ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,946 ✭✭✭✭✭
You know...sleepy saturday afternoons.

Rain

Youre looking through your old worn dogeared Redbook...

Whats the ONE that you fawned, oogled, dreamt of, imagined owning..holding....worshiping?

Aw Come on, you know you had one.

MINE??

My first real dream coin was either a small eagle gold coin ($5 or $10) or a 1796 / 1797 bust half.

Once we started the seated dollar set it shifted to a certain 1873-CC and the 1870-S.

It may sound crazy, but when this one came out and was on the cover of coin newspapers it captured my imagination more than anything else did. I finally got this one in 2009:

I didn't have one but I do know my brother's dream coin.

Back in the 1970's, he passed on buying an 1822 US dime.

It was about a VG grade coin and it was selling for $50.00, at the time.

He still regrets buying it to this day as it's still missing in his collection and is still one of his 'dream' coins.

My dream was finding a 1909-S VDB in circulation. This was back in the early 1960's so
it was not completely out of the question. I never found one, and I have never owned one.

It was the 1852 $50 Assay... I had a very life-like replica of that coin and wanted to own one when I grew up. When I grow up, I'll let you know if I buy one! image

I wanted a nice 3-Legged Buffalo nickel. I always thought that was a really cool piece. In 1988 at age 20 I finally bought a full horn example for $110. I still have it. I sent it in to PCGS a couple years ago so it would be slabbed and fit in my box with the other keepers and it came back XF-45. Guess my eyes were OK back then LOL. That's THE one coin for me.

I fell in love with an MS 1796 Bust Quarter with concentric blue toning on the obverse.
Just the most beautiful coin I've seen for the series, IMO!

    Sorry, no pics image

Definitely the S VDB, 22 no D, and 55 DD. I can remember being 6 or 7 years old and searching through my grandfather's wheats for them. Of course if I had found one we would have scrubbed it with baking soda and a toothbrush as was his policy. image

Yep, same here the 1909S VDB...couldn't afford it then, and can't afford it now in the grade that I want...it's super high grade or nothing so I've got nothing. LOL

A Bar Cent. I always looked through the RedBook and just loved the simple design. Too bad I didn't buy one back then!

When I was kid I thought that Indian cents were the bee’s knees and the cat’s pajamas. Given that, my dream coins were the 1877 Indian cent followed by the 1909-S.

Latter on when I was getting into gold type coins, the Three Dollar Gold Piece topped my list for a while. I was lucky. The first gold coin I ever owned was an 1854 Type II gold dollar. It was only in VF with a weak date, but I had one early on, and did not have “the hots” for another one.

As a kid collecting coins from pocket change I hoped for something I thought I might actually find: the s-vdb. Never did. But I've since owned 6 or 8.

The dream coin I wanted and knew I'd never get was a '43 bronze Lincoln.

The coin I've wanted since I started collecting in the late 60's is a 3-Legged Buffalo. Unfortunately all these decades later and I've still never owned one and it's still one of my dream coins.

Same for me. Back then, circulation was the only source of coins.

The 1955 Double Die cent was also sought, but never found.image

That is seriously cool. Elizabeth looks like she's turning into a zombie.

I don't think there was ONE coin that I really dreamed about when I was little. But to name a few, I was a lincoln cent collector, so the 1909-S VDB was up there. I also wanted a trade dollar--date didn't matter. To date, I have never owned either....

As previously mentioned(several times in fact) the 1909 S VDB---searched throughout the late 50's into the 60's but never found one in change. I found many, many 1909's but none with the S VDB. I finally bought one in 1972 when I got out of the military and finally completed the collection sans the 22 and of course no 55ddo.
What a find that would have been.

Kid in the early 70's with blue Whitmans: any key date Lincoln cent, but esp the 09sVDB. Never owned one. As a grown kid, the 22 no D seems cool, never owned one. Did get all the others though... then sold...

1916-D Mec...it was the only Merc I did not have at the ripe old age of 8....now I have quite a few.
I was also quite fascinated with the Chain Cent...still am and do not have one still....working on other crazy priorities right now I guess.

  • My dream coin would have been something old and different. Large Cent, I think, or maybe Half Cent.

My aunt had a coffee can full of old Lincolns, including a 1909-S (no VDB). That was the most valuable
penny I'd ever seen. Years later, I told her I'd love to have that coin and the rest of her can. She said
the neighbor kids had broken into her house and stolen the coffee can full of pennies. image
