It helps to understand that these bars were made in 1980, when silver peaked at $50/oz. That would make the melt value of this bar around $8 in 1980 dollars. Adjusted for inflation, that would represent about $25 in 2010 dollars. Now it becomes clear why they were produced.

Oh, good old days when I was buying silver...I had a lot to show on fridays! My newps: 1 gold ducat in perfect condition and one well worn 1945 quarter "paid" 25¢!
