5'8" and yes carbs are the devil! I started at 20/day then gradually went down to zero/day. I've been eating no more than 100/day since but am going to scale back again this year.
Will be retired in June.Plan to be in Chicago for the National and pick up some PSA 8 or better 59 Topps to get my set to as close to an 8 rating as possible. Plan to sell a majority of my card collection and sports collection except my 59 topps master set currently(or the last time I looked)#16 and my late son's 78 set which is as clean as the day it was printed.I still plan to collect Detroit Tiger cards from all ERAS up to 1984 and NFL HOFers from pre WWll in which there are not that many and from 1948 LEAF/BOWMAN to 1955.Raw or lower Professionaly Graded.
Sounds like a lot of people plan to sell cards in 2011. For the below reasons, who can blame them:
1) Lower prices projected due to higher card populations. 2) Lower prices projected due to a dragging economy. 3) Lower prices projected due to more concerns about cracking-and-resealing flimsy PSA holders. 4) Lower prices projected due to lower prices projected, which prompts sellers to sell sooner. 5) Too many new set registry composites being added with little control, causing registry clutter and making any one set less meaningful. 6) The new generation largely "forgetting" about cards because there are too many dynamic electronic diversions today.
For true "collectors" that don't care about things "ROI" or "investment recovery", the above is terrific news for 2011 and beyond!
Guy's cutting carbs is only going to give you a short term victory.

I haven't posted in awhile. I hope everyone is doing well. Not sure where wienhold got the idea that it sounds like a lot of people want to sell. I went through this post and it seems that most who posted are still collecting with a few that are looking to refocus. Some of your observations of the future of collecting are true, but I am hopeful things will get better.
As far as my 2011 collecting goals. I plan on working on my 1956-1985 top 30 Topps PSA graded baseball cards (not including all-stars, team leaders etc) from each year. I have completed 1959, 1961-1966, 1968-1985. I still need 16 from 1956, 27 from 1957, 14 from 1958, 2 from 1960 (Clemente and Aaron) and 1 from 1967 (Tom Seaver).
I am also working on 1957 to 1979 football. The top 18 from 1957 to 1960, top 24 from 1961 to 1967 and the top 18 from 1968 to 1979. So far, I only need the 1971 Terry Bradshaw to finish from 1969 to 1979. I am nearly complete with 1960, 1964, 1967 and 1968. PSA graded football cards from the 1960's can be hard to find in PSA 6 and 7 at auction prices on ebay. Most are buy it nows that are way overpriced. So, I am remaining patient.
I also collect 70's PSA graded Basketball and Hockey stars. I would like to get the top 12-18 from 1970 to 1979. So far I have about 40 total Hockey and 30 Basketball.
I am also beginning to dabble a little in PCGS graded coins. I have some gold and silver bullion, but have recently become interested in old silver coins.

Why do superheros only hang out in New York or L.A.? Why not Bangor??

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.
looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started
Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.
Very interesting to see what everyone is hoping to collect next year. Some very impressive goals many have.
This year was still a very tough year for me so I was really only able to buy a handful of inexpensive cards for my Steve Garvey Basic Set, and no cards for my Dodgers rookie collection.
Right now I'm at 26.47% with many cards left to purchase.
I think for 2011 I will keep my goals simple. Add cards to my Steve Garvey Basic Set. Maybe get close to 50% and well into the Top 10. Still need to get a nice Steve Garvey autographed item. Add a card or two to my Dodgers Rookie Collection
My son will be starting T-ball Spring 2011, so I'm sure that will keep me busy and hopefully my industry gets busier in 2011.
Continue consolidating my duplicate cards. I want to be down to:
1. My 2 penzonni display cases (55 standard, 15 horizontal, 7 tallboys) 2. 1 penzonni graded cherry wood case (holds about 200 cards) 3. Find a better display method for my longhorn auto/memorabilia cards (100-200) 4. Get a nice cherry wood tallboys holder to match my standard graded case. (25 or so cards) 5. Get down to one 3,200 count box for misc cards. 6. Inventory my graded cards in my new VCP membership
I also want to get all my slabbed cards scanned & insured. My homeowners policy (AllState) will not cover theft, etc.
As far as real card goals (2010 was the conversion from modern to all time rookie greats):
1951 Bowman Mantle 1957 Topps Russell 2004 Fans of the Game Phelps 1991 Impel Armstrong 1958 Alfiabolaget Pele 1982 Topps Lawrence Taylor (9 or better) 1983 Topps Gwynn (9 or better) 1933 Goudey Thorpe
Continue to work on my unique Longhorn collection.
Stop buying crap I don't need. Focus on my Bossy master set (need less than 15 cards). Start a Mario Lemieux basic set.
Patrick congrats on loosing all that weight and a bigger congrats for keeping it off. I have lost 45 pounds in the last 8 months just by doing a full body workout 3 times a week and measuring my portions of food.
<< <i>I just searched for and found the "2010 Goals" thread. In it I wrote:
"I'm not sure if I can, but I'd like to complete my 1962 Topps Basic Set Registry.
Wow. It's been a loooong time in the making. I started building it in 2004 with a MN Twins card (#584) in PSA 7. I overpaid for it but I just wanted to upgrade that card in my raw set. Little did I know what it would lead to as I discovered PSA and the Set Registry!"
I'm down to ONE card I need -- #400 Elston Howard in PSA 7 or 8 -- so I'm close to reaching this year's goal! I had one Elston lined up as I made an offer on a BIN PSA8 two or three weeks ago, but the seller lowered the price before I could read his message and someone else grabbed it. Drats! There's still a slight chance I'll finish the set this calendar year, but if not, next year for sure.
The rest of the time I'm going to enjoy the set. As Steve E. (seinbigd) started doing with his '62T set, I want to scan and upload every card, including the green tint variations for everyone to see. I'll be posting the results here when I've finished that.
Otherwise, I need to sell off the duplicates and other graded cards I've picked up over the years and build the savings account back up. My wife and I need to downsize our "collection of collections". My brother and his family in MN want to visit us this summer, so we have some incentive to clean this place up. Making a room available to display and enjoy my stuff is in the plans, too.
Best of luck on all the well-thought out goals here! >>
YES!! I was able to meet my biggest goal for the year of getting my '62T set scanned and uploaded.
Im right there with you Steve. Im going to get rid of EVERYTHING except for my Roop box full of 1950s Baseball. I would love to have my collection narrowed to just one box. >>
Holy cow....I accomplished what I set out to do for 2010! Woohoo!

Wow, congratulations! How much other stuff did you have to unload to reach your goal??
Continue consolidating my duplicate cards. I want to be down to:
1. My 2 penzonni display cases (55 standard, 15 horizontal, 7 tallboys) DONE! Very proud of these guys.
2. 1 penzonni graded cherry wood case (holds about 200 cards) DONE! I actually only have 2 of the 4 columns filled now after I sold my duplicates.
3. Find a better display method for my longhorn auto/memorabilia cards (100-200) Working with my brother to create a card holding "crown molding" in my sports room. Not completed.
4. Get a nice cherry wood tallboys holder to match my standard graded case. (25 or so cards) Decided to not get this as I only have the 7 in my wall display case and 4 in my desk case. I just put them sideways in the desk case.
5. Get down to one 3,200 count box for misc cards. DONE and I am very happy about this.
6. Inventory my graded cards in my new VCP membership Done but I have about 5 from my last sub that this just reminded me to add!
I also want to get all my slabbed cards scanned & insured. My homeowners policy (AllState) will not cover theft, etc. NOT done. Massive failure.
As far as real card goals (2010 was the conversion from modern to all time rookie greats):
Blew my expectations away on this. I added many more than just these!
1951 Bowman Mantle -- Done in a PSA 2.5 1957 Topps Russell -- Done in BVG 3 2004 Fans of the Game Phelps -- Not done. 1991 Impel Armstrong -- Done in BGS 9.5 1958 Alfiabolaget Pele -- replaced with 1958 Rekord Journal BVG 6 1982 Topps Lawrence Taylor (9 or better) - Done in BGS 9 1983 Topps Gwynn (9 or better) -- Done in PSA 9 1933 Goudey Thorpe -- Done in SGC 30
Continue to work on my unique Longhorn collection. -- Always adding to this!
How about build a time machine back to the 80's or 90's? Scary how fast those decades went by.
-Does anyone in the 27-35 age range bracket feel like they sort of "missed" the middle 90's or late 90's? When I look through an SMR, or any price guide and look at say football cards from the mid or late 90's, it seems like I didn't collect any of them.
I wonder if the generation that grew up on cards in the 80's will have second thoughts about the "junk", or overproduction, parallel cards, inserts that turned them off at the time. There was a disdain for some cards or sets after 91 or 93. Maybe they'll come back and be favorites?
-I'll probably get some boxes this year that I haven't before...
91 Stadium Club football. 93 or 94 SP baseball. 96/97 Topps finest basketball.
And maybe some non sport, like wrestling and garbage pail kids.
interesting to see this thread rise up shortly after another well-intended thread which attempted to examine our ability to focus on specific goals.
i've learned a lot this year and i now know that setting goals is one thing, but the continued pursuit of improvement means never having to complete them.
definitely been a year for the better as far as collecting. i hope 2012 is just as good.
i will create newspeak for the coming year - instead of goals i will have projects, instead of focus i will have productive diversions, and instead of failures i will have extra spending money.
<< <i>Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in.
I went dormant on collecting for a while (bought some big-ticket non-collectibles purchases). I'm still buying some though.
I think my ongoing goal right now is to sell off extras I don't need - especially graded ones.
Nick >>
I pretty much ignored that goal, and went right back into collecting everything and anything. I actually created a detailed list for myself of specific goals, was keeping it regularly updated, and accidentally deleted it late in the year. I didn't accomplish most of those goals, although I did quite well on acquiring autographs and GU cards of HOFers I didn't previously have (my goal was 5 new ones, and I got at least twice as many new players).
Two more 1977 Topps PSA 10 All-Star cards. I stand at 13 out of 18 right now. I think Carew and Concepcion will happen this year. Happy New Year everyone!
I will finish my 1963 Topps Baseball in PSA 7 or so !! Currently 29th (or 51st in all time) and just sent in 57 more on the 30th! That will leave me with around 100 to get graded in 2012. I want to finish before Dec 21st! I will ask for help when these 57 get popped. I love the Universe!

Collecting goals for the year.
Drats!
Anybody else meet or beat their goals??
<< <i>
Im right there with you Steve. >>

1. My 2 penzonni display cases (55 standard, 15 horizontal, 7 tallboys)
DONE! Very proud of these guys.
2. 1 penzonni graded cherry wood case (holds about 200 cards)
DONE! I actually only have 2 of the 4 columns filled now after I sold my duplicates.
3. Find a better display method for my longhorn auto/memorabilia cards (100-200)
Working with my brother to create a card holding "crown molding" in my sports room. Not completed.
4. Get a nice cherry wood tallboys holder to match my standard graded case. (25 or so cards)
Decided to not get this as I only have the 7 in my wall display case and 4 in my desk case. I just put them sideways in the desk case.
5. Get down to one 3,200 count box for misc cards.
DONE and I am very happy about this.
6. Inventory my graded cards in my new VCP membership
Done but I have about 5 from my last sub that this just reminded me to add!
1951 Bowman Mantle -- Done in a PSA 2.5
1957 Topps Russell -- Done in BVG 3
2004 Fans of the Game Phelps -- Not done.
1991 Impel Armstrong -- Done in BGS 9.5
1958 Alfiabolaget Pele -- replaced with 1958 Rekord Journal BVG 6
1982 Topps Lawrence Taylor (9 or better) - Done in BGS 9
1983 Topps Gwynn (9 or better) -- Done in PSA 9
1933 Goudey Thorpe -- Done in SGC 30
Continue to work on my unique Longhorn collection. -- Always adding to this!
Good luck to all that have great plans! Enjoyed reading the posts.
Picked up the few upgrades part but no #7 still...
i've learned a lot this year and i now know that setting goals is one thing, but the continued pursuit of improvement means never having to complete them.
definitely been a year for the better as far as collecting. i hope 2012 is just as good.
i will create newspeak for the coming year - instead of goals i will have projects, instead of focus i will have productive diversions, and instead of failures i will have extra spending money.
Batted .500 on set completion, completed two of the four.
Success on consolidating the collection more. Check.
Unopened - getting there, that'll be a priority next year.
52 Mantle made the year. And the next 5 or so.

Ron Burgundy?
OK, who put the question mark on that nomination?! Just do it!
<< <i>Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in.
I went dormant on collecting for a while (bought some big-ticket non-collectibles purchases). I'm still buying some though.
I think my ongoing goal right now is to sell off extras I don't need - especially graded ones.
