thanks Razor, i knew this wasn't a mirage.....so it appears the assumed fake, example #1 in last year's thread is the one currently being offered by him.

    what a gawdawful mess.
  • Here's a summary of the 68 Ryan PSA 9's using cert # 02103800:
The current 68 Ryan PSA 9 listing as of 2/25/11
    image
    Sold on 12/25/10:
    image
    Sold on 4/5/09 Memory Lane:
    image
    Sold on 8/13/08:
    image
    Sold on 12/5/07:
    image
This image is for one that I believe was pulled off of ebay:
    image
I believe the 8/13/08 card is the same as the 4/5/09 card. As to whether any of them are real, I don't have a clue at this point.
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all "right-thinking" people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

  • I'm impressed. It's amazing how the people on this board find one small detail and 3 pages later, things have blown the heck up. When you all hit the nail on the head like this case it's great! When you guys miss, it's pretty funny too!

We need to do everything we can in order to protect the integrity of PSA graded cards, because if PSA loses their reputation, then in turn we lose value on our PSA graded cards. (See GAI)

Screw this guy for trying to sell garbage housed in a PSA slab.

I only have one eBay account, as do most people. I believe some others have separate accounts to keep their buying and selling separate.

  • I wanted to provide an idea to anyone who needs law enforcement help to police our hobby / industry. I have read some posts that this type of fraud may be too small for the FBI to investigate and it is difficult sometimes to get to the right officer in the local precinct. So, be advised that this type of case may be prosecuted with vigor by the United States Postal Inspection Service. Once the suspect sends a card through the mail - it is mail fraud and he can be prosecuted. The USPIS has wide ranging law enforcement powers (they are 1811s just like FBI special agents) and usually handles cases that are too small for the FBI. Could be right up our ally.

True, but the authenticity of a PSA slab is not that hard to verify, despite it not being tamper proof.

There's a much greater danger if some internal scandal should emerge out of Newport Beach.

Back in the day when you could still pay for Ebay items with checks, I once sent a seller a check for $40 for unsigned Super Bowl photos. Never got my photos, never got my money back and the seller was booted from Ebay. I then filed a mail fraud charge with the USPS-----I never heard a thing and gave up.
On another note, the responses by "allhopeislost" makes me wonder how this guy ever made it through school. His rants sound like they were written by a first grader...

PSA survived the WIWAG scandal. These minor case cracking/fraudulent flip ebay/craigslist auctions won't even raise an eyebrow in the collecting community.

True, but I wish they would at least send cease and desist letters or something similar to the worst offenders. yeah, you can tell if a slab has been altered once you get it, but think of how many buyers don't know to check this.

His choice in metal bands suck big time, his use of the word "true" metal is also pretty much crap as his choices for metal bands are the exact opposite of true metal.

That makes me like him even less then before, if possible.

I also think he was too lazy to spell out Ryan's and Koosman's names like they are actually spelled out on the real PSA flip.

  • Wow, I missed the photos of his previous purchases. It's funny though, he was better off not trimming the card and not writing back to Muggyman.

    Dear muggyman,

Hey there muggyman, You can post this as well on collector's corner as I have seen all your trash talking crap about me, as a fellow good member of ebay has sent me to your "bashing" site were all of you are talking trash about me. You people have NO idea who I am or what I have for a collection,or were I buy cards, what auctions I go to NOTHING! But all you trash talkers do is sit there and accuse me of doing illegal stuff! How dare you!
I never even thought to get a black piece of paper and cover the top of my scanner so you can get what you want, but I am sure you would still trash talk me! I will GLADLY do so "WITH BOTH" Gretzky cards side by side and my 2 Ryan rookie cards so you can post it on your bash site so all you people will stop saying I am breaking or cracking and or cutting anything! Again I can not believe the nerve of all you and saying that you are or even did report me for something that is "NOT" happening which I think YOU said you did! I have NOTHING to hide or any type of illegal BS what so ever that you people claim I am doing! I have a family and would "NEVER" put them in danger so just STOP already! Oh, yes my name is Gregg but I go by my high school nikname Drew so you can all stop thinking I am useing a allias name to be sneaky! Again you people are out of control and these are all assumptions and nonsense as you know nothing! Why would you try to get someone in trouble for something that IS NOT going on? I am a family man with kids a wife and a 50+ hour manager postion at a Organic Food Distibuter and earn my works pay and pay my taxes like a true American does! I cant believe you people! STOP talking all the trash talk about me as its VERY child like and unprofessional without getting your fact's straight or even knowing anything! Go target the true scammers on the internet not me a small time collector just trying to get our 1st home! I am done with this and ask kindly that leave me,my auctions,my account and my family alone! STOP!

The card is currently over $2,000....someone is about to take a bath!
  • I was assured that the proper authorities are on it, they indicated that his "file" has already been escalated.

If he sells it, accepts paypal payment, and ships it; he will be served a search warrant.

    Stay tuned...
  • And now he has been tipped off, so he can prepare for the warrant search!

Doubt this is true. Probably a bluff to get him to take it off. If you really wanted to get crooks like this off ebay (and had knowledge
of this possible search warrant), then not saying anything and letting him get caught would be the more reasonable thing to do.

However, I'm guessing he's reading this thread. If he wasn't, then broadcasting that information would not lead me to think that.

I don't have any concept of the mind set of a crook but is it possible this guy bought the card to re sell and does not know it is a bad card?

I am not defending the guy just not sure a guy with this many transactions is guarenteed to be a crook.

The card itself looks drastically over graded at a minimum so clearly there is cause for suspicion.

if you check his completed auctions, you'll find the smoking gun. i believe someone already pointed this out earlier in the thread, but just to review, there appears to be a BCCG 9 Gretz ended Feb 20 with no bids and the card looks quite similar.

Kinda surprised the auction is still up. Has anyone else contacted eBay through the "report this item" link in the listing?

Not sure exactly what they would outline on that search warrant either, if nothing happens until after he ships the card.

  • The 68 Ryan PSA 9 is now up to $2,500. Here's a side-by-side comparison of the current auction and the card sold in 2007. While the labels look the same, the card itself is different. The most obvious variance is the width of the right hand border:

So it's the same flip; possibly the same holder, and a switcheroo.
Then resubmit the original 9 and hopefully get a 9 again. Sounds familar.
