I was in Cleveland when this went on - kept trying to track down the currency to no avail at the time.

    - and it doesnt even seem like they graded the notes??

this is proof that paper isnt a good investment, if the guy would have hid the same face value in silver or gold...well some pawn shop could have paid them 5x face value.

Huh? It was not his, it was the homeowners. Its not a "good deed" it is the law. Had he hid it from her he should go to prison, how would he know she did not know about it, which is irrelevant anyway?

That is precisely why cache hunters never reveal their finds. Cheers, RickO
  • "But how to share? She offered 10 percent. He wanted 40 percent. From there things went sour."

"He's often asked why he didn't keep his mouth shut and pocket the money. He simply answers that he wasn't raised that way."

I guess he was raised to demand 40%, but to take all would be wrong.

    Okie dokie, then.

Why is this called “a wall of greed?” During the Great Depression hoarding cash was not a totally dumb move. The banks had no FDIC insurance, and if the bank went belly up, you lost your deposits. That happened to my father who put the cash awards he won at his high school graduation in the bank. He lost it all. Given the gold surrender order, the owner might not have had the option of putting gold behind the wall at the time he did it.

Hoarding cash was one of the great problems during the Great Depression. People were reluctant to spend or invest the money they had because the economic prospects were so bleak. One of the goals of the Roosevelt administration was to get people to take out their from under the mattress and spend or invest it.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I believe they are referring to those that found it recently and how their greed caused them to end up with very little of it in the end.

Yes, it is not at all the hoarding aspect, but in regards to the woman who had the hoard and how she acted. The Cleveland magazine did a very good article on it.

The heirs of the rightful owner are probably now going to step up and intervene in the lawsuit.

Edited: the article posted above says that's exactly what happened, and the heirs got over 86%.

I remember reading that a few years ago.

The article states it happened in 2008.

"“Those who sacrifice liberty for security/safety deserve neither.“(Benjamin Franklin)

"I only golf on days that end in 'Y'" (DE59)
  • If I were the owner of the home, I would have said to the contractor after learning cash was found behind my ways, "That is fantastic! You get half, I get half. Deal?" If I were the contractor, I would have said to the owner of the home, "Great news! I found a bundles of old cash in your walls. You get half, I get half. Deal?"

As a third party, and had I witnesssed this and been the judge I would have given her 75% and him 25%. Or, I would have given her 70%, him 20% and then tell them I keep the remaining 10% if they wanted me to keep it a secret. imageimage
