No love for the Palladium Eagle?

Personally, I must have one with the Mercury Dime face.

Separately, H.R. 6166 America Eagle Palladium Bullion Coin Act of 2010 was also signed into law by the President on December 14. The bill had been introduced by Dennis Rehberg of Montana on September 22 and passed in the House on September 29 and Senate on November 30.

Provided that a marketing study determines that there is adequate demand, the United States Mint would be required to mint and issue palladium bullion coins. The American Palladium Eagles would contain one ounce of .9995 fine palladium with a nominal face value of $25.

Designs would be close likenesses of the work of Adolph A. Weinman, specifically the obverse of the Mercury Dime and the reverse of the 1907 American Institute of Architects medal. The US Mint may additionally strike proof or uncirculated versions for collectors. The first Palladium Eagles are required to be minted and issued not more than one year after the submission of the required marketing study.

I'll buy one. The Weiman design is insane. Hardcore WLH reverse eagle.

  • A Palladium Eagle is a great idea but why can't the US Mint come up with any original designs?

Palladium is now reaching heights that platinum was only about 4-5 years ago, so it defeats the purpose of offering a cheaper bullion coin to the public. The mint might eventually end offering platinum after 4 years or sooner. They already ended offering platinum bulllion two years ago. These will be expensive.

I'm still waiting for the palladium version of the high relief double eagle. The reverse of the 1907 medal has a very odd looking eagle on it:

  • At current Pd spot prices, it would make ALOT of sense to issue these in the same 4 sizes as the AGEs. Pd is about twice as expensive as gold was in 1986 for the AGE rollout. Why not make them down to at least the 1/4oz size if not all 4 sizes?

My fear is that they'll mess with the Weiman design to make it "more appealing". It's a meaty, raw design that needs to be left alone.

FWIW, sales of 2010 fractional gold eagles have been horrible this year. We are still working on the first original tube of each that we bought last January, and have decided to cut our 2011 starting order to a half a roll of each.

That is not to say that we did not flop some deals of older date 1/4 ozers to astute customers as they came in.........

    My second. I bought DC's first Pd coin...a 2010 25 Amero 1/10oz.
  • The mercury design spent too long on such a small canvas. I'm excited to buy a larger version. They better not mess with it too much.

I've rather given up on the mint coming up with good new designs anyway.

Oh no.... not again. Another bullion coin to be sold through the approved distributors..... and probably with a limited mintage.
