$4 Special Popped. What a Joke!

Just got my grades back for the $4 special. What a joke. Did they even look at the cards??? I can't say I got the "grader of death" because they were actually somewhat more lenient that normal on tough issues like '71T and '62T. What's really annoying is all the 8s on the mid 70s commons. I think I'm finished with grading them. They aren't worth much even in 9 holders, so if they aren't going to grade them consistently, they aren't worth enough to resubmit them to get them in the proper holders. Several of the star cards were cracked out of 8 holders as they were high end. Many downgraded to 7 or even 6. I did get a couple to bump but only a couple. I will say the '74 Fisk isn't a surprise because when I cracked it out, I did notice it appeared to have a slight amount of surface warpage that looked like water damage (no stain) which the original grader missed. The '76s were the best of a few thousand cards that came from vending. I selected the absolute blazers. Most got 8s. Money down the toilet there. I bet if I resubmited this entire lot from PSA 8 down, at least 25% would bump. However, it's not worth it. I'm better off just buying overgraded 8s and 9s on eBay. image Here they are with a couple of comments on the key cards:

I think I would be happy with those grades, but then I didn't see the cards first hand.

Compare to the 8OC I got the other week and think is overgraded (*)...

Want to trade flips? Yours looks OC rather then MC (I see all the design). image

Bummer - couple of nuggets of goodness, but only enough to keep you in the game. Agree about futility of grading mid-70's stuff at this point. Negative ROI except a handful of low pops.

at the risk of offending the previous poster, i would say that subbing '76 Topps is akin to dipping your foot in dogpoop and then trying to convince everyone your shoes smell like gardenias.

True but when they are vending fresh and you get 9s and 10s, it's worthwhile. Never in my worst nightmares did I expect to get so many 8s. I've graded enough of these to know what to look for.

True, many complain. However, I've grade many thousands of cards over the past decade and over many submissions. So I'm not speaking out of turn.

Yes, I will trade flips!!! I thought the Williams would get a PSA 7 (OC). I could live with that. No way on earth is that card a '5'....the corners are too sharp and the surface is too strong.

Seems like you did well on the 63's, those are tough to get 8's on. Would have been nice to get the 7 on the 61 Cerv, that's a tough card.

I'd do that but the problem is the shipping costs on small orders, to and fro, eat you alive. Especially since the shipping costs continue to skyrocket.

The card has a qualifier. The grade should be the condition of the card without taking the centering into account.

Shouldn't that card be OC? I don't see parts of another card.

Oh, and a certain grader does not grade all the 177 series certs.

Wrong. The card is a 5 period because of centering. It also happens to be miscut which technically knocks it down to a 3 which is the correct grade. chaz

    Chaz

Which MC are you talking about? N8?

Also the card would have to have a different problem than the centering to get the qualifier and the low grade.

Like Scott mentioned earlier regarding a wrinkle.

Ok, back to the N8, the card would not get slabbed and the submitter gets a voucher, no?

Or are you saying because of the centering at best the card should only get a 5?

If so, then why the MC qualifier?

IMO if the centering is the only issue it should have received the highest straight grade it could get with that centering right?

    Steve

I'm beginning to wonder if Chaz understands the concept of what a qualifier actually is......

Nope...no wrinkle...here is a bigger pic...the only way I can make it bigger is to turn the card around....

    image

The only thing I see is some very minor "spotting" to the right of the word "1959"? Not sure if that is the culprit or not...either way, this one is getting a return trip....The qualifier isn't the issue...the actual number is.......

The card received a "5" because of the centering. It received the MC because even though it looks fine on the back, the card does not measure the required 2 1/2 ( for ex. could be 2 7/16 down one end and 2 1/2 down the other end) x 3 1/2 all the way down the sides or top and bottom of the card. chaz

That's what I'm thinking too. (or at least it's possible)

If it measured up properly it simply would have been a straight 5 or a 7 OC.

And because it fit into the holder they did not N8 it.

    Good for you.

I was expecting a 7 (OC) or 7 (MC). The 7 (OC) should have been the proper grade. The card will have a future date with my drimmel. Will keep everyone informed of the rebirth.

I understand what you sare saying. While that might be minutely possible, I don't think so. I am sorta familiar with the issue. I am 99% positive it was the front that was addressed with the qualifier and not the reverse.

Not a question of being "minutely" possible. I have a number of cards that came back that way. chaz

It may be an illusion caused by the holder, but that card doesn't look miscut at all to me. Comparing the edges to the guides inside the holder, it looks like a perfect rectangle to me.

Chaz my man, cmon now. You know PSA 6's, but you don't know PSA 5 MC. If the card was perfectly centered, it's a PSA 5 without the MC. If the card got a 5 because of centering, how do you explain these:

Guys guys guys, it's so simple, perhaps you need a refresher course:

    MC (miscut)
Type of qualifier. A card that has little or no border, or even portions of another card. Cards with a factory miscut, such as a diamond cut, or when another card's image is on the original card will be designated MC.

Now go get me some gauze pads and some ball bearings.

Here is an (MC) card that I subbed, and I even asked for no qualifiers. I think they put the (MC) on it when it's WAY off center. Just my theory.

Even when you specify NQ the card will get one if no grade can properly apply. If it were 70/30 but perfect otherwise, for example, a NQ sub would drop to an 8 instead of a 9 (OC), but a 95/5 doesn't qualify for any number grade as even 1.5 requires at least 90/10.

IOW, is ain't the centering that caused the 5.

the way I explain the PSA 5 MC,
grader 1: Hmmmm Ted Williams, very tough card, quite rare, I will have to be extra tough on this one. PSA 6 OC
grader 2: hey , that is the rarest card in the set let's look at that again after lunch ok.
    After Lunch;
Grader 1: oh I feel sick, I don't think that was even chicken
Grader 2: yea I think your right and I didn't notice any cats or dogs around the neighborhood.
grader 1 : back to williams
grader 2 : yea nice card, but centering 97/3,
grader 1: about like our lunch 3% good 97 % bad
grader 2 : lets call it a 5 MC since it is ten till five
grader 1 : agreed, lets get the flock outta here.
grader 2 : hey maybe they will run it on ebay , my friend jim can buy it and resub and we give it 8 OC.
grader 1 : chuckle chuckle, hey hey not a bad idea. but remember this is a very rare card.
grader 2 : agreed, bad idea when jim buys it we'll send it to SGC, KSA,Gem mint, or just any goofy grading company.
grader 1 : hey you got any coke or oxy left , lets get flocked up
grader 2 : sound good to me.

this is a fantasy scenario or is it the twilight zone???????????????????

Well, the only other way it could get a "5" is that there is a crease somewhere on it. The other cards you list don't make sense to me....chaz

Then I don't know what the hell then...PSA sends me grades sometimes that make absolutely no sense.I think I'm getting a "9", it comes back a "6". I look at it and can't find out why...it's frustrating.. and then I think a card is a "6" and it comes back an "8" so go figure...I guess it all evens itself out in the end....chaz

IMO true EX/MNT cards generally can go either way.

I am not talking about OC cards that were net graded 6's.

A true EX/MNT card back in the day was a card that was born a gem.

It was centered, had the full amount of color, no PD, registration was all there etc.

What it did have was one or two slightly touched corners.

I once had a 6 from company X and submitted to company Y and it became an 8.

    Good for you.

Chaz, from an earlier post of mine:

Guys guys guys, it's so simple, perhaps you need a refresher course:

Now go get me some gauze pads and some ball bearings.

In all seriousity, the definition in bold is right from the PSA web-site. As Bobby has been indicating, the number grade indicates the card attributes minus the miscut. In the case of the Williams card, we are all left to wonder why it is a 5, but it should not be from the miscut. At least that's how I understand it.

When I first saw the grade, I thought that too Toro. I can live with that except I have seen 6's and 7's with the same "toning spots" or whatever it is that sometimes plagues the '59 Fleers.......

Good lord dude - give it up. Once the card gets a MC, do you honestly think PSA continues to ding the card grade-wise for the centering? Reeeeeallllllly?????
