A thread for those wanting to know what a "dip gone bad" looks like.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
This coin is currently running at TT and I think it illustrates well what a coin would look like when it is improperly rinsed and rushed through on a submission. Please don't rag on PCGS for grading this coin, I'm sure it looked pristine when submitted and appeared to all who viewed it as a PR69DCAM with fully frosted devices and watery mirrors. Don't rag on TT either, they just list what collectors send them(though I do take exception to the description!!).

Most classic coins I've seen with a bad dip have the telltale small spots of residue on the coin.

Is it salvable by cracking it out and re-dipping with a proper rinse?

I cannot speak for the powers that be, But I do think it can be fixed if done right by the powers that be.

its a nice coin, stuff like that doesnt show for awhile, when it does its ugly.

I had a 1979 type 2 lock pr70dcam lincoln, which had a big carbon doodie on his chin.
no one wanted to touch it, so I put it in ms70 full strength overnight, carbon dooodie on chin
totally gone, coin was immaculate, but in my wisdom I rinsed with water big time, dryed with air and
everything and held it because I did not want to pass something on that was unfit. within 2 weeks
it deleveloped a bright red darker streak across the reverse memorial. was sad, real sad, other wise
a beautiful coin. I gave it to M dixon in a box of stuff I passed on, not sure what happened to it.

man without the carbon doodie, was a lock type 2 pr70dcam, it didnt get better than that, and was the days when
NGC did not conserve stuff, but i doubt they wouldve tryed image

    Mybe you should!

Judging from the slab generation the Telerade coin was graded between 1998 and mid-2001 so the residue has has plenty of time to form.

I also think it's fully saveable with a spot review. But given the age of the residue and grading, its difficult to be certain.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Al, correct... very poorly rinsed, dipped, coin. Not sure if it can be saved, depends on what the residues are... they have had ample time to do surface damage. Such a shame. Cheers, RickO
