I'd say 35-40 for a grade. It's hard to say about the surfaces from the pics. It looks like a nice mark free example. I would guess the surfaces are original and nice in hand.
As far as I can tell from the pics provided, I'd say it looks Ok, and probably grades around XF, with some of the typical strike issues that these coins always have (weakness on the stars, etc).
<< <i>It looks to be a pleasing example except for the black spot by the I in AMERICA, but that's a relatively minor nitpick. Overall, I like it. >>
This is my assessment, too. And although I don't really *like* that spot, I'd much rather have strictly original surfaces with that spot than messed-with surfaces to remove it.
I as well would do an acetone soak. The coin looks original and very nice for the grade in my view. Strong even strike on both sides and no damage or serious distractions at all. Perfect rims and color as well. Great type coin. I would say xf40-45 grade wise in my view.
It is well struck for the type, and falls into the EF-45 range so far as sharpness goes. My only reservation is the spot on top of "I" in "AMERICA." If that is black corrosion, it will lower the grade to the net graded VF range.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

You should send that ugly thing to me for disposal.
J/K of course. I like it, maybe cleaned at one point, but I think it looks good.
Taken out of circulation in early-mid 1870's and been sitting in a coffee tin in great-grandma's cupboard with a bunch of other change ever since.

What effect, if any, would an acetone bath have on the surfaces?
I agree with the suggestions regarding an acetone soak.
I'd grade it an XF40, but perhaps net to eye appeal 35 for the spot.
I think of Lou (IGWT) every time someone posts a shield nickel. Wish he were still with us.
Nothing happening as far as variety features.
