It's customary, when making disparaging comments about a great coin and accusing a TPG of holdering doctored material, to have a least a bit of evidence to back up one's statement. Like I said, 3 auction appearances and I was there for two of them and have the catalog for the third. Nothing there - not even close to your statement. So you either flat out made it up in a mean spirited [libelous?] manner or you are grossly mistaken but too far gone to recognize it.

Anyone - do me a favor, pick up the phone and call Brandon...he'll tell you exactly what I have said. His number is 972-746-9193. (It wouldn't be too persuasive for me to do it, now would it?)

Furthermore, I don't presume to know much about electrical contracting.....you too might not know too much about law and might want to bone up on words like "libelous".

And, I'm not mean spirited....I just pointed out the coin's flaws. You can't handle that? I mean, you didn't make the flaws, did you? So, loosen up!

No, I'm not going to do your work for you. I have some laundry and brush cleaning to do. Do yourself a favor and post the EVIDENCE that you stated. Post a quote from the auction catalog stating that the rims are filed. You insinuated that the new buyer was uninformed and stupid and that the coin was 'improved' - so put up or shut up!

I think we need to ban the word "libel" on this forum... IMO, it's used too often... let's start using nefarious. image

I can't believe Adrian picked up on libel and posted it before I did... if I hadn't been away from this forum for 18 hours, it wouldn't have taken me 20 minutes to read this thread and I would have posted my comment before Adrian.

I don't have to be right - I only have to make one person think that I *might* be right.

<< <i>And, I'm not mean spirited....I just pointed out the coin's flaws. You can't handle that? I mean, you didn't make the flaws, did you? So, loosen up! >>

Yes, you mistakenly pointed out the coin's supposed flaws, insinuated that the buyer made a mistake and basically accused PCGS of holdering a doctored coin. All in a nice and pleasant manner. /eyeroll

Having read thru this thread I find myself more interested in electrical contracting than law.

Exactly..........and not to mention how many times the Mona Lisa as well as many other famous multi-million dollar works of art have been heavily conserved over the years. A chain cent in Good-4 is a nice item, a high grade circ is a very nice item, and a high grade MS chain cent (and a specimen to boot) is an exceptional item IMO. Many of the great rarities in US coinage can be picked apart if one is inclined to do so. For example take a look at the famous 1870-S $3.00 gold which is the only known specimen and has graffiti carved in the fields. Take a look at the 1822 $5.00 gold (3 known, 2 in private hands) and they are all circulated with their fair share of dings and gouges, etc. Look at the Dexter 1804 dollar which has a small "D" stamped into the reverse. Yet, these are all still great and highly desirable US rarities as I see it.

Hey its a nice coin. We can sit here all day long and an pick apart great rarities with flaws. Scratch, planchet flaw, whatever you want to call it, but lets face it, thats why its a 65 and not a 67 or 68. Whats a SP68RD Chain Cent worth anyway? Probably a million or more than TDN's coin. I appreciate the coin for what it is, a special Chain Cent. There are two ways to view a 65. You can discuss forever what a great Gem a 65 is and how much better it is than the average unc, or you can just fire away at all the hits and marks that causes the coin to grade less than 70. Half full, half empty. I think the focus should be on the number one thing that makes this coin awesome even before it hits the grading scale: Specimen Strike.

Its been said around here a lot that collectors focus wayyy to much on surface abrasions than orginality and mint bloom.

I like it when people criticize coins, its how I learn. But the way Anaconda discusses the coin, it sounds like venom, and then it starts taking an entire diff direction, who's right, who's wrong, its my right to.....blah blah.

There aren't any. The Jay Parrino coins are as good they get. He brought them to Long Beach in the mid '90's, and I got to see the Wreath SP68RED and "the coin". I have never seen any chain with mint red on it.

Just had the 1793 Chain in SP67 and the 1793 in SP68RD in my hand this summer. Incredible coins!
This SP65 has a different fabric to it, as does the SP67. Both great coins!

  • specialistspecialist Posts: 956 ✭✭✭✭✭

FYI: for those who do not believe our coin market is international: that coin is being enjoyed by a collector in the Far East who we built and incredible 1793 copper set for. Kinda shocked us too.

    The coin is friggen amazing

So back to that awsome coin.

Does anyone know why it only say's AMERI? There seems to be room for the rest of the word.

It's a SP65 ... the cert verification needs to be fixed. It has lovely semi prooflike mirrors combined with swirling luster. The picture shows the details, but not the life of the coin. The flaw through OF is on the planchet.

This deal was mine, so noone but me ever got a shot at the coin. I've already turned down several offers at a significant profit. But these are the kinds of coins that I want to collect - not for sale!!!

How did Laura sneak in a favorable market report here ?
I know 8 years hold time is a long time, but collectors of old held coins for decades. This one went to the Far East. Is that near Costa Rica ?

Anyway, I'd have taken the profit over the coin, too. Why not ?

To those of you who were concerned with OF on the reverse: YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!

I'm glad to hear that it's an as-made planchet defect...but even if it was a staple scratch or a knife carving, it would not detract one bit from the beauty of this awesome coin!

    Congrats TDN!

Have to agree. It would be a shame for a coin like that to otherwise end up in a details holder due to a staple scratch.
