Has anyone here ever seen or hear of a counterfeit or adulterated smaller silver bar under 100 oz?

Someone here started a thread about authenticating 10 oz silver bars. I never gave it much thought but is there a concern with the authenticity of these bars? I read about a few of the 100 oz bars being drilled out and the silver being replaced with lead but my understanding is that this was not very prevalent.

I have a 10 oz credit suisse bar that only weighs 9.85 toz...Somewhere in its history it may have been shaved by .15oz ...Interesting bar.

Can you see where it was shaved? Can you provide a pic? Doesn't seem like it would be worth the effort especially considering they damaged a bar.

  • I see alot of those goofy "plated" 1 ounce bars on ebay. Theres gotta be some kind of market, weither its scamming people or just the pretty pics on them for it to even be worth the time to make them. I would think anyway.

Most of the colorized chinese bars out there are counterfeit - silver plated copper. As I found out a couple of months ago. I have seen fake 100 50 and 20 gram bars. Lots of fake rounds around but they are pretty easy to spot even without a scale. Unlike the bars which were very good.

Watch out for some of those bars from the late-'80's.

Some will have things like .999% silver and that's an exaggeration probably since
they're probably much lower than 1.000% silver. There are several items like this
but none are very often encountered since they were caught fairly early. Watch
out for double eagle series with presidents on them. Usually you can tell because
they just don't "feel" right but they can be surprisingly deceptive even when they're
    supposed to be gold.

Never seen any bad ten ounce bars, just some of those large size currency reproductions that were silver-plated copper.

Did these currency reproduction bars come with a certificate of authenticity?

No, but I can print one up for you image

Mine came as a part of a bulk "deal" on our very own BST a year or two ago.

OPA---Does that bar have the correct weight and the correct ring when you balance it on your finger tip and tap it with a pencil? The waviness may be from damage---silver bars got tossed around and were treated like they were only so much bullion which they are.

Yes, Gecko made me aware of the potential shaving after I first posted it about 1 to 1 1/2 years ago. It weighs 9.85 toz & has the correct ring...To heavy for me to "balance it" on my finger. I have no doubt it's a credit suisse .9999 silver bar.
