OK? to summarize, buyer had a problem with the grade. PSA has a "Grade Guarantee" where if they deem the grade is incorrect, they put it in the correct holder and compensate you the difference. Big Chief was deemed incorrectly graded as a '6'. (Easy to see since he was missing his entire ear with paper loss). Michael Jordan was deemed to be correctly graded as an '8', and no change was given. Original buyer didn't like it as an '8'. There are ALWAYS gonna be swings within a grade. That is why you see some cards sell for premiums over other cards in the same grade. People sometimes scratch their head (me included), as to why one card will sell for $175 in a PSA 8, and the exact same card will sell for $240 another time. Those "high-end" and "low-end" swings could be the cause of that.....

PS - that spot could be the one thing keeping the card out of an '8.5' or '9' holder. If that is the case, then the buyer got a fantastic bargain!

And any other problem kept it from being a 10

    this
  • This card has gotten way too much fuss... seems to me all these threads and requests for apologies or points proven could've been averted if the return was just accepted from the start and there never was a drama to begin with.

Reljac,..that is what happened....the buyer got refunded. However, according to PSA, the buyer got what he paid for to begin with. He was sold a PSA 8, and received a PSA 8. The case should have been closed right then and there. Where do you draw the line? If you accept returns for every PSA graded card, then you will only get people wanting to buy cards in case they can get bumps and improved their lot monetarily. And sometimes that improvement can amount to hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

I see you point, and agree that it's a potential problem, but here's my final take:

If you were selling slabbed cards in a B&M shop, the buyer would get to closely inspect an item and make a final determination that they wanted it. You wouldn't make them pay before you took the card out of the glass counter case. Once they walk out the door - it's all theirs with no returns.

But in the online selling world, you HAVE to allow for a reasonable return window to give the buyer a chance (his first chance, after all) the closely inspect the item. And, in this case, to have a FIRST chance to inspect the back. For these reasons, I don't see any solid defense against allowing returns within a reasonable window.

IIRC, that's what the original thread was all about - should you even allow a return? The consensus was that you were in the wrong for not willingly and immediately accepting a return. All this other stuff, including whether the card was ultimately graded correctly, is immaterial to the original point - upon inspection, the buyer was dissatisfied and wanted to return the item.
