all kinds of collector & non-collector coins, and they're getting lotsa bids!

For example, seller hunanawai has sold lots of common date Morgan fakes in the last few hours (10 AM EST 4/15) with lots of bids. Obviously people are buying them to resell as silver dollars at outdoor flea markets and the like. He also sold things like 1926-S cents - with lots of bids.

What ever happened to the efforts to stamp out these vile koch-roaches?

While I don't disagree that counterfeits are a big problem, your assumption neglects the possibility that there are many uneducated people buying coins on eBay who simply don't know the difference. Just because the seller's actions are bad doesn't imply that the buyer's intentions are, too.

Honestly? They wore me out. The more we got rid of, the more showed up. I rarely take the time to even report them these days.......image

I used to try and warn people before the User IDs were masked. Earned a couple of suspensions for "auction interference." I don't know why the ANA and PNG can't shame eBay into stopping this. They sell more coins --- $4 billion ay year -- than any action house -- but allowing all these fakes is turning so many people off of coins forever. Even if you don't buy or sell there, it is hugely harming the coin business and hobby.

Beth Deisher. the "Coin World" editor, has tried for several years to shame eBay into doing something about its counterfeit problem, but the people who run eBay have deaf ears when it comes to the subject of counterfeit coins.

That can't be true, since the seller has them LISTED as copies. No, the sales are a testament to the extent people (flea market sellers, etc) will go to to earn a crooked buck.

    yup.

hard to do much about fake coins listedd as fakes with the word copy in the picture. And it's hard to prove the word was photoshopped on.

unfortunately, it's hard to do something about this particular one.

wow, some day people may actually have to LEARN for themselves to identify the fakes....crazy idea i know. but if those people were willing to learn BEFORE they buy, they may not get duped. i have no sympathy for anyone who is still not aware of chinese counterfeits, there is simply no excuse.

Ebay reported gross sales volume of $1.3 billion in coins and stamps for 2010

    http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/ebay/0x0x160230/D11C904B-4EEA-4821-9C42-D0228F676BAD/eBay_Metrics_Q42007.pdf

They have refigured their numbers to account for the loss of the Ebay live
sales, where they used to partner with
Heritage and Stacks and other specific coin auctioneers. They also are no
longer counting sales that were later
cancelled after completion (like $500,000 coins that exist only as a stolen
    image)

I looked at eBay's annual report. They have made multimillion
    settlements with various companies
for allowing fakes to be sold on eBay, but they specifically mention that
they have no intention of changing
any of their policies unless they are REQUIRED to do so by the law or a
lawsuit (as is the policy of most companies)

I hope PCGS takes the hint image

is this a continuation of the thread from the other day in regards to the ungraded 26-s linc?

if so here is my ebay q/a:

    Dear numiscent,

is there a reason why you would sell such a nice peiece as you describe it without having it graded by one of the tpg's?

    Hi there,

That's a great question. I stopped dealing with grading services a few years ago. Also, for this particular coin I can't see how anyone could grade it shy of 65 RD, so that leaves the grading services with their own motives in a tough situation. Only one 26-S has been graded 65 RD by PCGS, and I am confident that they want to make sure it stays that way. Have you seen that coin, compared to some of the PCGS MS64 RDs? It is clearly inferior to some of them. I honestly don't feel like sending it in 10 times in hopes that one time it will grade out. If someone has that in mind, I wish them luck.

    Thanks,

    Tom

Send me the link to the sale.

Paypal has begun cooperating and is starting to shutdown some of the guys selling Chinese counterfeits.

This could be a major breakthrough!!

Didn't eBay at one point have a separate classification of "copies/repro's" that all such coins were supposed to be listed under? I wouldn't mind that as much if they all went into one spot I could ignore....

Just last night, I was following another Forum member's link to a Morgan $ when I expanded to see all the "ending soon" Morgan listings. Wasn't hard to tell the fakes, as every ad said "COPY" in the tagline, and all were selling for $3.99 with free S&H from someone in China stating it would take 6-10 weeks to deliver...image
