That's rather harsh.

Dan is a "tastemaker" in that what he produces has a following, and creates its own market. Someday QDB will write a book about him..of course, Dave will be 117 years old then.

I disagree. I think his original designs are fun but a bit lacking in artistic inspiration. A bit two dimensional. More like simple line drawings. I think Mr. Carr is more of a technician. It's no surprise his Peace Dollar looks so darn good.

That's the cool thing about art. To each is own. As a designer I aslo have my critics and fans. I try to appease neither. I find Daniel's themes and execution stimulating. I will say one thing, I wish in my field there were forums like this. MJ

You design some coins.
let us know how you make out with all that.
One of my favorites. (I own 8% of the mintage)
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.

Jealous much!!!
Daniel is a forum icon.....his talents are amazing.
Opposing opinions are part of this forum, but aren't you being a bit harsh as Perryhall said!!!
<< <i>It seems like he purchased quite a bit. Since he himself had never heard of these pieces, I would imagine that he realizes he may make good gains, but might also now be participating in what might be a very limited market. >>
Someday, folks WILL seek this stuff out as Daniel is not just another fellow with a coining press.
After all, he has a history as a designer with the US Mint and does create some nice coins, tokens, and what nots. He's already written into Numismatic History and regardless of what occurs in the future, that history will always be there.
The name is LEE!

I own one of these trade dollars as well, a very cool design.
I also own an Amero 20 dollar coin and what I really like about the peice is it made the right wing nuts go crazy and delusional
<< <i>D Carr should send all forum members a free Amero. >>
Cool! Free Ameros for everyone!
Free beer tomorrow.
NEXT, Id like to see a big slug. A nice huge octagonal gold slug. With a mintage of like 12, sold a bit over spot...that would be a sure winner.
No, and to tell the truth tonite was the first time that I had seen any of the coins pictured in my thread in person, including the 64 D, I don't have one yet!

i disagree. i happen to think a lot of his work is WAY better than most of what the mint has been putting out in the last 60 years.
my only regret is i didn`t buy his hard times tokens but i will pick them up in the aftermarket.
<< <i>It is still very hard for me to believe that people spend money on this stuff...holey crap, an entire shopping spree. Ugh! >>
You wouldn't be making that comment if you only knew how strong the aftermarket is for his fantasy pieces. They spend money on classic stuff don't they?
<< <i>He has a certain artistic style, which I assume is part talent driven and part software driven....but I think he cant go wrong sticking with what works for him.

I think the die began to deteriorate.

Seriously? That's one ugly coin IMO. To each his own.

That was one of the most mean spirited comments I've ever read on these boards. MJ

Some people think it is totally strange to ever spend more than face value for a coin, any coin - no matter what it is.
Those people are wrong, of course
Its gotta be one of the coolest hobbies ever. But then , Daniel is a PROFESSIONAL.
Critics of this art should ask - could you do better?
Did you know he's the designer of the NEW YORK (and other) state quarters?
<< <i>This is gorgeous design! Why were there only 45 of minted?
Well, the rims didn't strike very well at all (relief was too high), the die chipped along the rim in a couple places, and I didn't like the Curry portrait (among other things). I did this as a speculative proposal for the Carson City Coin Collectors of America ("C4OA") coin club. I was really in a rush to get it made for the proposal. The project never went forward and I never spent the time necessary to refine the portrait and other aspects of it. But I think it does look a little better when "circulated" with the right color
PS:
Abe Curry founded the City of Carson City, then went on to become director of the Carson City Mint. The first coin struck at the mint was the 1970-CC Seated Liberty dollar. For the map I used real Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data from the US Geological Survey (USGS). The map shows the location of Nevada's Capitol, the state border across Lake Tahoe, and at the upper right is the location of Virginia City and the Comstock Lode (where pick & shovel cross).
This Carson City design is very interesting, and tonight at least, hot!
Do you think theres opportunities for restrikes with the bad dies?
(Though I liked the Tessla designs and others more).

The dies went (literally) into the "rust bucket" long ago. I could engrave totally new dies. But 2008 is long past, so no.
Did somebody say beer?
I have a style that is generally "geometric" because I like it that way, but not all the designs are so. Here are a few of my own favorites:
<< <i>I remember back in 2007 when I first came out with the Amero coins and the various death threats I received (from wacko Hal Turner listeners, I think). And now there is speculation by some of a future "penitentiary" residence. >>
Quite an accurate comparison. Violence in an attempt to control others exists on an escalating scale from put downs to murder. And it stems from the perpetrator's own personal sense of inadequacy. Scratch a sadist and you find a masochist. Every bully is a coward in disguise.
